I booked a last minute girl's weekend at the Howard Johnson last weekend and felt the experience was just average. Upon arriving, we were met by the lovely concierge Shelia, she spoke english and directed us to request her if we needed anything at all. Check-in was relatively fuss free and the deluxe twin room we had booked was modern, clean and comfortable.

Unfortunately, the bar fridge wasn't working - it was hot rather than cold, so we decided to head to the lounge bar for some live music and cocktails (as recommended by Sheila). Having lived in Chengdu for a few years, my friend and I should have known better than to order cocktails, but we did anyway hoping our low expectations would buffer the end result. How wrong we were. I ordered the capriosca which turned out to be a bright green, mouth wash flavoured liquid. My friend's cocktail looked less offensive but had a very off-putting smell. I'm not sure if the barman has tasted his own cocktails, but they were terrible. Determined not to let this ruin the start of our weekend, we ordered some cava which turned out to be lovely. Later that evening, we tried to order another bottle of cava but were informed that the entire hotel only stocked 2 bottles of sparkling wine which had been sold out. After our foot massage treatment and dinner, we were informed that we couldn't charge any of these expenses to our room as it had exceeded the deposit we had paid upon check-in. I had to go to the front desk and argue my case before they allowed us to charge these and any further expenses to the room. I felt this was very unprofessional.

Overall, the hotel facilities are great (hot spring, foot massage treatments, room etc), but service (apart from Sheila) was generally poor. I would also avoid the breakfast buffet and order a la carte. We had a reasonably good a la carte dinner, but breakfast was highly disappointing. Once the Six Senses opens down the road in 2014, I think Howard Johnson will lose its top-end clientele.

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our friends wedding party.

Having stayed closer to the city the previous night, when walking into the hotel we were immediately impressed.

We were taken to our room by the foreign liaison manager Olaf, had a really friendly chat with him and he turned out to be the best thing about the hotel. Nothing was too much effort, searching for adapters, lost headphones, food at midnight, mini busses for 17 people at short notice, to name just a few things he did for us and the wedding party. A true star and a prime example of 5 star service.

The hotel itself is of a very high standard. The services on offer are outstanding, the spa and spring area are beautiful and very relaxing.

The only things that let down the hotel are the food which was just ok and the amount of multilingual staff. Without Olaf we would've been stuck on many occasions.

If we were to visit our friend in that part of china again, we would definitely stay here.

Howard Johnson is currently the only decent choice in qingcheng mountain / Dujiangyan area. Facility is well done - room sizes large and breakfast is ok. Taxis will
Cost you though if you don't have your own transport. Didn't try out other F&B options.
