“Perfect Retreat”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

Wonderful retreat in a lovely spot. So quiet and peaceful and lovely to see the wildlife. Bottle of wine and fruit a lovely gesture and we had a wonderful relaxing time . We could not have had nicer owners. Nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel very welcome. Water was put out for our dog. Lovely views of the river and such a lovely walk along the river bank. The property was spotless and faultless. Everything there that you could possibly need. Wonderful to have the log fire . Made it so cosy. Huge bathroom and lovely shower. The place is a credit to the owners and we loved it.

Room Tip: The room is lovely and light and the sun comes into the room all day. Lovely high ceiling makes the...

We loved being at The Garden Annex - it was our first visit and we certainly hope to return. The accommodation is at the end of a private lane with wonderful views over the garden and river. We saw a green woodpecker on the lawn and a kingfisher flew by as we sat by the river. We appreciated the space - high ceilings, tall windows, and a bathroom to get lost in! Ron welcomed us when we arrived, and Sue had kindly left us various surprise treats which made our stay even more memorable. We enjoyed the open log fire on two evenings and above all the peace and quiet. The kitchenette is well equipped with a full oven and hob, as well as a microwave, so we decided to eat in each evening. We did treat ourselves to a cooked breakfast at The Oak House in Maldon on our way back, which we would also recommend. The accommodation is well placed for visiting the Blackwater Estuary for walking and birdwatching. We also visited two churches: St. Mary's a 14th century church at Mundon, and St. Peter's, a 7th century church just beyond Bradwell. Colchester and Chelmsford are also within easy reach. We can't wait to return.

I stayed at Beeleigh Falls Garden Annex in March 2012. It has wonderful, generous accommodation for a couple, though I was travelling alone on a research trip. One needs a car if one stays there. Beeleigh Falls is a lovely yellow brick Victorian home, with 20 foot ceilings and huge windows. The Garden Annex is in a later Victorian extension off the back of the house, with the same enormous windows. It is a very peaceful and quiet place, in the Blackwater River Valley, right by the river’s edge. Despite that, it is only five minutes by car from the High Street in Maldon, so supplies for the refrigerator are no problem at all. It is also just a few miles from Chelmsford, where I was doing most of my research. It is in an area of beautiful farmland, in rolling hills. It is very rural.

Sue and Ron, the owners of Beeleigh Falls, are lovely and accommodating people. A simple example: I was on a long trip and wished to do some laundry, and the Garden Annex has a washer thankfully. However, I had no laundry soap. Sue and Ron were delighted to let me have a few scoops from their own supply, so I did not have to buy a bigger supply than I could use while staying with them. I was greeted with a welcoming bottle of wine, and fresh flowers from their garden. They do everything they can to make one’s visit a success.

The accommodation is perfect for a couple, with a king sized bed, a dining table which seats six comfortably, all the modern TV and DVD equipment one could want, and a very modern shower which is big enough for two! I cannot imagine that a couple would feel crowded at all, as the room dimensions are so generous. The quality of the furnishings and the taste of its arrangements is first rate. I share Sue’s preference for colours: mild neutral walls and soft furnishings, bright white door and window frames, and cheerful reds in accents and draperies. It is charmingly and beautifully arranged.

One enters the property over a small bridge, past an historic mill. The lane curves past the house beside the river, and there are several outbuildings. One hears the gentle falling water sounds of Beeleigh Falls close by, and the busy voices of the local birds. It is quiet and peaceful. Several mornings while having my coffee, looking out through those enormous windows, I watched peasants strolling through the garden.

I cannot rate the quality and pleasant nature of the accommodation more highly than to say that not only do I hope to return for a longer visit, but that I felt as warm, and comfortable, and generally spoiled as I do in my own home, and oh, I do like that.

Room Tip: If you are a couple, stay here. You will love it.

Well, when we were looking for somewhere to stay this property didn't meet many of our criteria (not in dorset/not near a train station/definitely not part of the owners property!) But when we saw it, it just ticked all of our boxes!

Sue and Ron made us feel very welcome and even left fresh milk in the fridge so we could have a cuppa on arrival.
We brought all our own foodstuffs, but if we had forgotten anything you could almost guarantee it would be in one of the cupboards.

The bathroom big enough to fit a bed in and the actual bed itself was very comfortable.

Plenty of lovely walks around and a great base. We even managed to have a bottle of wine (again, kindly left for us) in the sunny garden one evening.

All in all a fantastic break, could have easily stayed a few more days!
Thank you

We spent a couple of very relaxing days in the Annexe... Ron and Sue are absolutely lovely and their house is warm and cosy! We were greeted with milk in the fridge and a basket of fruits, the cosiest bed ever, wood by the fireplace, adorable cats, two bikes to ride along the canal... and Sue and Ron were helpful anytime we needed something!

I would def recommend this cottage for a quick getaway from London... Thinking of going back already!

This is our third time at Beeleigh Falls and surely we will return.
Hospitality is superb; personal with great attention to detail.
The proprietors Sue and Ron are so very kind. We arrived to find all the baby equipment we could wish for a neonate, a mini indoor easter egg hunt for our 8 year old, and a delicious homebaked apple crummble ( not to mention the fine food and drinks in the fridge)
The annexe was so very warm and the recent addition of a DVD player added even more to its charm. We enjoyed little strolls along the canals and a roaring fireplace on Easter Sunday. We even had the added priviledge of meeting more family members and friends. Sue had even printed the entire "what's on" in Maldon which gave us loads of options for all ages. No request is too small
There is so much to do in the area if you enjoy tranquility, the countryside, walks and genuine hospitality. The English countryside at its finest!
THANK YOU for yet another memorable stay. A Huge hug to Rowena, Roman and Olly!!

I would definitely recommend a stay at the Annexe at Beeleigh Falls. It's a brilliant location - hidden away but only a short walk along the canal into all the amenities you need for your stay in Maldon. It's in an idyllic setting with great walks just on your doorstep.

As for the accommodation, Sue couldn't have been more attentive and helpful. After a long drive, arriving to a fire on the go and a bottle of wine ready for us ensured the perfect start to a great weekend. Everything was spotlessly clean and the flat had everything you needed for your stay. I have already started recommending the place to friends and family and hope to revisit.
