5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 December 2013

Had a wonderful stay at the Hythe in Maldon. We heard about it through Alistair Sawday, and it really is quite luxurious.

The breakfasts are immense, and absolutely delicious, although you won't need to eat for the rest of the day! The room we stayed in overlooked the estuary and it was lovely and cosy. The bathroom was heavenly, and lots of nice smelly candles and bath foam to relax with.

Its set in a really superb location, super close to all the nice bits of Maldon, but because its on the estuary its a little quieter than in town.

Cannot recommend this place enough.

We stayed earlier this month and found 32 The Hythe to be every bit as good as the previous reviews. You couldn't wish for more hospitable hosts and a more delightful home and, yes, those breakfasts are wonderful. We stayed in the black and white room with its very comfortable bed and were provided with so many lovely extras and treats that I felt like a child in a sweet shop! They probably have the best view over the estuary in Maldon too - waking up to a perfect sunrise added to a great stay.

This is the second time we have visited Kim and Gerry at their beautiful home. We book both of their rooms as we are usually coming down to a family party so both myself,my wife and my brother and wife took advantage of this superb B&B. On this occasion it was for a ruby wedding on one of the Thames sailing barges so it couldn't have been more convenient as we embarked from across the road. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the breakfast is splendid, we even managed to sit out on the sun deck to eat it. Will definitely stay again when we are down in Essex.

This was our second stay with Kim and Gerry and is the best B&B we have ever stayed in. Excellent range of cafetiere coffee and teas with fresh milk and and cookies plus lots of other unexpected treats. Kim and Gerry make you feel really welcome, and the breakfast is out of this world. The location is quite special overlooking the quay and the river Blackwater, and it is really quiet for a good nights sleep.

Only two rooms but both are fab. The tea tray with little cakes, sweets. Bathroom goodies. Comfortable bed and the breakfast was amazing. Fit for a King and Queen, of course. Highly recommend this B&B.

Just two rooms in this bed and breakfast with probably the best location in Maldon. On the quiet end of The Hythe - the quayside where you will find the beautiful old, but working, Thames sailing barges tied up between trips - and facing directly out onto the quay itself. The Black and White room is a good size double, window facing out across the quay (see photo) with a generous sized en-suite with both bath and shower. The Gold room, a slightly larger double aspect double bedded room, again with views across the quayside, which comes with a private bathroom access to which is across the small first floor landing. Very quiet at night both inside and outside gives opportunity for a good night sleep with the sun streaming through the windows in the morning (if you're lucky with the weather - we were).

Owners Kim and Gerry have this business down to a fine art. Everything that you could possibly want is in your room - from generous tea and coffee making facilities (with a choice of ordinary, speciality and herbal teas, instant or fresh cafetiere coffee, bottled water, there was even a small bottle of wine. A generous selection of biscuits and bowls of sweets, together with toiletries by the gallon. The only difficulty was in deciding what was there for guest's use - we were told by Kim to just help ourselves! Wall mounted large flat screen TV (you might want to turn this off at the mains when you turn, in as the standby light is very bright at 3am!). This is hospitality at its' best - and we didn't take (too much) advantage of it!

Others have described the breakfast. In a word, wow! Being a fine hot morning Kim had laid up in the garden. A real delight. Cereals and a selection of fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries - and more exotic varieties of kiwi and cheese fruit amongst others. A bowl of fresh Greek yogurt, honey, nuts and a fruit coulis. Then came the fresh - and superbly - cooked mains - a choice of a full English (with local bacon and sausages) , Kippers, Smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs, boiled eggs (served under cosies with soldiers) - I could go on. Fresh coffee, tea and juice in unlimited quantities accompanied, and the whole feast was rounded off with wholemeal toast and or croissants and local preserves. Even the ketchups were premium Tiptree fayre, not your usual supermarket bottles. If you are trying for a diet, then put it to one side for the duration......

Your room also comes with a generous car parking space in front of the house, accessed directly from The Hythe. On a busy weekend this is worth its' weight in gold. There are also two pubs on The Hythe for a pleasant evening drink or meal - the Jolly Sailor and the Queens Head. Of the two, we preferred the Queens Head and the meals - mostly priced at a flat £10 - were good. Very popular at weekends, but 32 The Hythe - whilst only a couple of minutes walk from either, is sufficiently far to be out of earshot and we had no problems with noise or rowdiness. Of course, if you are fortunate enough to be going out on a barge trip, you are within 50 yards of your boarding point, and if not then there are pleasure boat trips in season from the pier in Promenade Park, again less than 5 minutes walk.

A couple of information notes - no smoking and no kids under 14. Access to the house is via a gentle set of steps up and both rooms are on the first floor. The side of the bath/shower in the Black and White room is on the high side, and there are no grab rails for the infirm (I can't comment on the other room).

32 The Hythe is what a B&B should be. No wonder it consistently earns 5 stars in reviews. It isn't cheap (£90 a room when we were there) but is exceedingly good value as everything is there and you are well cared for by friendly hosts (when Gerry isn't out on his boat that is!). Make sure that you book well in advance though, as they have only the two rooms and the secret's out!

Room Tip: There are only the two rooms. For privacy go for the slightly smaller Black and White room as it has...
