Description: Step aboard Sailing Barge Hydrogen on Maldon's Hythe Quay and enjoy a tearoom experience whilst supporting Cooks Barge Yard and this historic vessel. Hydrogen was built in 1906 as a cargo carrier and joined a fleet that once numbered over 2,000 strong. Today she earns her keep as a National Historic Ship, offering sailing cruises from Maldon and Ipswich. Over the winter months, she will be open as an unusual tearoom, serving lovely homemade food supplied by Maldon businesses. Whilst on board you can learn more about the Hydrogen and also Cooks Barge Yard on the Quay, established in 1894 and still used for barge repairs today. Profits from the tearoom will go back to helping maintain the Hydrogen and keeping her afloat and in good condition for the future.

Had a great experience here with friends. Friendly staff and an exciting place to have a cup of tea with a difference. Would love to visit again.

Thank John W

We visited on a sunny Saturday lunchtime and made the most of the unseasonably warm weather by sitting "up top"
The menu, whilst limited uses locally sourced produce and offers gluten free cakes. We all ordered something different and the food was fresh and tasty. Service was efficient and friendly and it was the perfect place to soak up the sun and watch the world go by.
Not sure you'd want to tackle the stairs down into the lower deck with small children, but a great place to visit.

We only had time for a quick cuppa and piece of cake on the barge, but this was very pleasant. A small teapot each and a huge slice of coffee and walnut between 2. It is cosy but spacious - perhaps only a Thames barge can give you that feeling.

Having taken afternoon tea on The Hydrogen barge previously, I knew The Thistle barge would not disappoint on the cake front. The barge is slightly smaller and has the counter at the front of the cafe, rather than the back.

With a good selection of tea, coffee, soft drinks, cakes and hot food on offer, you would be hard pushed not to find something to suit all tastes. Yvette and I both opted for the Victoria Sponge that was light, very tasty and amply sized.

By supporting your local barge tearooms, all money raised goes towards the upkeep and renovation of the boats. So get yourselves down to the Quay in Promenade Park. You will not disappointed.

6 of us went down to the Quay at Maldon on Saturday for some lunch and a catch up. We couldnt reserve a table at The Barge Tea Rooms but took a chance, We waited for approx 15 mins, Well worth the wait. Down in the depths of the boat we had a lovely freshly made Quiche and sandwiches. Well worth a visit.
