“A perfect retreat”
Reviewed 1 October 2018 for a stay in July 2018

We stayed longer than most guests: two and a half months to be exact, and the cottage became a second home. We live in London, but both had reasons to be working in this area of Kent for some time and made Derbies Cottage a place close to work but also a summer retreat. It couldn't have been better. The well-appointed and comfortable bedroom affords dramatic views of the sunrise to anyone who likes a cup of tea or coffee with a book or newspaper in bed. There is a superb shower in the ensuite and an additional cloakroom downstairs. The kitchen is well stocked with virtually anything you would need to cook at home. There is a full-size washer/dryer, a four-burner hob, full-size oven, and full fridge/freezer. These were essentials for our longer stay. The gardens at Derbies are stunning, any time of year. You are also surrounded by orchards and within easy walking distance of East Malling station (to Maidstone/London Victoria) and a great pub in the beautiful, historic village. The footpath to it is along a spring-fed stream that has powered mills since Saxon times, but most famously the Victorian paper, lumber, cloth and fullers' mills. The industry has vanished but beautiful history remains. A bit farther but still within 25 minutes' walk (5 minutes' drive) is West Malling with its fantastic independent restaurants and shops, all in medieval buildings. You will not find chains here, but three or four great pubs, as many fine restaurants, and more history than you can take in. If you are down from London or coming in from further afield, check out St Benedict's Centre in Malling Abbey for quiet days in a private room with a desk and unlimited WiFi. I can hardly describe the setting with 950 year old abbey tower and a stream running through the grounds to the famous cascade sketched by J. M. W. Turner. You room will typically be in a guest house built in the 1300s. We took advantage of the time to visit Dungeness, Tunbridge Wells, Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Lullingstone Roman Villa and the fascinating church on the grounds of the stately home there (the church is open and paid tours of the house and gardens are available), Shoreham, Kemsing, and further afield to Ramsgate, Broadstairs and the White Cliffs where the National Trust has recently re-opened fascinating WWII tunnels and the Victorian lighthouse which was the first in the world to use electrical light. Rochester with its fascinating cathedral was another stop. You can reach Whitstable, Faversham, Deal, and the historic fun fairs at Dymchurch and Margate, not to mention the Downs and Canterbury. With your hosts at Derbies, Christine and Trevor, you will want for nothing. I cannot add one detail that could have made our stay better. It was simply perfect.

“Absolutely delightful little gem of a cottage.”

If you wish to explore Kent which has an extensive choice of attractions to visit you couldn't do much better than to choose the lovely Derbies cottage as your base if you prefer to self cater. It is charming, elegant and tastefully decorated by the owners Christine & Trevor who are excellent and very welcoming hosts. The thoughtful little extra touches they provided (cream tea on arrival, bottle of wine and fresh raspberries from their garden') were truly appreciated. We are already looking forward to planning our next visit!

“Perfect Cottage for 2 People”
Reviewed 7 June 2018 for a stay in May 2018

Stayed at Derbies Cottage for 7 days at the beginning of June and the experience was wonderful. The cottage is set in a beautiful location within the owners grounds and gardens and is fully equipped for a relaxing and comfortable stay for 2 people. The large picture window in the bedroom allows great natural daylight and gives a wonderful view of the extensive garden. Christine and Trevor are the most welcoming of hosts and a bottle of wine and a cream tea were waiting in the fridge for us on arrival, thank you for being so thoughtful. The location of the cottage is perfect for walks in the surrounding countryside and visiting the many National Trust properties in the area. West Malling railway station is only a few minutes drive away and provides a good service to London if you want a day in the Capital. If you are a couple looking for a relaxing and rural location for a break then I would highly recommend Derbies Cottage, Christine and Trevor will make you most welcome.

“Beautiful cottage in a lovely location”

Derbies Cottage is just perfect for a really relaxing break. The cottage itself is lovely and it is well equipped to a high standard, very comfortable and situated down a leafy lane with fabulous views across open countryside. The owners, Trevor and Christine, go out of their way to be as helpful as possible but are not intrusive in any way. There is plenty to see and do, and if like us you are National Trust members, there are many places nearby that are well worth seeing within a 50 mile radius of East Malling. We can’t recommend Derbies enough which is just perfect for a couple and we had a wonderful holiday here.

“Great little private cottage”
Reviewed 2 August 2017 for a stay in July 2017

Stayed here for a few days in July and found it to be very peaceful. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could need. The view from the bedroom is amazing at night looking up at the sky. The garden is vast and we were welcome to use it. A great base to visit Kent.

“Wonderful 'home away from home'”

Derbies Cottage is a lovely self-contained cottage, with off-road parking, in a beautiful rural part of Kent. The hosts are very friendly and helpful, really accommodating.
It is exceptionally well-provisioned, including a welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk etc - even a bottle of wine in the fridge! It also has full cooking facilities, if required.
The bedroom, which us upstairs, has plenty of natural light and is very comfortable. The bathroom contains a walk-in shower, which I love, and again is very well-provisioned, as well as exceptionally clean.
The roads to get to it are quite narrow, however that's quite common and drivers are generally courteous. Don't miss the local 'Hilltop' tea-rooms!
