“Island Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

Mathiveri Inn is a great location for a low-key, relaxed beach vacation. The staff at the Mathiveri Inn were very accommodating and helped to plan and arrange events tailored to my vacation. While the hotel offers a number of packages (including fishing, snorkeling, uninhabited island trips, etc.), when there was something that they did not offer directly, they worked with other partners to make sure it happened. My room was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The attached restaurant has a variety of meals that will suit most tastes. Very good. The value for the room was excellent - room and half board for very reasonable costs. Even budget travelers can spend plenty of time here - which you will want to do. Just a note, be sure to bring cash (USD or MDR), as credit card facilities on the island can be down.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have windows. While many will spend the majority of time at the beach/ in the water...

Maldives with not only wonderful beaches and snorkling etc but also insight into cultur and living (not like in that artifical resorts). Service was extremly helpfull - specially to arrange the transfer (Male) and excursions to affordable prizes. Only few tourists on the island. In a some minutes walk (- ok, partially through the water - but no problem) we had the uninhabitated neighbour island for your own (here are Bikinis allowed!). We stayed 11 great days.

Absolutely perfect - Ismael and his team were very helpful, friendly; beautiful white beaches and beautiful sea with underwater life - great for snorkeling with mantas; beautiful private island; the island is almost without any tourist, just the local people; really great for relax; great value for this money. We have been in Maldives for 3 weeks, also in the 4stars resort, but this stay in Mathiveri Inn was the best at all

Long story short. The ferry we should take to Mathiveri Inn didnt pick us up, but luckely for us, Alena was in Male that day and after a meeting with her, she arranged that we could come with local fishing boat to Thoddoo island and stay there for one night. Then move further the day after to Rasdhoo Inn, where we were picked up at the harbor from the owners. We should stay there for 4-5 hours before we could proceed with the ferry to Mathiveri.

We had booked 14 days on Mathiveri Inn, but since we were some day behind due to the ferry fail and could not edit our booking because it was locked, Alena changed it for free and only invoiced for the days we stayed on Mathiveri Inn eventhough she could invoice the complete booking. She put alot of effort in making sure we got to the island in good condition and just want us to have a succefully holiday on Maldives and espcially Mathiveri Inn - and we did. Thanks alot for that!

Our stay at Mathiveri Inn was not just brilliant, it was perfect! The first night we arrived, Ishmael (the owner) showed us around in the island and showed us the "raw" Mathiveri and how people lived and went to school there. It was already an unbeatable experience we haden't imagined.
We were out snorkelling at this beautiful reef with mantas, dolpins, just us, another guest at Mathiveri Inn, Ishmael and the boatman. This was again a truly unique experince that cant be described, but must be experinced with your own eyes.

There are so many good things to say about Mathiveri Inn, and we would from the bottom of our hearts recommend this place to anyone who is thinking about going to Maldives. The staff is very friendly and are really warm people. Not all are that good at english but they are really trying their best. The prices of the rooms are cheap, the price on food and beverages are very good when you assume you are in Maldives, the rooms are good and clean with air-condition. The prices on tours are cheap compared to other places in Maldives.

The island it self is pure paradise in the middle of the indian ocean and if your are up for super relaxing vacation in good athmosphere, then this is the place to go. If we ever come back to Maldives, there is no doubt in our mind where we are going!

I have travelled to many places around the world but none can compare with the experience I had at Mathiveri Inn and island. The service was amazing. There was a special, personal touch added to everything. The kindness, humbleness and simplicity bowled me over. Ismail is one of the finest people I have ever met and I am so grateful for all that he had done for us...the special coconuts that were picked, the boat ride to the private island, the paper mache he made for my daughter, the sharing of his mum's homecooked meal, little kids coming up to me just to shake my hands...I could go on. I also loved the muezzin's beautiful call which awoke me spiritually. Words cannot do justice to my experience. I feel like I left my heart on Mathiveri Island...I can't wait to go back someday.

After backpacking 15 moths in SE Asia we decided to sped the end in he Maldives As it is not possible to do backpacking there, you have to pay accommodation in advance, we decided for Mathiveri island because it is possible to get here by a cheap local ferry and Mathiveri inn was the only accommodation that we found there. Also all the positive references were important for us and also the fact that you can go (when the tide is low)to the nearby sand bank and an island where there is nobody and you can swim in the bikini there. (but we also saw foreigners to sunbathe in the bikini on the main island).

Our experience was totally different and spoilt the stay to the big extend. Now I think that the references must be fake .

ROOMS - our was quite clean, but no window, the bathroom was very small. The cleaner did not clean it not very well, even if twice a day. We have to ask about fresh towels later which should be given every day without asking. Even once he entered the room at 8 a.m., I was almost naked and my daughter was sleeping so he woke her up, Next day we came back from the beach and the room was clean, but it was not locked!
MEALS - we paid for a room wit breakfast included. The water, local guy, was a complete disaster. With poor English, very slow - he was bringing the breakfast in several parts in 10 min. each so the breakfast lasted 1 hour! And meanwhile we still had to remind him to bring something. The last day when we were supposed to leave and they all knew it - the waiter should have woken us up at 6.30 - he came to ell us at 6.55. We came to the restaurant at 7.10. At 7.15 we got coffee and juice. At 7.30 we had to go and remind him that we were there waiting for the breakfast. The cook (Ismael's sister in law) came at 7.40 and at 7.50 we got the breakfast!!We had to hurry up the very much to catch the ferry. (there are only 3 ferries in a week and the next day was our flight to London). Something incredible.
As we are vegetarians we were eating only dhal, it was quite good, but once we waited for it 45 min. even if we told them 1 hour before coming to the restaurant.
Once we wanted to have a change so we ordered pasta - it came totally hard, and once we had curry - even if we told them that we wanted it not spicy - it was so hot that it was impossible to it it.
Restaurant was also closed most of the day so when we came earlier from he beach we had to go and buy some bread and cheese in the shop...
Locals we re not friendly, mainly women and old people but also children which was a bad surprise. That was pity, we were looking forward to talking to local people because we have travelled a lot in the world and the locals everywhere have been very important for us.
What was very annoying - local men were constantly entering the restaurant in the evening and looking at the guests, bar which was supposed to be for guest was also full of local men watching football with their legs on the table, shouting and smoking.

Ismael is a business man He is interested only in the money, not in the guests at all. Do not expect him to do anything special for you even if he is smiling. Once we asked for a 1 slice of cheese for the breakfast - it is not included - we did not get it. We should have had 1 snorkeling trip - he told us every day that the sea was too rough....He was every time talking to us with sunglasses on, picking up the telephones while we were sorting out the bills or just talking to him Very rude.

Later we found Casa Mia in the island - it is something between guest houses and resorts, 180 - 200 USD for a BIG beautiful room and also very big and nice bathroom, all meals included - we reccommend it very much! Facing private beach, or you can also go to the sand bank and the small island. But as mentioned above, we had already paid for our accommodation in Mathiveri inn.

The Mathiveri inn is ovepriced and all the people around are totally uninterested in he guests.

Thank you for staying at Mathiveri inn ,

As Mathiveri Island destination and that guest houses are much different from resorts, so we aim to be as clear and open as possible to prevent issues with mismatched expectations. In this case, there has obviously been a misunderstanding about what a guest house stay is and what to expect.

As we have mentioned many times - this is not a resort. That's not to say we don't have standards - we do - and we've been through inspections by the Ministry of Tourism. As we are trying our best to welcome everyone to spend their holiday in Maldives. Since Maldives is marketed as luxury holiday destination which has a huge price. Therefor we are doing our best to market low budget holiday for everyone.

About Food. we had tried our best to serve your vegetarian food from our restaurant ,even some of food they requested was not in the menu but we manage to provide them. we had inform before that most of the curry ingredients includes chili powder as we manage this to reduce the spicy with coconut milk which we had provide you in extra. The restaurant is not only for guest also for locals around the island so there is no restriction for local people to enter the restaurant. Restaurant opening ours are morning 07:30 to 11:00hrs and 14:00hrs to 00:00hrs.

Staff : This is a small business run by a Maldivian Family that has neither the financial nor staffing resources of a resort. As they were expecting something similar like Maldives Luxury resort, which is just unrealistic. The cost difference also indicates that facilities and services will be different from a resort. It is true less of our staff are poor in English but they had done their best to serve you, the room service we normally provide twice a day which you had agreed to make once in a day , our staffs always make sure that if guest are in room they first knock the door and get the permission first for entering the room.

Bikini ; our hotel is located in Mathiveri which is not a resort, or uninhabited island , on government regulation it is prohibited to wear bikini on any local island and we are informing all guest about this regulation , but we provide information that bikini is allowed on Mathiveri finolu (bikini island) a separate uninhabited island near to Mathiveri which there is no restriction. As you had mentioned there are some guest wearing bikini on Mathiveri island beach which from other hotels in Mathiveri island we do not inform to them cause it is not our responsibility and its up to other guest houses , we more care about our hotel arrivals and we are responsible for their behavior around the island. You are true there are guest wearing bikini on Mathiveri Beach. For this reason we don’t want to fine charge to our guest by local council in island.

About the reviews which we got in past is not a fake and it has been reviewed by customers which had spend there holiday in Mathiveri inn . As you seemed to be looking for issues . It is truly a saddening to know that misinformation can destroy a reputation so hard to build in just a few words.

Once again we are truly sorry for not being able to provide the holiday that you wanted.

Thank you
Gaisim Mohamed

I had a dream to be on an island, like the ones you see in magazines. I stepped off the boat onto an island paradise... It was everything I had imagined. The white sand beneath my feet cushioned my every step...my dream became a reality. The next few days were spent getting to know the place, the locals and the fine island cuisine. We made lots of friends mostly locals and some foreigners like us. The locals were warm and sincere and we felt safe strolling around the island after dark. If you feel the need to get away from the humdrum of work then I recommend an Island getaway and there is no better place for that than at the Mathiveri Inn.....Simply Superb..

Room Tip: Choose room no.1 it is the largest.
