We stayed on the island for 10 days at the beginning of May. We chose a beach cottage because we wanted a holiday on the beach and all the rooms on the beach have the beach right in front ( perfect for early morning swims watching the sunrise! ). Modern, classically designed and kept very clean, the sem-detached cottage we had was a perfect retreat from the perfectly hot , sunny weather. The snorkelling and diving were the best yet out of the six islands we have so far visited in the Maldives. The staff were all very helpful and the food varied enough to have something different everyday of our stay and of a very good quality it was too. Couldn't recommend this island enough and personally can't wait to go back.

We stayed in water villa 20 for our honeymoon - I think 90% of people there were on honeymoon - and were very impressed. The water villas on our side are a leisurely 5 minute snorkel away from the exit to the reef where we saw sharks. eagle rays, a turtle and more fish than you can shake a stick at. There was even an octopus living in some coral just under our front door - which was pointed out by our fantastic room service chap Hassan.

The water villas on the other side - the so-called 'sunset view' - seemed a lot further from the reef so I was glad we had been given one with a 'lagoon view'.

The room was very well appointed with a large outdoor space which we hardly moved from.

The food in the water villa restaurant was great. I think the chef is Italian so there were lots of pasta dishes which was fine for us because we love Italian food. There were also lots of fish on the menu - as you'd expect - as well as the occasional Maldivian curry. We ate in the beach villa buffet a couple of times too where the food was also impressive. We were told by other guests that it cost $50 per person for beach villa residents to eat in the water villa restaurant. This seems to me quite expensive - although the food was a bit better and you get full table service in the water villa restaurant.

My wife had a couple of massages in the spa which she described as 'transformative' so I think she enjoyed it.

We took one excursion - a fishing trip at dusk. We didnt catch any fish but it seems churlish to moan about that!

It is the perfect place for an island get away and I would recommend it.

We have just arrived home after a perfect week in Diamonds Athuruga Beach & Water Villas. We stayed in water villa number 18 which was on the reef side... we did request the reef side when making the booking and were extremely happy with the position of our water villa.

There were a couple of rain showers and cloud in the first day or so but this just added to the whole beauty of the island! The rest of the week was beautiful sunshine. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the water villa restaurant each lunchtime and evening, and contrary to some past reviews which I have read, the atmosphere was very good and the restaurant was full each night... we really enjoyed the food and choices. We had breakfast on our deck each morning to take full advantage of the stunning views.

We also enjoyed trying lots of different cocktails in the bar with new friends!!!

I had a hot stone massage which was probably the best I have had - it was really relaxing. The reef was absolutely out of this world... we snorkelled each morning and were so impressed with the reef and the thousands of fish which we saw – lots of reef sharks, stingrays, manta rays, and we were incredibly lucky to spot two amazing sea turtles too.

We flew with Emirates and were very happy with the flights. We were transferred to Athuruga by seaplane and had taken the advice to pack an overnight bag just in case our suitcases had to come to the island via dhoni and did not arrive until the following day. Luckily this did not happen and the suitcases came on the seaplane with us too.

I would certainly recommend Athuruga and would go back again in a heartbeat... you could not help but fall in love with it.

We arrived at Male airport following 7 days in Sri Lanka and were directed to air Taxi Maldivian Air Taxis, we were then taken to their departure lounge which was very modern and plush and there we waited for our sea plane taxi to the resort. The only gripe we have was the lack of communication/information about the wait about an hour and forty five minutes. We had to pay excess luggage, over 20kgs and you pay about $2 US per kilo. Nevertheless the plane ride was amazing, seeing the small beautiful islands and then on to our island paradise.

We stayed in the Water Villas as it was our honeymoon. They are absolutely amazing, really well equipped, decorated to a high standard and immaculately clean. Fridge stocked daily, AppleMac computer in the room (although not in the beach villas) and best of all inclusive laundry service! The view every day is to die for, there's fish, rays, sharks (small ones) and beautiful coral on the island's reef, some water activities, however you become so relaxed it's difficult to move to take full advantage!

You don't need shoes, except on the water villa deck during midday as it can be hot! /they even provide water bowls on the deck for you to wash off the sand. The food is amazing, we ate only in the private water villa restaurant, and this was a relief from buffet style menus where you eat till you burst! There's a full list of premium brand cocktails at the beach bar and at the water villa restaurant. The best bit was breakfast delivered to your water villa each morning .... heaven.

This is truly a magical island paradise, beautiful sunsets, star gazing and even being able to see the milky way which takes your breath away.

Can't wait to come back!!!

It is easy to find negative things about a holiday but I will list the positives before I talk about the negatives. There are two restaurants one buffet style which was fantastic with specific BBQ chef, Pizza Chef and Pasta Chefs. The over water restaurant is for the use of the Water Villa occupants. These dose create an 'us and them' situation which frankly could be avoided. Free laundry service. Free snorkel gear. The I Macs in the rooms are fantastic. Free Wi Fi. Cocktails included in the all inclusive. Mini bar included in the all inclusive. Breakfast in your room option again for the water villas. But the reef is fantastic! 1000s of fish. We saw rays, Sharks and a Turtle.

Room Tip: Some of the water villas are a bit of a walk.

Athuruga, Maldives - we thought places like this only existed in dreams..........but it DID exist, and it was truly amazing.
From the moment the seaplane landed we were in awe.
My partner and I stayed in a beach bungalow - no more than 8 strides from the waters edge. The bungalow (no.15) was of a high standard, simply furnished (you don't need lots of mod cons! Who needs TV when you've got the Indian Ocean!) having dark wood floors, ceiling and furniture - and a lovely big comfy bed. You also get a verandah with 2 steamer chairs to the front and a semi open bathroom at the rear meaning you can shower under the stars. Why stay in a water villa? Don't know really.........most wore shoes all the time cos the jetty was hot, although there were water bowls for your feet (so much for no news no shoes)They all seemed to eat at our restaurant and drink at our bar, even though they had their own - I must admit that we did go to the water villa's bar one evening and the atmosphere was zero and no-one else was at the bar! Entry to the sea for the water villas was via steps - but there was a lot of sea slugs around this area - and we never saw anyone getting into the sea from their villa (our bungalow was near them on the lagoon side, which had a nice steady breeze so you never felt too hot) When you walked round the other side by the higher numbered villa's - it was far too hot and no breeze and mostly in shadow by the afternoon. It took about 7 mins to walk around the island!
The snorkelling on the house reef was excellent - such an abundance of colourful fish and corals. The best section of the house reef was if you go out through the channel by the water villas, turn left and head along the reef edge towards the main jetty. For those who who want to get to know the fish species or are not so confident in the water - you can snorkel the house reef twice a day in small groups with the two resident marine biologists - its brilliant and its free! There are many organised trips to other reefs and thilas also, we went on two of these trips and also visited a sand bar in the middle of the ocean - now that was awesome! We were taken out on the hobie cat which was really great fun - we were on it within half an hour of asking, so no hanging around there!
I went on a couple of Scuba dives which were good (felt a bit on my own as the Germans kept to themselves - I felt a bit like Billy no mates! This is why I only made 2 dives ) to be honest I saw more when we snorkelled on the house reef. I also did a night snorkel with the marine biologists and saw a large manta ray.
The restaurant was buffet style with different themes each night, and was always good whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. You have your own table and waiter for the duration of your holiday. There was entertainment most nights of a laid back nature - the casino night (pretend money!) and hubble bubble nights were good fun.
The bar was waiter service, which was very efficient and there was a good selection of premium brand drinks and cocktails to choose from.
It doesn't get better than this - we were truly spoiled!

This is a small island with 25 water villas & 25 Beach villas. We stayed in a water villa. very smart, clean , shades of white ( water villas built 1 year ago). Includes a la carte restaurant ( for water villas only) serving Italian and Asian top quality food. All meals served there (allocated table) but you can also try a barbecue on the island as the fish is the best you can eat! . We don't do buffet food but tried one day + were very surprised by the quality of food, the variety and the service.
Stayed 10 days, and although was very nice, next time will do 2 islands or extension Sri-lanka as there is nothing to do but snorkelling around the georgous inhouse coral reefs. Walking around the island takes 10 minutes!
Don't be too attracted to sister island with its bran new water villas as its a replica of Athuruga but more expensive and coral reef not so good!
This is an Italian run island, 60% italian + equal amount of German/English customers. Different & really nice atmosphere. Jan perfect time of the year to go. Last june/july lots of rain and generally fair amount of wind with temp 27 av, 26 @ night. Ideal but could do with less wind. ( this is one thing no one can do a thing about!!)
