Athuruga is stunning! We recently stayed here for our 25th wedding anniversary. We booked with Kuoni and from the start of the trip until we arrived back in the UK, the service was exemplary.

We took the seaplane from Male and the view of Athuruga was breathtaking. We were given Water Villa 15 on the reef side. If you love snorkelling, this is the perfect side as you are just steps away from the most fantastic reef. The sunset side is just as lovely but access to the reef would be from the jetty or beach.

The Water Villas are beautifully decorated and clean. Apple Macs are available in all the Water Villas so you can keep in touch with family and friends.

The Water Villa restaurant offers personal service and a la carte menu. The staff on Athuruga are all really friendly and catered for your every need. One thing I would recommend is if you are staying in the Water Villa try the buffet restaurant at the beginning of your holiday and then if you wish you can mix up where you have your breakfast or lunch - just inform the WV staff.

If you decide on Athuruga, you will have an amazing time.

We arrived in an air taxi in a down pour. The Dhoni (boat) dropped us off on the water villa side of the island before dropping the rest of the guests. There was a reception for just the WV guests. We had a welcom plate of fruit. Then were taken in a golf buggy the 30 seconds down the walkway to our villa. We stayed in the first water villa next to the restaurant. Every day twice a day the cleaner would come and tidy up and make the bed.
In the afternoon we also got a fruit and sandwich plate delievered to our room but the best bit was having our breakfast (order what you want the night before) in our very own deck. The deck was very private looking at the ocean as you can have curtains drawn on either side. Breakfast consisted of hot drinks, juices, pancakes and little pastries and fruit and cereal. The water restaurant was lovely. You get the same table every day to have breakfast (if you wanted to) and lunch and dinner. We had the table nearest to the island. Best table as all the fish and sharks are right next to you. There isnt a huge choice for lunch and dinner and some portions tend to be small (posh food lol). My husband tends to eat more than your usual person so we ended up ordering 2 starters and 3 main courses. We also went to the main restaurant on the island where the buffet was amazing. SOOO many choices. The usual salad station and diffrent themed nights. Also they had a pasta station (italian resort after all) and the best thing was an icecream sundae station...yummy. We paid $190 for a candle light diner on the beach. Now Im going to be realy picky and say that if it wasnt for the fact that it was our honeymoon it certainly wouldnt be worth it. Think they used some tea lights from the night before so they went out quite quickly. The position of the table was very near the main restaurant possibly to make it easier for the staff but it meant poeple kept passing us...and with the tea lights gone and not much attention from the staff we couldnt see what we were eating. On the plus side there was a LOT of lobster. The island is very small and informal which is great. You should deffinatly take advantage of the free guided tour of the house reef. The guide dives like a fish and points out so much that you may have seen yourself but didnt know what it was. The house reef was amazing and the best I'd seen in my short time in the Maldives. We saw some eagle Rays and a Turtle and a lobster and a few other things. We had a couples massage which was great except the open air room could over hear everything and there seemed to be some sort of machinary near by that was very loud. There is a free excursion to the fishermans island. About an hour away its more of a chance to shop. A tiny island with locals and a few touristy shops. We did the night fishing excursion but didnt catch anything although a lady with us caught a huge fish. The night snorkling was scary more than anything. I couldnt wait for it to be over. But hey it was an experiance. Our bed was huge. Spoilt my husband whose over six feet as he could lie side ways and our king size at home just dosent seem as big any more lol. The villa had a coffee machine (again italian resort lol) and the mini bar was well stocked and included and they are happy to stock any thing you might like. We used the free laundrey service which took the maximum 48hrs..they say between 24 to 48. The apple MAC in the room was great for cuddling up and watching movies in between naps (which we seemed to need after every afternoon lol) Every day we saw diffrent amazing fish and rays just between walking from our villa and the restaurant. You can get free snorkling gear from the island if you dont have your own. As honeymooners your supposed to get a bottle of bubbly and bed made up (with flowers) on arrival which we didnt get and hubby asked if this could be done for the night we had our candlelight dinner. We did come back to the bed with pink flowers but no bubbly. We werent hugly bothered as the cocktails and drinks on the island are all included and very generous! Plus we already had a bottle we had won in the movie compition that we never finished. My fave drink was sparkling wine and was great to find that it was also included. The view was breathtaking and sitting on the loungers or soffas was great looking at the water fading into the horizon. The sun didnt come on to the deck in the villa we had but I'm not a sun bather anyway. Hubby has the kinda skin that needed tshirts to be worn when swimming so wasnt an issue for him either. Oh also in case you were wondering you get beach towels and bath towels. You also get bath robes and dressing gowns. So thats an honest a review as I can give. The place was amazing and calm and we loved it. The tiny little bad points I've mentioned above are just me being picky. It is 4 star resort not 5 star after all. We realy didnt want to come back. We could have stayed foreever and we cant wait to go back one day.

This was our 5th trip to the Maldives and each time it just gets better.
Athuruga has the best house reef we have ever snorkelled on and it can be swam any time of the day. We saw turtles, eagle rays, stingrays, manta rays, sharks and more fish of all sizes and colours than you could ever imagine. No strong currents either.
We stayed in a water villa which was out of this world, we were first shown to a lagoon view villa but said we would have preferred to be on the reef side we were moved the next morning without any fuss or problem. The room was huge and furnished to a very high standard. The bed was extremely comfortable, normally after a couple of weeks away we can't wait to get back to our own bed but this one was so comfortable we could have stayed forever. The all inclusive laundry means we won't take as many clothes with us next time (and there will be a next time, there has to be). The sofas on the decking were so big and comfy that we slept on them all night quite a few times. It was almost under the stars sleeping and so cool and fresh.
The food was excellent in the over water restaurant, although we now wish we had tried the restaurant on the island. We didn't as we tend to eat too much with buffets and thought the al a carte meals would stop us over indulging. I'm sure it did but the bbq fish on the island was apparently delicious.
If there is a negative then it's the over water bar, it isn’t covered and can only be used when it's not raining. Unfortunately we did get a bit of rain so we didn't get to use the bar as often as we would have liked.
But that is really a small negative as the bar on the island is perfect, over all Athuruga is the best island we've been to and has everything we're looking for when visiting the Maldives. I'm sure we'll be back next year. I’m equally sure you won’t be disappointed.

We stayed at Athuruga for our honeymoon for 8 nights mid to late June 2011. Having spent so much time deciding on which resort to stay at in the Maldives, we were delighted to have experienced Athuruga. Being for our honeymoon, we wanted to experience 'near Paradise' and choose a smaller quieter island that was not flooded with tourists. The island is small and about 25 minutes from Male by sea plane.

WATER HUTS
The huts are great and we stayed at water villa 9. Rooms are bright, clean, white, spacious, with mini bar, safe, air-con, walk in wardrobe, shower overlooking the sea. Bed was huge and comfortable. Balcony is huge with 2 sofas, 2 loungers, table etc - plenty of room and space to relax. iMac in room means that you have access to Internet, and also plenty of movies and music already installed. Also there is wifi so can check emails and Internet from personal device on balcony - simply fantastic! I would say one thing - we were shocked by some of the websites, that were on the history of the browsers when we arrived. Other couples who were there at the same time had similar experiences upon arrival - we have our suspicions!

One evening after a late night at the bar, I went for a shower and noticed a few cockroaches in the shower (natural in damp environments). Solution was to speak to staff, who also provided a spray which we used each night to repel the insects by spraying any openings in the shower room. Did not see any cockroaches after this.

The huts are so spacious and would recommend these over the rooms on the island. There certainly seems to be more private space in the water villas. One downside is that when it is windy especially at night, the wind and rain screens/barriers do get noisy. I imagine the beach huts do not have this problem.

If you want sun, go for water huts 1-12. If you want best access to reefs, the choose the reef side. If staying on island I would go for hut closest to the the jetties. The beach seems nicer here.

FOOD
Water villa restaurant is a la carte and generally really good. We had Ali as our waiter and was very pleasant throughout the duration.

Main beach restaurant is more buffet style and more choice than water villa restaurant. Would recommend that you eat here at least once a day, to mix it up, and not miss out on the home made ice cream which you don't get at the water villa restaurant.

You also get the infamous Italian singer on the beach restaurant. When I first heard him, I thought he was terrible. The longer I stayed, the better he got, and I don't think his sound system flatters him. To be fair he did sing some tough songs such as George Michael Kissing a Fool which he shouldn't. Every day just after lunch, expect to hear his version of 'we are the world' normally around 2.15pm just after desserts. I know some people have been disappointed by the italian singer but we thought he was very pleasant, funny and charismatic. His mannerisms made out as though he was singing to a packed stadium audience!

BEACH

Beach is quality and around 5 minutes to walk round the island. 10 if you stop by every now and then to watch the resident bird on the beach, the sharks and sting rays. Nicest part of the island is between the jetties, with superfine White powder sand. The water in is so clear and beautiful and the corals add a new dimension to the whole experience if you are snorkelling. A must do during your stay. If I go back to any beach in Maldives, I will make sure that there is a good coral reef to explore. No Coral, no reef = nothing to do.
Oh and lots of crabs on the island.

STAFF

Management and all staff very friendly. All were knowledgeable and helpful and always made sure that we were happy and welcome. Well done team!

I remember commenting on how lazy I thought a couple was after seeing them get a lift from the buggy driver on the jetty from their room to the restaurant. When we got a lift for the first time from the very friendly driver it seemed rude not to accept. These lifts soon became the norm!

In all, delighted with the resort and island. It really is Paradise and would recommend highly. Well done again and hope to return to soon.

We were blown away by the water villa with its stylish furnishings and huge deck not to mention the three different shower options. They have been designed so well and we couldn’t think of a single thing we would change. The pull down blinds on the deck meant that when it rained we could still sit outside as it was always warm. We were allocated water villa 5, which is on the lagoon side and immediately asked if we could move to the reef side as we had requested prior to our visit by e mail to both the resort and to Kuoni. We were told that it might be possible and to check later in the day. Once we had unpacked and had a wander around we decided we loved the position which had only one other water villa to the side as the other side had a jetty for arriving water villa guests. We also liked watching the sea planes arrive (up to 3 per day) and the lovely sunset views. The bed was huge and very comfortable as were the pillows with bed linen of really good quality. The rooms are huge and have a walk in closet with safe. Linen robes and towelling dressing gowns are provided. The water villas have wifi and the iMac computer, which was a really nice touch. The air conditioning was a godsend. The mini bar was restocked daily with beers and soft drinks. We rang reception to order a bottle of wine which was delivered in an ice bucket within about fifteen minutes. There is a coffee machine with various pods. Our villa was looked after so well by Shiyam, who visited us 3 times every day to clean and replace towels, bring sandwiches and fruit at 5pm and turn down the bed whilst we were at dinner.
The water villas have use of the over water restaurant and bar which serves a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is varied with various choices for each course - including carpaccio of fish and melon and parma ham for starters, chicken and beef curry, fish fillet and vegetables for mains and fruit and panna cotta desserts. The wines were very good too. We tried a California white on the first day that we enjoyed throughout our stay. We were allocated an oceanside table on our first visit, which was ours for the remainder of the holiday and had the same waiter throughout. We were told we could use the buffet restaurant if we gave notice. We tried it one lunchtime and were really impressed with the range and quality of food (in particular the ice cream and pizza) but though we were given a beachside table felt sweltered despite the ceiling fans so decided not to return. We were fortunate to have met a lovely couple at the welcome briefing on the first night and each evening before dinner joined them for a cocktail (or two) at the beach bar before heading to the restaurant for dinner. The cocktails were delicious – especially the bellinis. After dinner we had a nightcap at the water villa bar seated at the ocean’s edge and have very happy memories of stargazing. Special mention has to be given to the breakfasts. The first morning we ate in the restaurant but the following day decided to try breakfast on the deck, ordered the night before from a long list and tried various combinations of hot and cold, sweet and savoury foods with cappuccinos (they stayed warm with the blanket of frothy milk) and once tried decided every morning from then we would take our breakfast on deck. Such luxury eating outside having it delivered and with such beautiful views.
We have both snorkelled before and were looking forward to the idea of the amazing house reef from the reviews and forums. We were stunned by the beauty of the coral and the range and number of fish. We managed to snorkel most days (a couple of days the weather was too rough and the current too strong to risk going in). It was full moon whilst we were there and some mornings the tide was so low you could see the coral above the waterline but by mid morning it had risen sufficiently to go in safely. The marine biologists took groups of snorkelers on trips round the reef twice a day and held lessons for beginners. We left our fins at home as we knew we could borrow them from the resort and my husband borrowed a mask (using his own mouth piece) all of which were very good quality. Most days we went snorkelling twice a day. We saw eagle rays, turtles and stingrays plus an amazing variety of colourful fish some of which we know the names and others not.
Every lunchtime and evening the Italian singer entertained (not to our taste but others seemed to enjoy). There were activities such as beach volleyball and aqua aerobics in the sea but no one was hassled to join in. Most evenings there was something on – cocktails and canapés, films, presentations about Maldivian sealife. There were plenty of books in English, Italian and German plus a TV by reception (none of the villas have TVs). The entertainment was very low key just as we like it. There was a book where you could put your name down for excursions but we didn’t so couldn’t comment on those.
The all inclusive package is as comprehensive as you could expect anywhere but especially in the Maldives. All food and drinks including cocktails (excluding champagne and premium whiskies) plus those with sparkling wine, restocking of mini bar and additional drinks on request delivered to your villa, resident doctor and pharmacy as well as the laundry service. Also included was a trip to a local fishing island, which we declined as we had visited one last year and thought it would be similar and were bitten by mozzies (we did not get a single bite whilst at Athuruga).
When we arrived it was overcast and raining but the rain stopped in the afternoon. The following day started overcast but brightened up followed by days of sunshine and heat. During our second week the weather was more unpredictable with dark clouds and odd days of heavy rain where we were confined to the deck to read unable to snorkel due to the rough currents. These were interspersed with sunny days when we made the most of the time to snorkel and spend time on the beach.
Overall we were delighted with the service. Special thanks go to Ludovica, who was a real gem and Shiyam who was an unassuming but powerful contribution to our wellbeing and enjoyment. Our waiter Sola provided a very good service but we felt disappointed that when we asked on our first night if we could dine with the friends we had met at the welcome briefing (who sat a table away from us) for the rest of their week long stay he told us it wasn’t possible as we had different waiters. During our second week when our friends had returned home we were surprised to find our new neighbours who had arrived that day seated at a table for four with another couple who had also arrived the same day. We assumed this was a tip issue which seemed more important than good customer service. The only sour note on an otherwise perfect holiday.

My wife and I stayed there for 9 nights until the 15th June in water villa 15.
We flew with BA from gatwick, surprisingly good! and such an empty flight, no need to upgrade to world traveller plus, there was maybe 4 or 5 others in the cabin so you're able to stretch out.

As we arrived on the seaplane the view that greeted us was breathtaking, the sight of the vilas was awesome with the massive reef around the outside.
We chose wv 15 after some advice on the forum and it didn't disappoint, we were on the reef side as opposed to the lagoon side, to swim straight out from the villa is what we wanted and I would daily say hello to the lobster hiding in some coral next to the villa! the lagoon side with the low numbered villas 1 - 12 ish were on the side the sea planes land but then get the sunset.
We were really happy with our choice and would then walk out to the jetty or beach etc for sunset photos which were great.
You have the main restaurant for anyone or the water villas restaurant for water villa guests.
We loved both for different reasons, the food was fantastic but having been to veligandu last year I would say the choice was better at veli.
The main restaurant is buffet, with pasta station, bbq etc, the desserts and ice creams were lush!
The one down side of this was that we had to listen to the lovely and friendly and charming but bordering tone deaf singer - he seemed to sing the italian songs ok but dear lord when he was crooning out heal the world by mj it ceased to be a funny experience as it had been up until then and became a cringeworthy embarrassment, in my opinion he is the only thing that is less than perfect in this resort!

The reef -
There are guided snorkelling trips at 11 and 4 when the marine biologists take you out on the reef, i generally did 1 a day - regularly seeing eagle rays - in fact there were 7 playing around within hours of arriving - reef sharks, nurse sharks, turtles and maldivian nemo's , the reef is simply amazing, it's so dense and colourful with so much reef - compare this to veli and it's 1000% a better reef than veli.

We did a snorkelling trip to biyadhoo to see some turtles which was good - $38 plus 3.5% tax, well worthwhile - great to see a different reef.

The beach is fantastic on the island, the island itself is fairly small, maybe taking you 5-10 mins to walk around.
The entertainment was pretty good on the island, yes its mainly italian with some germans but everyone is really friendly, we enjoyed the casino night - great fun.

Some people have commented that it's quite a way from some of the water villas to the beach/island, .... not really. and you have a lovely guy in a golf buggy estate who picks you up and drives you round ! it's amazing but you quickly become pretty lazy!

Breakfast on your deck in the morning - wow, to be sat there looking out to the ocean munching away on french toast, great.
The room is well appointed - imac with films on if u need, free internet, krups coffee machine and mini bar with beer / soft drinks but not wine - we had 1 bottle free.

It was our anniversary when we were over there and the animation team so kindly brought us out a cake which was so sweet - them and the cake! and then the room boy decorated the bed on arrival and on the night.

We would love to return and hope to one day.

Room Tip: 15 -17 for reef side, 10 ish for lagoon/sunset

On arrival at male we were lucky enough to get a seaplane to the island within 15 minutes which was nice. I know of others who needed to wait 3 1/2 hours for there's. On arrival at the island the check in was fast and efficient and we were soon taken to our beach bungalow. ( room 38). This room had a fantastic bit of beach in the front and was on the non windy part of the island. In my opinion this was one of the best beach villas but there are all fine.
In the main restaurant you are allocated a table and waiter which you keep for the duration of your stay.
The food is excellent and there is always lots of choice. The desserts especially were awesome with homemade ice creams and sorbets which were amazing.
Each night in the restaurant has a theme such as oriental, Maldivian , barbecue, international etc. There is also fresh pizzas and pasta on offer every day.
The Italian singer in the restaurant at lunch and dinner is sometimes good sometimes bad and sometimes hilarious. However to his credit he asked us for our favourite song which was three times a lady. He didn't know it to sing but went away and learned it then sang it to us a couple of days later. We actually enjoyed listening to him and he was nowhere near as bad as some reviews on here make out.
The snorkelling on the island is amazing. I swam with turtles , eagle rays ,sharks and so much more. It really is breathtaking. The island also has a marine biologist who takes snorkelers out twice a day and points out all the different fish and corals.
There is a free laundry service which is great and your clothes come back washed , ironed and wrapped in paper just like new.
The bar is lovely and the drinks are strong. I staggered back to my room many nights after too many salty dog cocktails. There is a large selection of cocktails and spirits on offer there and also different wines beer etc.
Every afternoon in the bar you can get snacks like cakes, sandwiches and fresh pizza hot out of the oven which was gorgeous.
We chose to stay in a beach bungalow here because we love the beach. The water villas look very nice but you can struggle to get the sun depending which side of the lagoon your on and the bar and restaurant on there can be a bit lifeless. In my opinion the beach bungalows are better but each to there own.
The entertainment on the island was also good. We had casino night, quizzes , and talks from the marine biologist about the fish and corals in the Maldives. All were very professional and enjoyable.
All in all this is a truly amazing place and we loved it . If you are lucky enough to be going soon then I'm jealous because I didn't want to leave.
