“Very happy with our visit....”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

The staff at Diamonds Athuruga was wonderful....we really enjoyed everyone we met that worked at the resort, especially Farooq who took care of us in the water villa dining area.
My husband and I stayed in a water villa suite and were very happy with it. We loved the water access, the deck area and the easy access to the shower/bathroom from the water/deck area. The view was wonderful...we were on the sunset side and highly recommend it. I really enjoyed the snorkeling...the reef wasn't extremely colorful coral-wise but it had a huge variety of fish that were very colorful. One early morning, I was overjoyed to spend about 45 minutes snorkeling with a beautiful sea turtle...just the turtle and me while he enjoyed his breakfast of coral. It was one of the highlights of my trip. Sharks and turtles were not uncommon while snorkeling, especially if you swim out to the drop off at the edge of the house reef.
I also used the I-Dive center for 3 dives and really enjoyed them. The dive center crew was professional and helpful...and the sites were beautiful.
Diamonds Athuruga is a treat and one that I really enjoyed.

Room Tip: If you are staying in a water villa, I recommend the sunset side...easy access to snorkeling and les...

My husband spent a long time looking for the perfect hotel in the Maldives for our honeymoon and Diamonds did not disappoint. We spent a week in the beach villa and then a week in a water villa.

Everything was just perfect - we were so delighted with the beach villa that we were reluctant to move to the water villa (until we arrived in the WV that is...) The staff are wonderfully attentive without being too in your face. The beach villa is beautiful and spacious with an outside shower, which I loved. Walking straight out to the beach was lovely, and it's not too far to get to the reef. The snorkelling was fabulous - there are clear access points to reach the drop off so that you don't disturb the coral. We saw some sharks (not huge ones) but the best experience was having a large turtle swim elegantly past us. The beach villa restaurant was great - lots of variety.

The water villa was out of this world. Modern, spacious - not enough words to describe. the minibar was amazing- lots of wine and juice. The a la carte restaurant was just wonderful. I am a big buffet fan so was worried how I would get on, but the inventive recipes did not disappoint!

There are just not enough words to describe this place - wish we could go back every year!

Atharuga was one of the most amazing places we have ever been. We went for our honeymoon in 2011. I dont think that I have a single negative thing to say about it. The staff were wonderful and the food was excellent. The reef was just so fantastic and all in all we had the best time. Would go back in a second!

In October we returned for our 6th visit to Athuruga, our 7th to the Maldives. We have chosen a water villa on our last 2 visits, but never had any complaints about the beach villas.

The seaplane flight is a wonderful introduction to the island and our welcome was warm as usual. The island is compact, clean, mosquito free and surrounded by a wonderful reef with 3 easy access points. The new management team of Stephen and Tom ( and Tammi) are very much hands on and we can see the island is in good care. The staff have permanent smiles and absolutely nothing is too much to ask of them, Sola (hope your new babe has arrived and is healthy) and Anil are superb in the water restaurant, Ram and his team never forget a drink in the main bar. It amazes us that there is some minor criticism at times, perhaps sometimes people forget where they are and the logisitics of providing the fabulous food and drink in the middle of nowhere!
The reef is the main reason for being here, and it is fantastic. The coral has recovered over the last few years and is looking quite healthy, the sealife varies from year to year, but you can always be guaranteed a stunning display, be it turtles, rays, sharks or just the vast array of fish
If you want a wonderful, relaxing ( aside from the endless snorkelling) holiday we can safely say we've never been anywhere on the planet better than this. We would be back next year, but SWMBO needs surgery on her foot, so roll on 2015 and many thanks to all who have given us such wonderful attention during our visits.

We have stayed for our honeymoon at Athuruga for 2 weeks. Unfortunately there was no special given to us. Luckily we had great weather for almost all time. We had heard that it was raining 3 weeks until the day we had arrived.

We have stayed in a water bungalow all the time. A lot of space, nice house at all. Great porch, where you can enjoy your breakfast every morning. But in general we were a little bit disspaointed by lunch and dinner at the water villa restaurant. Service was great and also drinks, but food was not the expected level. Very similiar dishes called in a different way every day.So the chef is most likely a better marketing guy than cook. ;-)

Regarding snorkelling Athuruga is a nice place. We have seen different sharks, turtles, sting rays, dolphins and many more. But the corals are not very colourful. That you should be aware of. Also the big game fishing is very nice. E.g. we have caught a sailfish (32kg) and a lot of other fishes. In the evening the sailfish was at BBQ at the island restaurant. Next day catch of the day at the water villa Restaraurant!!!!! By paying a higher priceyou wouldn´t expect that!

One thing regarding service. The general Manager (Petra at that time) was not at the island. So we felt, that some of the stuff were out of control. We had also to wait ca.30 min afterarrival to go toour villa, as they had not enough staff to welcome 4 couples. After that long travel, thatßs quite disappointing!

In general we would return to Athuruga, but prefer to see many new places right now. But defintely a place to recommend!

A great place & very efficiently run, with lovely staff. Very popular with Italians & Germans (the food is somewhat influenced by this!). Our beach villa was very comfortable. This was our first visit to Athuruga, although third visit to the Maldives. We met many folk who had returned time & again to Athuruga, but had never visited another island. The reviews here probably reflect that. Having been to other islands, we felt the house reef was a little disappointing in terms of coral health (although we have never seen so many turtles!). The island does not really lend itself so well to sailing & windsurfing (although these are available). All in all a very enjoyable holiday & a great destination.

Our holiday on Athuruga was no doubt the best holiday we have ever had.
It was brilliant it every way. The location, the lovely villa, the natural beauty, marine life, sand, sea, snorkelling just could not be beaten. In addition to all that there is the lovely staff that just cannot do enough for you.

My husband and I had the holiday of a lifetime and we really did not want to come home.
Stephen the resort manager is a lovely man and does a great job of looking after everyone and being very attentive and listening to everything you have to say and will always resolve any problem or query you have. His team including Tom and Tammi were all also fantastic and we felt very much looked after in every way, completely spoilt. (Thank you Tammi for helping me when I hurt myself on the coral).

I cannot recommend this island enough. The restaurant was great and the BBQ every evening was simply the best, the most tasty tender meat and fish we have ever had. Our waiter Adam in the restaurant is a lovely man who always had a smile, time for a chat and never failed to remember our regular drinks and was always there to replinish our drinks when needed (hi Adam sorry we could not say cheerio to you in person when we left, thank you for looking after us so well). A big thank you also to the pizza man who never seemed to stop working, his pizzas are amazing.

We had a great time snorkelling every day and I started to learn to dive with Fabio - that was a fantastic highlight of my holiday, thank you Fabio. Everyone else from the Dive School were also wonderfully friendly helpful people, our best wishes to Enrique, Chrystl and Andrea. We went on the Whale Shark trip which was fantastic and we swam with three different whale sharks that day - just wonderful.

All in all, we cannot rate this island high enough, holiday here and you will not be disappointed - we will definitely be going back as soon as we can.

Room Tip: Beach Bungalow 25 - detached and near the reef - every room is fantastic but we would ask for this b...
