On arrival by seaplane, our party of 2 were greeted by a lovely and extremely helpful girl from reception. The manager was nowhere to be seen. On the 6th night we were invited to the manager's cocktail party, and I waited 15 minutes on my own being served numerous cocktails, with no manager or assistant manager to greet anyone. Eventually the French manager took a microphone, introduced his staff, who all clapped and congratulated themselves on the wonderful job they were doing. I was surprised to see who was actually running the resort. The manager I had noticed a few times who never bothered to say hello. Likewise the South African assistant manager although he had awkwardly nodded in passing. The other guests were far more friendly. Hotel management in this category should make a point of interacting with guests, and whenever they see them, ask if everything is ok, and if there is anything they could do. This management couldn't care less about their guests, and do not deserve to be running this hotel. I stayed at the Four Seasons Laanda last year, and they really know how to treat their guests. On discussing with other guests, they had the same experience. I did complain about it, and miraculously the manager made a point of finding me at dinner to discuss it, but when I told him what it was about, he had no excuse or apology and ran away as soon as he could muttering he did not want to ruin my evening. Management were conspicuously absent when I left. I can't comment on the Spa either, as when I went to discuss having some treatments, the manageress was dealing with a couple with complicated requirements, and after 10 minutes it was obvious she would not be free for a while so I left, and she didn't bother to ask who I was and if she could contact me when she was free. Again, lack of care by management.
As far as the food is concerned, there was a buffet 3 times a day, virtually always serving the same food, which became tedious after a few days. The majority of guests were Italian, and pasta was one of the most popular menu choices. The New Year's buffet at a hefty supplement served nothing much different, and did not deserve the supplement which was just a rip-off. One would expect good fresh fish, but all we got was large fish served in little fillets, which was generally tough and inedible, even in the Alizee restaurant. These buffets are available for almost 3 hours in the heat, and when dealing with raw fish, salads, etc, the way they were kept cold was woefully inadequate. I had a stomach ache most of the time, and other guests also suffered from stomach problems. The Mauritian wine waiter was very knowledgable, but he has sadly left now. There was a good choice of wines.
On the plus side, there was a terrific onsite doctor, the Italian staffed diving centre was excellent, and the resort is really well situated for good dive sites and whale shark snorkelling which, albeit pricey is an incredible experience and should not be missed. At 9 pm on the jetty, large stingrays and the occasional aggressive tuna are feed on fish entrails thrown into the water, and shouldn't be missed.
I stayed in a water villa, which although smallish was lovely (again rooms much smaller than the Four Seasons). The guests and staff were very friendly (sharp contrast to aloof management).
Although I did have a good time, this resort could be so much better. The local staff can't do enough for you, and I have nothing but the highest praise, but the management, if they could be bothered, could notch up the quality of this resort by another star.
