“Much better than expected”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

We'd read some poor reports about this lovely little island on here, and wondered whether we'd made a mistake booking it. We were meeting up with friends who I dive with who had been before and had liked it enough to return, so we went ahead.

It is true that the reception is a bit dire. We were told initially that although all 3 couples had booked and paid for superior rooms, one of us would have to have a standard room for the first night and all they were offering as compensation was a refund of the difference in price! We all stood firm and said none of us were accepting this. After a while they came back and said they did after all have the 3 superior rooms although only one was ready. We had lunch and got into our room after we'd eaten.

The rooms are a bit tired...bathroom especially, but the hard wood flooring is rather nice, the room was comfortable and perfectly adequate for the amount of time we spent in it. There was a tv, but all we could get were local channels, so it wasn't of much use. We knew there were no shampoos etc provided so we'd taken our own. They do provide face flannels and bars of soap though. Our room (134) had some vegetation between it and the beach but there was a clear path out to the sand. In some places where sand has shifted there is no beach immediately outside the rooms, but that's the luck of the draw. The pool is a real sun trap and can get rather hot but the pool is lovely.

The staff in the restaurant were very helpful and obliging. The buffet had a wide variety of food and the curries were very interesting, and tasty. There was always plenty to choose from and a good amount of things for vegetarians. The desserts were lovely, and we partook at every meal! I and a friend had birthdays while we were there and they decorated the table and produced a very nice birthday cake...they also decorated the bed!

The bar was a great place to sit and watch the sunset. Service was a bit hit and miss...some waiters were excellent, others a bit slow. We were all inclusive. You really need to keep an eye on what is included and what isn't. For example, you can get as many 500ml bottles of water to take back to your room but not the 2 litre bottles! Most spirits were included, but no brandy, and coffee and tea is only available between 4-5.30, which is a pity as the coffee was rather nice and a mid morning coffee would have gone down well!

The dive centre is excellent and the sites within easy reach are amazing. We had some fantastic dives during our stay...and if you don't want to do a boat dive, you can dive the house reef instead, which is lovely.

Despite the general ineptitude of reception, on our last day they were excellent. Our flight was delayed by 3 hours. The airport transfer was put back and they offered us a standard room for the entire day if we would vacate our superior room by 9am. We thought this was perfectly reasonable. We also got to see the standard room which had been refurbished, was a little smaller, but had a very good shower and a/c unit. It meant we had a relaxing last day with an extra 3 hours sunbathing! Our all inclusive expired at 12 noon and we bought lunch in the bar. I have to say, it was pretty good and not too expensive.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay. We really didn't mind the "tired" room as the island and its house reef were just lovely. We would definitely go back as long as they don't hike the prices (and we fear if they were to refurbish the prices would rocket like they have elsewhere).

We stayed at Eriyadu after last minute booking for Christmas 2013 /New Year. Chose it based on good house reef reports, small size and reasonable price (for Maldives). We were spoiled after visiting Veligandu & Thudufushi and tried to lower our expectations.

Transfer-despite our connecting flight from Doha being delayed by 3 hours (Qatar airlines-NEVER again) our transfer to the island went smoothly. Took longer than 50 min as the sea was quite choppy. My husband ended up with bad back after the ride, so seaplane transfer is definitely better and more exciting option if budget permits.

Reception/staff-we found the service overall good. Nothing to complain about apart from one incident with missing porch chair, we had to ask reception 5(!) times to bring another one! Everything else was great; our waiter was very friendly & attentive as the majority of staff. No issues with billing etc.

Rooms-we were allocated room 156 (I think? opposite dive School) on first night and it was awful! We did our homework and knew the rooms were old & dated but didn’t expect it to be filthy with stained & broken furniture. The beach opposite was full with sand bags-not exactly Maldivian paradise! We complained and were moved next day to room 137-MUCH better! Furniture was old but clean, great bathroom which looked recently updated and lovely wide stretch of beach in front.

Island-small and pretty, 5-10 minutes to walk around. Rooms/restourant/reception/bar need updating but all areas are kept clean and tidy. Sadly there are few sand bags (we didn’t see any on previous two islands). We also spotted few exposed wires in the sand near the sea defence walls-not only aesthetically off-putting but quite dangerous too! Also be aware that some rooms have no beach area.

Food-stayed HB & it worked out including extras for lunch/drinks the same as FB, would definitely recommend! Food was disappointing but as long as you avoid unchewable beef and another “western” food you’ll be fine. Puddings were nice and curries delicious. We wished they cooked more Maldivian food! Breakfast was ok & lunch menu at the bar was great value and tasty. It was our favourite meal as we could enjoy the food and great views from the bar.

Snorkelling-the house reef’s very good and easily accessible. We frequently saw turtles and occasional shark/ray, Nemo fish and usual parrot, clawn fish etc. We even spotted some dolphins twice near the beach. Overall snorkelling is very good and would have been excellent had we not been previously to Thudufushi where the reef/fish variety were more superior. My husband did some diving and said diving sites were good but not as spectacular as at other atolls. I went on excursion to Manta point and was very lucky to snorkel with 2 mantas for an hour!! Unforgettable experience, it made mine holiday!

Overall Eriyadu is nice little island but could be so much better! I would go back if the price was right (just to snorkel with mantas) but at the end of our stay we both wished we had paid more (33%) and went back to Thudufushi.

If you want pristine 5* luxuries, don't go to Eriyadu.
If you want a simple, beautiful island unspoilt by housing estates of water bungalows and un-necessary "luxuries" such as Jacuzzis and plunge pools, and with a superb house reef, then book up today.
The food is not fantastic but there is always plenty and there are lots of choices for all tastes. Other reviews have mentioned mosquitoes as an issue but I never saw any and the island was fumigated near the end of our stay. One issue we did experience was ants in the bathroom, but the staff dealt with this immediately.
We would return next week!

Under different management and some room renovation this might be an excellent resort. The resort staff was very friendly but rather incompetent, especially the reception and bar staff. The restaurant waiters were very friendly. The rooms were large but quite basic and nothing like the pictures shown on the hotel booking sites. The island is very small (about 100m wide) but has beautiful beaches, pristine waters and a large reef where you can see a lot of sealife just by snorkeling. However the highlight of this resort is the diving center (where you can either take PADI courses or go on boat trips to various dive sites - 4 trips a day). The diving staff was competent, friendly and very helpful. No need to take shoes or fancy clothes, its very casual and everyone walks barefoot. Free wifi in the bar/restaurant. They accept credit cards for everything. The massage was very good. I recommend the all inclusive but its a bit of a gimmick as they try to charge you extra for everything (not like a 5 star resort all inclusive). The resort is visited mostly be Germans and Swiss people so expect it to be quiet and peaceful :)

Room Tip: We asked to change our room because they were building a beach bar in front of ours. Ask for rooms 1...

If you are looking for a budget paradise, Eriyadu is definitely the answer compared to the exorbitant rates the other resorts are charging during this period of the year. We stayed for 4 nights in a superior sea facing room. The room was quite neat but the furniture and other fittings quite old. Hotel staff were very pleasant. All the arrangements were made well on time. Mind you there is no free flowing drinking water available, which was disappointing. The telephones lines were all dead during our stay, so room service was out of question. Food provided was good but lacked variety. Not much vegetarian option available. On the positive side, the island does have beautiful house reefs and the beaches are quite clean. The dive center is top notch along with the staff. Overall Eriyadu is a place if you do not want to splurge too much and the rooms require a much needed renovation.

While Eriyadu is considered expensive for resorts of similar standards in other places such as Thailand or Bali, it is considered good value for Maldives - a freaking expensive place. Booked a superior room that faces the sea, our room is right on the beach and only 10 steps away from the turquoise blue sea. Staff were friendly and helpful and the room is beautiful. They even made special arrangements to decorate the room for our honeymoon! The cable TV wasn't working when we were there and only three Hindi channels were available. Food provided isn't too bad but lacks variety and you tend to get tired of it after a couple of days. Overall Eriyadu is a place for someone who do not wish to splurge in expensive Maldives.

Room Tip: Get a room that has a clear view of the sea.

I was aghast when I looked at the prices from some resorts. Eriyadu does represent good value compared to them, but not compared to other island resorts such as in Thailand or the south Pacific. I was very apprehensive, given the strength of some of the complaints on this website. My initial impression was poor : I had arranged a transfer at 3.30 from the airport. At 4.05 somebody ambled up to the booth. No apology was offered. The speedboat transfer was pleasant. My room was ready and reasonably well appointed, although no hot water emerged from the shower. The pool and bar areas were both pleasant, although bar prices are a little high - unsurprising given the resort's isolation and their monopoly position. The full board included 3 big meals a day - a little beyond me. I only stayed 3 days but by that time the menu had become a bit repetitive. I was disappointed there were not more curries. There is a limited range of activities available, mostly snorkelling and diving. Few facilities for children, thankfully! Most of the guests were Germanic.
One warning: when I booked, the price included an extortionate fixed surcharge of c.US$250 for Xmas and New Year dinners for 2 guests - deeply ironic, given that I departed on Dec 22 and was travelling solo? Had I not noticed it and got the booking site to deduct it later, this would have been charged. This is an immoral and scandalous rort!

Room Tip: Check very carefully before you book for any hidden surcharges.
