Royal Island Resort & Spa

We visited Royal Island resort in the first week of June. It is a beautiful property and would give anyone an opportunity to "cut-off" from the rest of the world. The positives about the resort were as follows:
- the staff were friendly and they go all out to make you comfortable
- the island resort is straight out from a post card; this was our first trip to maldives and we were mesmerised by the turquoise water and the white sand
- we were quite happy with the variety and taste of food
- there is enough and more opportunities for diving, scuba, canoeing, etc.
- the airport transfers were smooth
- we enjoyed the shark and sting ray feeding excursion
The areas where we were not too happy:
- we sometimes felt that the hotel charges were sometimes exorbitant; In a hot and humid place like Maldives the hotel policy is to provide one bottle of drinking water and then charge USD 4 for a bottle of water; there was another occasion where we felt ripped off
- the open bathroom results in insects infesting the area; however, once we complained the hotel staff immediately gave us a bottle of insecticides and resolved the problem
- some of the things in the room like TV needs to be upgraded

Overall, a good property with friendly staff.

This resort is classified as 5 star and the only thing royal about is the name. Rooms totally average maybe even below average. The tv is the old tube TV not even flat screen and tiny may be 18inch. The plumbing is horrible the toilet flushes with grey water looks horid. The food I could not eat call me picky yes I am but I booked a 5 star hotel I expect good food. The service well I asked the waiter for some butter he told me its available on the buffet need I say more. The only good thing about the hotel is the Dive centre they are very professional. Long story short I booked 4 nights and checked out after 1 night and went to different hotel.

been there with the family to take a short break of less than a week.

+ nice 'secluded' beach villas with immediate access to the beach (as the name suggests..)
+ beautiful clean beaches with a great variety of wild life
+ very nice and attentive staff
+ proper gym that has been put together by someone who is lifting weights him/ herself
+ did not feel overly touristic like many other resorts in the maledives

- food wasn't always overly convincing (especially dinner)
- although kept in good shape, the villa started to show its age

usually i can be very picky, granted. but this resort and its staff managed to iron out the small shortfalls, so that we would not hesitate to return here again in the future. well done!

We spent 10 days at Royal island from June 6, it was a long trip from Australia but worth every minute.
The staff were amazing from the first meeting at Male airport they looked after us and got us to the island and checked in with a fresh coconut juice in hand and everything explained easefully with no stress. The rooms were lovely(not that we spent much time there) and serviced twice a day. They supply plenty of fresh drinking water in the rooms every morning and I loved the outside shower. The food was excellent and plenty of it(every night a different buffet) and the waiters exceptionally attentive. The happy hour cocktails were fabulous sitting watching the sunset. My husband did his diving certificate at the dive school I was happy to snorkel around the lagoon outside our room and work on my tan There is Ping pong badminton tennis billiards all water sports and day trips and night entertainment available so no need to ever be bored. Lots of different nationalities stay at Royal Island so was great to meet people from everywhere it had a very international feel about it. We had half board which was breakfast and dinner included and found this was plenty of food and we did take some snacks for between times which i would recommend. The drinks and restaurant food is no dearer than any resort in Australia and if you drink the happy hour specials probably a little cheaper. The day spa was amazing(though not cheap) and well worth a massage or two, the girls there are just lovely. I can't find anything bad to say about Royal Island it was one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had. We went in off season so was fairly quiet which suited us and the weather was perfect. We had a room on the south side of the island which was perhaps a little windy however I liked it because it was cooler. I Can't wait to return and hopefully take the family. If you want a Island holiday Royal Island is the perfect place to get away to and relax.

Although it's a very long journey from the uk, it's all worth it. I would have to say the accommodation at the Hilton Rangali resort is by far superior but the overall holiday at Royal Island is much much better. Food is fantastic, staff extremely friendly and resort brilliant. We were all inclusive and did think the prices people had to pay if not were really quite expensive. We did book a meal at the beach restaurant which we would have had to pay for but it was on the windy side of the island and on that particular day it was very windy so cancelled but it was going to cost us $112 each without drinks so you would have to really think if it is worth that kind of money. It was for a seafood buffet type thing so it may have boon good! Anyway other than that everything was great and it is the only island of the 4 I've been to I would go back to!

Room Tip: We were in room 153 which was on the windy side in May! Nice beach though and sea not too deep. I th...

The service on this island is absolutely amazing, I am quite surprised to read some of the negative reviews that staff was not really friendly or management is bad. We had absolutely no issue, when we arrived, we filled in a form and in few minutes were escorted to our beach villa 212 by a lovely lady called Norma, any transfers or trips were always dealt with efficiently with no issues. The staff in this hotel is the friendliest staff I have ever experienced, we had our dedicated restaurant waiter Nazim for 10days and after couple of days we felt like greeting a friend when going for our meals. Food was excellent and huge choice. Villa was lovely and very spacious, perhaps replacing the old TV might be a good idea as it makes the room look bit dated. Nature, beach, sea was absolutely amazing. I cannot wait to return to this island! :)
