“Friendly, clean hotel with stunning views”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

The Malangen Brygger Hotel lies about 50 km southwest of Tromso, on a fjord. The rooms face southwest, with fantastic dusks and sunsets.
The menu is limited, but of very high quality. The wine list was also very short - the Valpolicella was good, the Californian Syrah/Grenache less so. It is a shame that the kitchen closes at 19.30, though that does leave you with lots of time to search for the Aurora.
Rooms in the luxury cottage we stayed in were clean. The kitchen was well equipped. The beds, however, were a little too narrow and the mattresses too thin.
The staff were consistently friendly and helpful.

We went for a night stay at new years eve at Malangen Brygger to see the northern lights, away from city lights pollution. We stayed at one of the hotel rooms, the room was large and comfortable with stylish furniture and a great view overlooking the lake. Breakfast was great, although it could be improved with more variety.

A 15 minute hike to Camp Nikka was cold but we went there prepared with a flask of warm tea and warm clothing, twice at night with a short dinner break in between in our room. The northern lights was great that night, we also enjoyed some fireworks show for the new year.

The staff was also helpful and friendly. Our car got stuck in snow filled ditch, because we tried to avoid some tourists taking pictures with tripods in the middle of the road. The hotel manager was helpful in getting assistance to pull our car out the snow. It would be much safer to have some fence or light-reflectors on the road sides, because they were not marked, and it is hard discern between the road and the snow-filled ditches lining the road to the carpark.

The roads from Tromso to the hotel were icy and slippery, our return trip to the city was slow due to low visibility caused by blowing snow during a blizzard.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms facing the carpark if you want to see the northern lights from your room

We stayed over New Year 2013/14 in one of the luxury cabins which was really too large (3 bedrooms) for a couple but was very warm and modern and with balcony facing the fjord (with hot-tub -unused!!!). Only odd thing was only single sheets on the double bed so we had to add another. We had breakfast in the hotel (basic but OK), generally we self-catered as the cost of eating out in Scandanavia is v high. The staff were friendly and helpful, we didn't go to their New Years Eve dinner as that was the only clear evening we had and we were chasing the lights, so went up to Camp Nikka (right out of the complex, right and across the main road, then left up the hill and right then through the woods) and did see them -they were impressive although not bright enough that night to photograph. We were very lucky as the 2 previous nights were cloudy/snowy and also the forecast wasn't good for the following week. Very nice scenery roundabouts, especially towards Sommaroy. Driving straight forward enough with winter tyres on even apart from a close call with some reindeer.

I almost don't want to write this review because I liked it here so much that I'm afraid it will be booked the next time I visit! I stayed in one of the apartments - none of the hotel rooms were available when I made last minute plans based on potential activity - but it turned out to be a great option for me. It was way more space than I needed, but having a dining table to set up all of my camera gear before going out to shoot each night was fantastic. I coordinated a few activities through them in advance, and they were top notch - LOVED dogsledding in Lyngsfjord! As someone who does a lot of astrophotography, I couldn't ask for a better location, either. If you want to see the aurora in her full glory, just hike up the hill 15 minutes to their Camp Nikka! I did their group trip up there for dinner in the lavvo the second night, but I went up by myself the first night in the dark when the camp wasn't in use and it was great then as well, albeit a bit colder (!!).

I had dinner at the restaurant on my first night and it was great, but given that I had an apartment I truly enjoyed being able to fix my own breakfast. I'm sure their other meal services are equally good.

I'll definitely return here and highly recommend that you visit as well, the drive from Tromso is easy enough and your reward is some of the most visually stunning scenery. Go!

This is primarily a time-share or second home venture, but there are a number of well-appointed rooms, with a bed that faces out on the fjord - fantastic views! There is a lake side camp (Nikka) up above the hotel, after about a 15 minute walk inland, which has minimal light pollution, a great atmosphere, and from which we saw the Northern Lights. There were also some fine walks near to the hotel. The staff were, with one exception, extremely welcoming, and enthusiastic about the environment. They gave us good advice on walks, Northern Lights (which we saw) and generally made our stay an enjoyable one. They were a high point. On the other hand, the manager was less than enthusiastic, and made it quite clear that she was not keen to have us use the hot tubs (though the sauna was available). As a hotel, it was odd to us in having no room service, and no phone to call for service. Indeed, the whole place closes down after the evening meal (which is OK, but no great shakes), and it is important to remember your key if you want to get back in to the hotel late in the evening. Given the relative isolation from Tromso, we were amazed that there was little formal advice available on what could be done in the area, or additional amenities to make a stay more worthwhile. The setting and views are spectacular. The owners just need to do a little work to make a stay more fun.

The hotell is made up by mainly huts and small flats, some kind of timesharing consept. Simple and clean. Possibilities for fishing on the fjord, bathing not advisable, exept in an indoor bublebath Nice. The scenery and the nature are the best.

This place is a hotel and an ever-increasing number of holiday houses available for purchase - some of which the owners allow the hotel to rent out on their behalf. The holiday lets are NOT owned by the hotel - they are someone else's summer house. I feel it's important to make this distinction because the website doesn't.

We rented a "Fisherman's Cottage" that was clearly owned by a young-ish single man. On the plus-side, this meant that the property was stocked with everything you might need (coffee machine; DVD player; garlic press; etc). On the down side, the furniture had that 2nd home worn-out feel to it and there was no 'manual' for the property. Clean towels and bed linen was provided (though we had to make the bed). But there was a lot of badly washed (dirty) cutlery/crockery.

The service from the hotel (where we picked up the key) varied hugely according to who was on reception. The person greeting us on the first night was pleasant enough but didn't do too much to explain the cottage - just gave us the key and the WiFi codes and left us to it. Breakfast (which we sampled on the first morning as we didn't have any provisions after arriving on a Sunday) was simple and basic. The receptionist thought long and hard whether we could take this without having booked it (though the previous day's receptionist had said we could). And asking for cooked eggs produced a roll of the eyes and an "if I must" expression. After 30 minutes and no eggs, I enquired where they were and she produced them, apologising that the stress of her mornings activities was just too much!! (This was a quiet hotel in the middle of nowhere in October - stress was clearly something that she hadn't much experience with!).

Overall the cottage was comfortable and suited our 3 night stay in October with 2 of the night producing some glorious Northern Light activity - why we'd come). However, a 2 week summer vacation with a family would need some careful consideration. As for the hotel, I think they need some staff training - customer service was patchy at best.
