“An English country pub of the old school - idyllic and perfect!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2014

It's rare these days to visit a country pub that feels like a local's regular haunt, yet that's exactly what you get when you visit The Royal Oak at Fritham, tucked away as it is in a secluded corner of the New Forest. You need to know its there to discover it as it at the end of a no through road and surrounded by some great walking country. Simple, wholesome fare, inexpensive and delicious, that's what you'll find on the menu. If you're after chips with everything though you'll be sadly disappointed. It's small too, so don't be unduly disappointed if there's "no room at the inn" when you turn up. It's a popular destination with locals and visitors alike, but there is only so much space to accommodate diners. Don't be downhearted, just make plans to return another time!

“Best pub in the Forest!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2012 via mobile

This is my favourite pub in the New Forest. It has a small but perfectly formed inside, and best appreciated from it's large garden. It's food is simple - basically different variations on Ploughmans - but The Best Ploughmans In The World! Food is always delivered quickly. The location make you feel you are 100 mile from stress and the modern world. There is always a good selection of real ales, many of which are local. TOP TIPS - Cash only! Great location for cycling and walking before lunch.

“Good things come in small packages.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 February 2012

This place is small, but sweet. There can be no more than 10 tables inside, but I counted 39 outside! (nice countryside view). Clearly it is busy in summer. We went on a freezing cold February Sunday, and happened to turn up before 12 noon. I'm glad we did - there was a queue waiting for the pub to open! We took the very last table available as the doors opened - it was like the January sales - people rushing to grab what table they could. All a bit silly really, but a testament to how popular this place is. Roaring logs fires set the scene nicely. The local beers in kegs behind the bar looked delicious, and seemed to be what most were having. The food menu is short and of the ploughmans, soup, sausage roll variety. No chips - what a nice change. Lots of local ingredients so all was tasty - my homemade bacon quiche was to die for. Perfect staff, immaculate loos. Tenner a head will do it. Be warned though, if it is cold and you expect to be inside, be there for opening time if you expect a table!!
