“Perfect holiday home!”
Reviewed 19 October 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We have never been to Scotland before, so decided to go as far as we could.
Choosing the Isle of Lewis turned out to be a good choice and picking Marlene and Fraser's lovely holiday home was a brilliant choice...Sometimes when you arrive, a place isn't as good as what you expect it to be, but Lag Na Mara is even better then we expected. Fabulous cottage ...in a beautiful spot with a gate in the garden leading down to a stunning beach....we had lovely weather. We knew it would be quite isolated, so we stocked up with groceries in Tesco Stornoway, and ate in every night using the fabulous kitchen...after walking up mountains....along windy beaches , and cycling here there and everywhere...we loved chilling out at the end of the day in the house. Constantly looking through binoculars through the many big windows!!!! We also did an online Tesco shop! We went to the local church on the Sunday morning...which was a lovely service, and with very friendly people.
Marlene is a lovely person...very friendly and welcoming, and she even let me go out riding with her...along a lovely white sandy beach...so that was a real bonus...Gary had a nice chat with Fraser while we were out.We drove down to Harris...which is lovely, but Lewis is even better.
All in all.... a brilliant holiday... Also the scallops from the seatreck
Place were scrumptious...a quick fry in butter..done.....best fast food ever!!!!
Thanks very much Marlene......A very special place .

“Exceptional self-catering in idyllic location on Lewis.”
Reviewed 3 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

Just spent a wonderful, week at Lag Na Mara. couldn't have been better. We had everything we needed for home from home. This is really important on Lewis as the weather's unpredictable and you need a good base where you can cook and feel at home. This little cottage Is really exceptional. Immaculate and very well equipped there is everything you can possibly need to have a great stay. Huge thanks to Marlene for making sure everything was so perfect. We would recommend whole-heartedly to anyone who wants to explore this very special, remote part of the UK. A real gem.

Lag Na Mara is a beautiful cottage in a beautiful area. The cottage itself is incredibly well equipped. It is inviting and friendly, cosy and tastefully furnished. It cannot be faulted. The area itself is possibly one of the best areas on Lewis to visit. We were lucky enough to have a small archaeological dig going on behind the house which was fascinating. A short drive towards Uig and we saw Golden Eagles and another drive located Sea Eagles on Harris.
I am loath to say stay at Lag Na Mara simply because I love the tranquility it offers and want to book it again myself, but honestly, contact Marlene and book yourself a holiday there, you won't regret it.

This property gives everything it promises and more. We can only agree with every positive comment in previous reviews. This was our third visit to Lewis, and this was the best property yet.
We didn't eat out as we had our resident chefs with us, but had favourable reports from those who did eat out.
We greatly enjoyed our trip out with Seatrek, and would recommend this, check their trips to choose the right one for you. Also adjacent to Seatrek is the scallop shack, selling delicious fresh scallops, and free shells to bring home.
Everyone locally is so friendly and on one day out to Callanish stones and beyond we spent most of the time talking to people, at Herbridean Soap, The Blue Pig,Norman Mackenzie at Carloway Harris Tweeds, etc etc.
The property setting was great in all weathers, watching the gales form crashing waves, the rain squalls coming down the valley and out to sea, and relaxing on the beach or on the decking in blazing sunshine. We can fully understand why people chose this property for their wedding.
We would certainly recommend Lag Na Mara and look forward to returning.

Having been to the outer Hebrides several times we had high expectations for this beautiful corner of the world. Lag na mara surpassed all our wildest dreams - it is superb in every way. The property itself is spotless, spacious, really well equipped, cosy but airy, private, and best of all a small gate in the corner of the well kept garden leads straight onto a golden beach with green blue water and very few people. The rabbits and deer kept us company, and a corn crake woke us up one morning! Beautiful and accessible hills lie all around with lochans galore to take your breath away. The proprietor was lovely to deal with - responsive and helpful. We were tempted to write a poor review to make sure we can go back. We have already booked for next year!!!! Worth at least 10 out of 5!!!

“Superb Hebridean retreat”
Reviewed 12 June 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Lag Na Mara (“Hollow by the Shore”) is located in the tiny hamlet of Cliobh (Cliff) in the parish of Uig on the West coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Self catering accommodation doesn't come much better than this. The location is stunning, the house backing onto the yellow sands of Cliff Beach surrounded by rocky cragg and moorland. It is luxurious and spacious with two bedrooms (one double with en suite and one twin); a generous sized bathroom with large bath and roomy power shower enclosure; a large ridiculously well equipped kitchen with built in fridge, freezer and dishwasher; a comfortable lounge with sliding doors leading out onto a decking patio overlooking the beach; and a large dining room with picture windows that flood with natural light. There is also a utility room with washing machine and tumble drier. This warm, comfortable house is the perfect foil to the rugged and isolated terrain it occupies. There are two leather couches in the lounge to relax with Sky TV, a Blu-ray player, CD music system; even a Play Station.

This is very much a self-catering holiday. You can't nip down to the pub for a beer and basket meal because there isn't one. You're an hour drive from such facilities in Stornoway though there is the Auberge, a very highly rated (but pricey) restaurant down the road at Carnish and the Old Schoolhouse a 15 minute drive away at Lochroistean. To all extent and purpose though you're on your own here. There is a well-equipped community shop with a small café and Wi-Fi access a ten minute drive away but for anything beyond the basics, you should stock up on the way out.

If you enjoy the great outdoors and dramatic landscapes, and if you're not fazed by strong winds and the almost inevitable rain; if you'd welcome isolation (the sound of silence; no mobile signal, no Wi-Fi) and you don't mind paying a bit more for high standard accommodation; then like us you'll love Lag Na Mara. And when the sun does shine, you’ll find no finer beaches anywhere in the world.

“Excellent cottage and fabulous location”
Reviewed 8 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

Arrived just after the rain and the sun came out making the colours spectacular. The cottage was about 10 yards above the perfect beach (Cliff Bay). It was really comfortable and well-equipped. Never been to Lewis before and really enjoyed getting to know it - my favourite place was the amazing standing circle of stones.
