“Secluded woodland setting - beautiful and away from it all!”
Reviewed 23 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We had a fantastic week at the cottage with our 2 large dogs. The cottage location at the top of the hill overlooking the Black Mountains is fantastic. It is reached via a forest tracks through the woods. There is plenty of woodland to explore and a nice waterfall. We were very lucky with the weather and spent most of our time outside in the garden. The hot tub was much appreciated. Views from the cottage are beautiful. A gate to close off the garden would be great, but we managed to park the car across the entrance and blocked the last gap as a make shift.

“Very special place”
Reviewed 9 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We holidayed here for a week with our three young boys - we all absolutely loved it! The cottage is in the most amazing location with stunning views towards the black mountains. Lovely to be able to let the boys just explore in safety in the woods all around the house - the loved making dens and playing games. We loved the quiet, peace, views, hot tub and local walks. I really would recommend this place.

Emma was fantastic - attentive, helpful and amenable at every turn (even rushed out to give us a jump start when one of our delightful boys had left the internal light on in the car resulting in a flat battery!).

“Remote, beautiful cottage”
Reviewed 16 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

The cottage really is in the middle of nowhere, which suited us on this holiday. Stunning views from the cottage, very peaceful, you feel like you are close to wildlife. All was good inside the cottage, with the interior done to a high standard.
It was great to visit the waterfall within the private 200 acre wood around the cottage.
The mile long track through the woods to the cottage was manageable in a standard saloon (with common sense) and added to the sense of adventure.
We wentt with our little boy who is 2 and they provided a high chair and travel cot which was great.

“Location fantastic .. but cottage a disappointment”
Reviewed 12 January 2015 for a stay in January 2015

The location in the Hay Forest is beautiful with views to die for. Unfortunately the road in and marked path to the village have not been maintained. The road was really only suitable for a 4WD vehicle and the paths had not been cleared of debris for a very long time.
The cottage looked cosy at the outset but we soon discovered it was very tatty, unloved and uncared for, with nearly every item in the kitchen chipped, broken or damaged in some way. The cleanliness left a lot to be desired with stains on lamps, furniture, on walls, the sink and fridge were dirty. We washed the benches and the cloth was literally black! Cobwebs were everywhere even from pan to pan in the kitchen cupboard and round the bathroom sink. Very little information was available, no instructions on the use of the cooker (self-CATERING) and several of the icons had rubbed off the cooker knobs, so every meal time was guesswork on what would work! The dishwasher didn't wash the dishes properly and we soon discovered it had no rinse aid or salt in and likely hadn't for a very long time. We replenished these. The wood burner had not been cleared for our arrival and again my husband cleared it and cleaned it, including the glass on the burner doors. The burner doesn't work properly when it is full with ash. The settee and kitchen chairs were very stained and smelly.
The cottage is situated in 200 acres of glorious woodland, owned by the same people; however guests are expected to pay £30 for less than a week's worth of wood for the burner! This should be included in the considerable cost (the most we have ever paid for a property in the low season).
Positives:
The bed was very comfortable and the bedding and towels were clean.
The location was amazing.
All in all we would return to the area, it was gorgeous and the locals were lovely people.
My recommendation would be that the owner employs a housekeeper/cleaner to maintain the property to a good standard.

Thank you for your review on Cefn Y Waun although I have to say I am disappointed that you decided to wait until you had returned from your weeks holiday to voice your opinion on Trip Advisor rather than raise any issues you may have had directly with me during your stay.
There are two justified complaints here. The cooker knob icons have worn off and should have been replaced and the salt and rinse aid should have been topped up in the dishwasher rather than expecting our guests to do this. For these issues I am genuinely sorry.
The fire was emptied before your arrival. Cobwebs are a persistent problem with any old cottage in the middle of a woodland, I can assure you that the cobwebs are cleared before everyone’s arrival only to return within hours.
There are no stains on the walls as the whole cottage was repainted the week before Christmas ! The information pack has everything you need to know including my phone number should you require an answer to something not in there or to report an issue! The fridge was clean, I checked this myself after the housekeeper left when I left a pint of milk for your arrival. The sink I can assure you is clean, you may be mistaking very small hairline cracks for dirt, this is common in old Belfast sinks. The track is easily passable in a normal saloon car.
I am confused about your comment about the logs, you chose not to order logs so I can’t see how you would know how many logs you would get for £30. I can tell you it is considerably more than a weeks worth and we haven’t had any complaints about this, especially from someone that hasn’t even ordered any! You may have been referring to the small amount of wood that was left in the garage from the previous guests and you then decided to make an assumption.

“cosy retreat with mountains on the doorstep”
Reviewed 6 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

a lovely warm place for a winter visit - log burner as well as very effective central heating. incredibly quiet at night and with very comfortable beds and bed linen it meant we got some much-needed sleep! The kitchen equipment is pretty basic, but we found most things we needed: we stocked up with supplies, so that we hardly need to leave the immediate area. Emma provided a Christmas tree, which was a very sweet surprise on arrival. We walked to the mountains from the front door and found the waterfall at the foot of the hill. The private woods were great fun to explore. Highly recommended.

Think Snow White's cottage and you will have an idea of the setting, beautiful cottage, wonderful surroundings and a chance to enjoy the nature. Perfect place to take the kids and have some good old fashioned out door fun. Enjoy!

Like the title says, it's a very special place. The best weeks holiday for many years. Completely switched off. Ate some wonderful food. Met fantastic locals and browsed the local towns and shops. And walked for miles and miles with two dogs in tow. We will be coming back
