Discovery Island Resort and Dive Center

We stayed 4 nights at Discovery Divers in November during our 10 days long visit in this region. The cottage was perfect ! Large, airy with a very good bed and bathroom and beautiful view to the sea and islands from its terrace. But what I liked the most was the architecture of the cottage : tasteful, practical and natural. The food in the resort restaurant is average but OK. The services offered (transportation to Coron town, trips to near destinations) were very good, the owners (British/Philipino couple) and the staff were very sympathetic and always helpful to satisfy our requests. The resort in a word is amiable.

Stayed at Discovery Resort Coron with two friends from March 4-8, 2011. We had tried booking at dozens of places in Coron unsuccessfully before someone in my office recommended this place to me. My friends and I were SO HAPPY that everywhere else was fully booked and that we ended up at Discovery!!

I could honestly write a small novel about how great our stay was, but I'm going to (try to) keep this brief. We were picked up by a van driver holding a sign with my name on it right outside of the airport in Busuanga. He brought us down to a little bar at a dock by the water while we waited for the boat to take us to Discovery. This was a great first impression already, enjoyed a nice cold San Mig light while overlooking the bay.

TJ, the owners' son, brought us to the island (about a 5-10 minute boat ride) and upon our arrival we were greeted by Little Mama, one of the owners. She was so nice and welcoming. Next we met her husband Allen, and the rest of the staff - a bunch of super nice Filipino girls.

Our rooms were great - pretty basic but very clean which in my view is most important. The view from our rooms was spectacular.

We ate breakfast and dinner at the resort every day. No complaints about the food, and you should definitely try the Little Mama salad! The prawns were great, the curry too.

We did three full days of activities and the staff at Discovery arranged everything for us. The first day, we went 'island hopping'. Boating, snorkeling, and beach lounging.. with a few beers - doesn't get any better than that! We went to the local market in the morning too, picked up some fresh veggies to make salad and the boat drivers helped us pick out some good fish. While we were laying on the beach, they cooked up the fish and prepared our salad, took care of all the dishes.. and did everything! It was amazing.

The next day we spent scuba diving in Japanese ship wrecks from WWII - incredible. And the third day we went out about an hour and a half away on the boat to this secluded white sand beach paradise. Same thing - they prepared all of our food and took great care of us. On the way back we stopped for some snorkeling as well.

All in all it was a great trip. One night Little Mama and Allen even took us on a little pub crawl of the local little bars in Coron! Those two are the greatest. Other than our night out, we loved just sitting outside at the restaurant/lounge-type place at Discovery, having a few drinks, and meeting other guests there. Everyone is in such a great mood and so friendly on that island - it's impossible not to be!

Finally, a quick note... Discovery is not on a white sandy beach island (although I hear they may be importing white sand and making their own beach)... but this was no problem whatsoever for us. I imagine that if we were staying somewhere right on the beach, we wouldn't have done the island hopping or beach trips that we did - and that's when you get to see the REAL most AMAZING beaches - away from the main land. It was also nice being on Discovery's own little island away from the main strip in town at night. Quiet, beautiful, calm... exactly what you want after a very long day of fun out on the water! Plus, any time you want to go to the main land, you just let one of the staff know and they'll have the boat ready for you and the trip only takes about 5-10 minutes.

We paid P2000/room/night... well worth it!

Room Tip: Who cares - you only need it for sleep!

We've spent a week in January 2011 with Discovery, and it was everything we hoped for! We went there to celebrate our 5 years anniversary and got engaged there :)

The location is great, you're on your own little island, relaxing and beautiful, but a short 10 minutes boat ride from town, which makes Discovery very convenient as well.

The staff really made the difference. They made us feel at home, helped us make our schedule with great suggestions and locations, good cooking in the resort and on other locations while island hoping. We were picked up from the airport and taken by boat from town to the resort. The rooms are not the newest you can get, but they give a nice relaxed feeling. You get good value for money, the staff and environment gives you the added value. btw - there are no hot water on the island, but it's so hot anyway, you don't need it. Look at the sunset over the bay from the terrace, you'll feel all worm inside ;)

If you're a diver, Coron is one of the best places we've dived at around the world. Amazing spots and unique dive settings makes this area a divers' heaven. Discovery has good equipment, and work with very good instructors.

You can always go to town for dinner and drinks, and come back with the boat later, but don't miss out on sitting with the resort guests and staff at the end of the day for beers!

We had a great time, and were sad to leave and go back to the Beijing concrete jungle, but we know we now have a home in Coron :)

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff is really friendly and helpful, helping you out but not forcing you for anything or trying to cheat you. The place is at only 5-10 min boat ride from town and offera great sea view and cosy, calm environment that you can not find in town. The food is also good. They do not propose it on a daily base but you can ask to get a fish BBQ. Worth it!

Nothing to complain about really.
Staff are unbelievably friendly. Reesa is a gem. Alan and Little Mama, the owners, are great fun. Gin and Tonics are great.
The food is fantastic, unbelievable what they can make in such an islolated spot. That being said, Coron town is only a 5 minute boat ride away.
The Diving coordinator, Marcel, is a beauty. He's very good. The shipwrecks are amazing.
They have a nice walk around the island, but don't be surprised at all the trash (I'm assuming from the tide bringing it in).
Don't forget to go to the hot spring in Coron town... well worth it for a relaxing evening.
Enjoy!

Me and two friends stayed with Discovery for about a week in Feb 2011. The resort itself is set on a small island about 10 minute boat ride from, Coron. The location means that it's easy to go to and back from the town. The resort has it's own boats that make the trip regularly and the staff will give you a contact number to arrange boats if you want to stay out late (after 10pm).

The three of us stayed in two rooms in a block to the side of the resort and both rooms were clean, large (could have slept 3 easily in one room) and quiet. The rooms are fairly basic with bed, fan and seperate bathroom areas but really you don't need more then that. Our rooms also had wireless internet connection when available (see below) - not sure if this extends to all the rooms though. We had a nice balcony view from the rooms over the bay area

The resort has a communal bar / restaurant area as you get off the boat that serves simple and tasty food and drinks. Every meal we had (including the diving lunches) was well cooked and filling - it's not a 5* restaurant but it was more then adequate.

The resort has limited power supply - 6pm to about 10am everyday. The wireless internet runs only during this time. This wasn't an issue at all for our group as we spent every day out and about diving or island hopping and we're basically only there when the power was on anyway.

The resort does not have hot water. Again this wasn't a big issue as the weather is so hot anyway that a cold shower (twice a day!) was very refreshing.

The really nice thing about this place is all the staff. Allan, Little Mama, Riza and the rest of the girls do everything possible to go out of their way to make sure every guest is looked after and catered for. Can't speak highly enough of them, they made our trip very enjoyable and relaxing!

The place isn't big, which is quite good, and our group found it easy to meet and socialize with others in the resort. We like the odd drink or two and the resort staff were happy to point (sometimes lead) us in the right direction.

We did our 3 days of diving and 1 day of island hopping through the resort and their partners Discovery Divers. The diving equipment, while not new, is well maintained. Andy, Marcel and the other DMs were very professional and helpful ensuring proper dive briefings and equipment checks were done prior to the dives. During the diving they were always very attentive and careful to look after everyone in our group. It was also nice that the size of the diving groups were limited to no more then about 5 or 6 - some of the other dive operations we saw were diving with over 10 people managed with a single DM.

Diving through the wrecks was amazing and the DMs made sure that the technical level of the divers matched the difficulty level of the dives. The reef diving in Coron is not very good - stick with the wrecks and maybe Barracuda Lake for something different.

The diving boats are well equipped with toilets, kitchen area and plenty of space of people to move about and lounge around in.

We also organized a day of island hopping through the resort. It was a much needed day of relaxation. The boat was about 2,000 pesos but we split this between 5 people. There's a few places to choose from on the itinerary allowing you to plan your own type of day. The boatmen cooked up some delicious fresh tuna fish for lunch (an additional cost).

Highly recommend this place for both living and diving if you're looking to stay in Coron!

As some reviewers have said, the food was poor and you had no choice, you got what was served!! my wife and I travelled around SE Asia for 6 months and 2 1/2 of those in the Philippines and this was one of the worst resorts we stayed in. The location itself was good but the rooms were not clean, maintained, or in one case barely standing as subsidence had made it split in the middle. Water went off at night and the food was advertised as delicious, sorry but that was a downright lie. I went there for the diving which was great but to stay on that island and pay easily double the town resorts was too much as the facilities were just not up to scratch as they were in the middle of an ownership change (e.g.desert was some canned fruit!!, with lots of fresh fruit at the market!).

I was born and raised in the hotel business, have worked in them for many years and run charter sailing yachts professionally so consider I have an experienced opinion in this field and I say again that for value for money, this was a low point in the Philippines. We stayed at several island resorts dotted around the Philippines within the same budget and this one was definitely bottom of the list, pity as the area is very pretty with great diving.

The writer is correct - at the time of the stay - March 2010 - ownership was changing. We now have 8 new rooms, a new kitchen, two new service boats (24 hours if required) and a warm and friendly service with some good food too. Unfortunately this review was posted 11 months after the stay. The more recent reviews should reflect the improvements implemented by the new management.
