“What a Discovery!”
Reviewed 12 January 2011

My wife and I went to this resort just as the new owners were getting to grips with the place, and what a great job they were doing. It was obviously pretty basic, but they did a great job making our stay enjoyable. The food was great. I understand they have developed the place quite a bit since we were there - we must go back sometime in the future.

We enjoyed it because - it was a getaway from 5 Star pampered service of the city and regular hum drum life. That said, as far as we were concerned we were treated like 10 Star guests and it was a wrench to leave. We wanted to stay longer, but we had a schedule to meet to join the rat race again.

We didn't do any tank diving on the trip, but others staying at the resort seemed well satisfied with what was on offer. We did however book a tour on the resorts banker. It was amazing - it felt like we had all the time in the world - a picnic on an island, snorkelling, swimming, meandering in all sorts of inlets and returning to the resort while enjoying a fantastic sunset. To finish off, a banquet of an evening meal.

The new owners (sorry, can't remember their names) really made an effort to ensure we were comfortable and enjoyed ourselves - you can't ask for any more than that.

We loved it!!

We stayed in the resort in december 2010. We didn´t know what to expect and booked the resort via text message (a traveller in the philipinnes should really think about buying a phil sim card, everything is working there via text message and it is working quite well and cheap). We were travelling around with our 1,5 year old daughter and the best stay we had was in the discovery divers resort.
The resort contains 6 cozy huts in the middle of the forrest and a bigger house with two floors and 8 rooms (if I remember right) all with bathroom and fan. You can also order AC. From the balconies you have a nice view over the small bay. There is no hot water (but honestly who needs hot water when the outside temp is about 30°C?). It´s simple but clean. The banca (small boat) ride is just 10 min to Coron.
Some people wrote about animals at or in the rooms. We didn´t have anything in our room but on our balcony we had some geckos and tukos (which is good to keep smaller and annoying animals away). Anyway the resort is located between mangroves and rainforrest, so of course there are animals!
The food was excellent, we loved the fresh fish and our daughter loved the pasta! The restaurant and bar is small but nice. The trips you can book are very good. The staff will make nearly everything possible and listen to your needs. My husband was wreck diving and was so impressed. I was snorkelling and the boat crew made everthing possible that the divers and the snorkellers have a good time. Thats very rare, I made the experience that as a snorkeler your are just an annoying subjoinder on a diving boat and with a kid you seem like a worst case scenario for all but here we had a real good time!!! Thanks Luke!
And one more word to the staff... they are all so friendly and great. Our daughter was so welcomed, everybody was playing with her and kept an extra eye on her. We felt so safe and welcomed! We were really sad when we had to leave. We will try to come back so time and see them all again!

So I can recommend that resort to everybody who likes to have good dives and snorkelling trips and who is at least a little adventurous. It´s nothing for first class travellers who used to stay in big hotelchains. It´s more for travellers who like to get some contact and a nice and relaxing time.

This island is a great place to stay for those looking to escape Coron, but still be near to everything.
Simple, undecorated cottages made of concrete line the hillside of the island, suitably distanced from each other to guarantee peace and quiet. The views of Coron Bay from the cottages are beautiful. There is no hot water, and water shortages can occur on occasion, so keep the bucket in your bathroom full just in case.
This is a mangrove island with no beach, but there are deck chairs in front of the cottages and near the jetty.
Staff is attentive and generally courteous; they will meet you at the airport on request.
The decent but not delicious menu contains fish, Thai and western staples. For breakfast, the French toast is highly recommended.
The dive centre is well-equipped and the divemaster knowledgeable. Do let the divemaster know what your preferences and your limits are (you may be brought well below 18m even if you are only Open Water certified) and check to make sure a first-aid kit is on the boat before you get on.
Pricey compared to similar places elsewhere in Southeast Asia, it's still affordable compared to the other resorts in Coron Bay. That said, do make sure you enquire on exactly how much you'll be paying for accommodation and diving beforehand, know your conversion rates, and keep a close eye on your bills.
There's a 15% charge here if you want to use a credit card.

Menu being upgraded to add wider variety of dishes. Wide choice buffet and barbeque available for larger groups.
First aid provisions always at the resort and external boats now checked that onboard kits are available.
We charge 10% for credit card which reflects our costs on an island where credit card swipe facilities are unavailable. There are 3 ATM's in Coron Town.

I can't say enough good things about the Discovery Divers Resort. As soon as we got off the boat we were greeted with a warm welcome and the smiles and the courtesy continued the entire stay. They don't try to be more than they are. This resort caters towards divers and the adventuras kind. Coming back to the resort after a long day on the boats was the best. They have their own island so its away from the traffic and people in Coron town which can be refreshing. Lito the boatman is always available though should you want to venture over. Nights were spent talking about the day and talking stories with good food and some drinks with the owners and other guests. It has a very comfortable feeling and the staff really goes the extra length to make your stay relaxing and enjoying. I would highly recommend for others who are looking for a place off the beaten path.

If you're a first timer to coron, you'd do much better to find a resort located in Coron town, seeing that you'll be renting a boat to visit Coron island no matter where you are (that's where the main attractions are anyway). It's WAY CHEAPER and MORE CONVENIENT!

When we arrived at this resort, we were told that a full day boat rental would be 2000pesos, and that the entrance fee to each attraction would be 200pesos. This is 500p and 100 p respectively more than the STANDARD rates we found in town. Moreover, there are no FREE Shuttle boats to the main island. You'll have to fork out extra to go to town, a ridiculous notion considering the room rates here are easily double that of what you can find elsewhere, so the least they could have done was to throw this in for free. If you think you won't be heading to the town, think again. Meals, while included in the package, aren't exactly tasty, so you'll definitely want to head to the main town for meals.

But our main pet peeve was the unprofessional behaviour of the owner. Besides hovering around us all the time, what's worse was, when we decided to check out of the resort after staying for a night, the owner pretended to be sympathetic but later started making snide remarks about other resorts and how they were lowly ranked on this website. To disparage a competitor in this manner is extremely unprofessional and I believe this owner, who is English, has much to learn about Asian diplomatic ways, ethics and politeness.

The only positive remarks that can be made is that the room is clean, and that there is also a nice floating platform where one can sunbathe. Other than the unfortunate staff mentioned above, I found the local staff to be pleasant, friendly and respectful of one's space too.

Discovery Divers sits on government protected Decanituan Island (i am not sure if I got the name right. on google earth 12degrees 00"11.88" N 120 degrees 12'04.77"E). Mangroves surround the bamboo-topped island. That is the extent of my botanical knowledge. The fauna is alive and enthusiastic. A gecko woke me up from a deep sleep and made me jump across the bed, when I realized it was outside the cottage. Jelly fish and other small fish will swim by you from the island dock.

How to get to Coron
Plane from Manila to Busuanga, Palawan, a 45 - 60 minute land trip over rolling hills and a 5/10 minute boat ride to the island. Discovery Divers had their airport rep/tour guide, Riza, meet us in the airport. If you do not have arrangements with any resort, It seemed possible for travelers to wing it on accommodations as there are representatives from various resorts hawking transport and accommodations as soon as you step out of the baggage claim are in the airport. The highway to Coron is nestled between mountain ranges with horse and cattle ranches at the foot. Mostly paved, it the land trip went smoothly. We were dropped off by the van at the end of the jetty and picked up by the resort's boat from their bar in town.

Food and accommodations
Food is inclusive in our rates and since we were the only guests they would ask us what we wanted. Wanting to take advantage of it being a coastal town, well heck, an island, we would ask for fish and seafood. It turns out local fishermen would take their catch from the open sea straight for export to manila or overseas. We were not able to partake of a single lobster or prawn. What fish they were able to procure they served based on how we wanted it.

The cottage was clean, but it being the rainy season already, we decided to utilize the mosquito net provided. Warning to readers, if you are wanting for a luxury resort, this is not for you. Discovery is far from rustic nipa hut cottages stuck on an island, but it is no shangri-la. As of the week we stayed they did not have air conditioning.

Beverage such as water, yes water, alcohol and juice is charged per bottle. Tea and coffee (brewed) is complimentary. We decided to buy a 6L of water to save on miscellaneous costs.

Staff
Lito the boatman, Riza and Maricel were great tour guides. They pampered us. Riza made sure we had towels and fluids to bring on the boat. The staff will provide, make arrangements, give instructions for things to do in Coron.

$$ and how to pay
If you do not want to bring cash around, best for you to pay in cash prior to the trip. although they do accept credit cards - but not the way they do in Manila, so settle your bill early of you have a morning flight. Paypal will also be accepted by the diving people. What you spend on the resort would be billed separately from the diving charges.

Diving
Discovery's resort and diving operations are headed by different people. The diving group sent Enzoy for our requested intro dive. He was great! He gave the basics in CYC Beach and took us on a 45 minute 12M trip to see Nemo. A subsequent dive in siete pecadaos was 13.5M and we sighted a couple of barraccudas while an inquisitive batfish followed us around.
