Owner description: A historic home, bird sanctuary, park, and museum all in one, located in the house of writer and Nobel Prize finalist Baroness Karen Blixen (in the US and UK, Isak Dinesen), known especially for "Out of Africa" and "Seven Gothic Tales". The museum not only maintains the 17th century house, Blixen's furnishings, and the park, but regularly hosts exhibitions related to Blixen's life and work in Kenya and Denmark. Recent exhibitions have included an exhibition "HER" by internationally acclaimed artist Candice Breitz about Meryl Streep's career.

What do you expect of a museum dedicated one person? Flashy infotainment? I dont. To me the Karen Blixen museum displays the fascinating life of Blixen in a rather quiet manner, just the way she talked – but definitely not the way she lived. Being her home for many years you the place so beautifully situated is a sight even not visiting the exhibition. Take the tour in the garden. Go past the small pond, the flowergarden that still is used to produce flowers for decorations in the living room. Pass the field with the horses, and suddenly you will be standing face to face with the grave of Karen Blixen. Quietly situated under a large tree. So nice.

We were in Copenhagen for three days - so we rented a car and drove to Rungsted... it was nice to get outside of Copenhagen and it was only about 30 miles...we drove up the coast Roiad, I thought that the museum was well worth a visit as we had visited her home in Nairobi but there was no funriture. so it was interesting to see the museaum and the funriture from her childhood and the house in Nairobi... would definitley recommend

Close enough to Copenhagen, and beautiful house. I got a bit emotional to see they kept the gramophone Denys Fitch-Hatton gave her, and the chair he used to sit down in Africa. A bit disappointed you can't see her private bedroom, it would be lovely to see it.

The museum is Karen Blixen's home preserved from the time she lived there. She spent most of her life in this house other than the time she spent in Africa. The house is beautifully laid out with a display area and library and the living quarters in her own style. The house had a long history before Karen's father bought it and it is located in the sea front. The farm is now a bird sanctuary and those arriving by train have the option to take a 1km walk through the woods to the house. There is a good coffee shop on site and a small beach for swimming beside the marina.

The Karen Blixen Museum is lovely! It's the perfect day trip, if you need a break from downtown Copenhagen. It's close to Copenhagen and within walking distance from the train station (by a scenic forest path), in a lovely little town. The museum/park is right by the sea. The decor is at once bohemian and aristocratic--a strange gem in an very un-aristocratic society. Masai weapons adorn the walls next to dramatic flower arrangements and lace curtains. The park is lovely. The cafe is pricey but decent. The museum got a new director last year (2009), who has already brought several interesting exhibitions to the place--one about Meryl Streep and an upcoming one on contemporary Kenyan and Danish artists.
