“Casa Portagioia is simply the Best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 October 2006

My husband and I just returned from a most wonderful stay at the Casa Portagioia. It couldn't have been better. Terry and Marcello have created a little piece of heaven in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The accomodations, food...everything is top of the line. Most of all, Terry and Marcello have the true gift of hospitality. They took such good care of us (directions to points of interest, reservations for the Uffizi, dinners and wine tours etc.). The trip wouldn't have been as wonderful if it weren't for all they did to make it so. We will go back in a heartbeat. We feel most fortunate that we were there. Don't miss this jewel in Tuscany! Wow, what can I say except do not miss this place if you are planning on staying in Tuscany.
We have just got back from our honeymoon in Italy and spent 5 nights at Casa Portagioia.
It is without doubt the best b and b we have ever had the pleasure of staying at.
The setting is beautiful, you need only visit their webpage, www.tuscanbreaks.com to see for yourselves
The rooms clean, beds comfy and serviced beautifully daily
The pool so inviting some days we struggled hard to go anywhere else
It is perfectly located, easy to find and near all the sights of Tuscany and Umbria including 1 hour to Florence
The breakfasts fresh and filling with lots of choice
We had the pleasure of enjoying a 5 course dinner on the terrace under the stars one night and it was in all honestly the best food we had in 2 weeks in Italy
The attention to detail is evident everywhere
The best thing about the place has to be the hosts, Terry and Marcello were so welcoming and helpful, from daily help with planning trips to the bottle of champagne they gave us on arrival to celebrate our honeymoon
Do not miss this place!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only negative thing about Casa Portagioia is having to say goodbye and leave

My mother and I just returned from a mother/daughter trip to Italy. We spent 7 of our 18 days at Casa Portagioia and could not have been happier. Our stay was truly one of the highlights of our trip. At the outset of our vacation, my mother, who just turned 70, did not understand my desire to leave the big cities of Italy and spend a week in the Tuscan countryside. However, she understood immediately when we arrived at this B&B. She fell in love with the lush grounds, our beautifully decorated apartment, and especially our hosts, Marcello and Terry.

Terry's dry British wit kept us laughing, as we lingered over breakfast each morning. Terry helped plan our week in Tuscany, including making reservations, suggesting itineraries, printing train schedules, and explaining driving routes. Marcello's warm welcome made us instantly feel at home. His attention to detail is amazing - he prides himself on running a spotless inn with all the best amenities. The two of them taught us something about Italian history, culture, and wines.

The breakfast was wonderful, with every imaginable type of fruit, freshly baked croissants, made-to-order eggs, the sweetest fresh-squeezed orange juice, and perfect cappucinos. Lunch was available on the days we chose to lounge by the pool. Additionally, Marcello and Terry host a gourmet dinner twice weekly, which was an incredible amount of fun. We had the right balance of getting to know the other guests when we so desired, but having ample privacy and time to ourselves.

We had the upstairs apartment, which was nicely decorated with wooden antiques, a comfortable bed and sofa bed, and had a roomy (and immaculate) bathroom.

One bonus of staying in this B&B is that it's far enough east to easily visit Umbria. We enjoyed a day in Assissi and also the pottery town of Gubbio.

We will definitely plan to return to Casa Portagioia and would highly recommend it!

It was our first trip to Italy and we wanted to see as much as possible without overdoing it. We went to Venice, then Florence then drove down to Tuscany and Casa Portagioia. We were SO happy that we had booked it for a full 7 days. It was so beautiful and restful after having run all around Italy. It is located in a great location and easy for us to drive to all the neighboring towns on day trips(e.g. Assisi, Cortona, Montepulciano, Sienna). After a busy day of sightseeing, it was a great to come back to our "apartment" and feel the Tuscan breeze while sitting on a beautiful terrace sipping a glass of wine. Lavender bushes lined the stairs leading to the pool which further enhanced the beauty. Our hosts, Terry and Marcello looked after every detail with such expertise and genuine care. They recommended different sights and restaurants, etc. and gave us directions everyday. We stayed in the upper "self-cleaning" apartment which had a kitchen with all the amenities, living room, bedroom and bath. It also had it's own balcony where we could see for miles while enjoying some breakfast or coffee. It was truly a highlight of our trip!
P.S. Don't miss the 1 or 2 nights that they offer a gourmet dinner. It was outstanding!!!

We stayed at Casa Portagioia (Door to peace and tranquility) for 2 weeks (We live in Belfast N.Ireland) and from the moment we arrived we knew that we had made the right choice. The room was excellent , spotlessly clean , comfortable and had a great view. The pool was equally impressive. Terry and Marcello made us so welcome and were more than happy to recommend and book restaurants, give driving directions (but always add at least 30 minutes to Terry's timings to allow for delays) and generally look after us. They prepared a superb evening meal which was one of the best of many fine meals we had in the area and we looked forward to the occasional lunch (which were always available) of Pasta or salad. Attention to detail is the order of the day at Casa
The area is beautiful and the surrounding valley superb.
We easliy visited Florence (by train) , Sienna , Assisi , Cortona , Pienza, Montepulciano and other hill top tuscan delights.
Overall a fantastic holiday in a fantastic place

Had a few weeks to come down from our month in Italy. Magnificent with World Cup frenzy as an added bonus. Started our Tuscan holiday with ten days at Casa Portagioia. We were spoiled immediately. The property is a gorgeous oasis amid rambling Tuscan farmland. Once you find it the first time, you're OK. Terry and Marcello are the perfect hosts. Terry greets and puts you at ease upon arrival. His warmth, intelligence and humor is consistent throughout your stay. (And he helps you plan out each day, better than any tour guide.) You can't help falling in love with Marcello immediately. He caters to your every need -- and puts together a wonderful breakfast (and five star dinner once or twice a week -- don't miss it). The property is picturesque Tuscany at its best, the rooms are huge, each with unique decor consistent within a Tuscan framework. Bathrooms are large, modern and pristine. Located between Arrezo and Cortona outside Castiglione Fiorentino, the location is within an hour of all the must-sees in Tuscany and Umbria. You must have a car. Renting from AutoEurope worked fine for us. And by all means, rent a GPS device. Breakfast each morning under the outdoor umbrellas on the veranda was so spectacular that it was hard to pull ourselves away to tour. And this setting was so conducive to meeting the other guests which added to our fun and enhanced the experience. Terry and Marcello became our friends -- hopefully for a long time. They made our stay special. It was emotional saying goodbye. Needless to say, nothing afterward compared -- we will certainly visit again. (Try to spend some time relaxing by the beautiful pool overlooking the Tuscan hills -- its worth it.)
