“Reluctant to pass on this treasure!”

The village of Taganana, is situated in the Anaga, National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty with UNESCO world biosphere reserve status. If you have not visited north Tenerife, you really are missing out on the true spirit of the Canaries.

The apartment is set in the beautiful village of Taganana, which I understand translated means hilly or mountain village, a very apt description as the village is remote and remained isolated from the capital city until 1968 when a road was built, requiring an extensive tunnel through the Anaga mountains

The incredibly welcoming and friendly villagers of Taganana have relied on agriculture throughout their history, and this is still evident, terraced allotments are dotted all around the village where grape vines, banana's, corn, potatoes, and sweet potatoes abound.

Towards the edge of the village, and steeper slopes, the terraces are planted with grapevines for wine making, a long tradition that originates from the Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century, who introduced sugarcane as the mainstay of the local economy and later the vines.

Taganana, is a working village, and the apartments name "etorno rural" meaning rural surrounding reflects this; expect to hear the sounds of the countryside, cockerels, goats, dogs, the church bell at hourly intervals, giant frogs at night and very light agricultural vehicles, necessary to traverse the tiny streets of the village, The apartment is close to the only shop which is tiny, infrequently visited, but sells just about everything and the prices are often considerably less than the main tourist supermarkets in the south!!!

This apartment is very, very well equipped for self catering, incredibly clean and very comfortable. The owner was very efficient throughout the booking process and we were warmly welcomed by her sister in law, Sandra at a late hour of the night. The apartment is a perfect base, centrally placed for exploring the local area which is stunningly beautiful.

The apartamente lies in a nice surrounding next to the center of Taganana. It was nice furnished and light, we felt very well during our stay. Sandra welcomed us and explained everything though my Spanish is poor ;) all people we met in Taganana were very friendly, too. We would be pleased to come back!

“A nice flat in a beautiful location”

We wanted to stay somewhere away from the crowds on Tenerife and this apartment in Taganana fitted the bill. The best thing is the location. The village is beautiful and the people friendly. The view from the roof to which guests have access is amazing. There are plenty of walks starting either directly from the village or a short drive away, beaches not far away and some nice laurel forest just up the hill. The flat itself provided a good base thought the nice weather meant we didn't spend a great deal of time there. It would particularly suit a couple. Thanks to Ana and Sandra.

“It's the real Tenerife”

I spent 4 nights in this comfortable upgraded traditional Canarian property. Everything you need is on hand (a couple of traditional restaurants and a local food shop) and the apartment and the village ooze traditional character. No it's not the tourist hub of the south, instead it is the real Tenerife. The apartment was clean, comfortable and had everything you need to come back to after a day hiking in amazing the Anaga region.

“Fabulous friendly village location”

Great little spot. Everyone really friendly and helpful. Local shop practically next door and couple of restaurants/bars within walking distance plus more restaurants down at the beach.

Apartment clean, nicely furnished. Fabulous views from the roof terrace. Well equipped and has wifi. No parking outside but easy to park down the hill outside village hall. Can park briefly outside to load and unload so no problems.

Lovely location for walks and nearby beaches. Local beaches are surf beaches, but possible to swim if taking care.

“The real Tenerife”
Reviewed 3 March 2015 for a stay in February 2015

Spent a wonderful week here as part of a longer stay In Tenerife, and enjoyed the opportunity to try and integrate ourselves into the local community. The apartment was exactly as advertised, in the heart of the village, which has been saved from commercial development as there are no "family" beaches in the vicinity. (The nearest is 18km away, Terisitas, near San Andres). Also, the main part of the village is off the through road, and the roads are cobbled and narrow, not leading to anywhere other than the worked terraces around the village. There is a regular bus service to and from the village, but you really need a (small) car to get about. One leg longer than the other is also useful as the terrain around the village is extremely steep. Apartamento Martin- Entorno Rural is the lower half of an older village house which has been brought right up to date with all modern equipment, including a very useful WiFi connection as there are only Spanish channels on the TV. The apartment is very comfortably furnished with lounge seating for three, and a double bed in the main room, and a single in a small bedroom off the lounge, which is ideal for either an adult or child. The kitchen is well equipped for the self caterer.
Due to the nature of the narrow streets, parking for the property (other than for loading/unloading) is fifty meters away in a (free) public parking area outside the village hall.
From the apartment there are many wonderful walks which increased our fitness over the week. Try a quick run down to Playa del Tachero and back before breakfast to build up your appetite. The walk out to the west, though the vineyards of Chorro, is more gentle and very informative. Or try the longer walk over the coll to the southwest of the village, and down to tiny Afur, before taking the spectacular walk down to the sea at Playa de Tamadite, and returning back to Taganana by the coastal path, listening to the roar of the surf hundreds of feet below. (7 hours for this one.)
The weather in February in this part of Tenerife is cooler than the rest of the island, but the quality of the walking, and the friendliness of the local people more than compensated for the cloudy skies. Besides, if you really want a day on the beach (as we did on our penultimate day) you only need to drive for half an hour over the hill to be on Terisitas beach, one of the nicest and best equipped swimming beaches on the island, where the weather is always 5degrees warmer, and the sun is usually shining, as it was for us on our last full day, enabling us to top up our tan before we went home.

“Finally you can stay overnight in Taganana!”

We have been so happy to be able to stay overnight in one of our favourite places on Tenerife, the beautiful village Taganana. Ana Martins apartment is situated in the heart of the village, in a very well renovated but still very authentic house. You will find there all you need: a fully equipped kitchen, a modern bathroom, comfortable beds. Simple but with taste. There is a village grocer (if it's closed, you ask the owners of the appartment for assistance) just at the doorstep and a few very good restaurants in the viscinity. I would recommend the ones on the way to Almaciga, on the ocean shore. The reservation at Niumba is very user friendly. We've had a great time, really! Note: Taganana is a place for active people, walkers, hikers. Be prepared to drive in a very steep, narrow and sinuous streets! If you rent a car, take a small one! Otherwise, it's easy to get to Taganana on the bus and just walk to the appartment.
