Most of the hotels / b & b s in Clarens are fairly old fashioned / quaint ( depending on your point of view ) and the Protea Hotel marks itself out immediately with modern décor, lots of steel & glass. Very nice lobby / bar / restaurant area, with open fire for the colder nights.
We had booked a deluxe room, and were happy enough with it, thought they could perhaps go for something other than the basic DSTV package which is 2x channels, 4 sport channels, 1 news - it's a 4 star hotel, that could be better.
Only had a couple of breakfasts there, which were fine, very helpful cooking and waiting staff. All other meals were eaten out, as there is no shortage of places to visit in the town itself. The town main square is 50 yards up the road, all the amenities are within a 5 minute walk.
Probably didn't use all the facilities we could have, just used it as a base for visiting the town - I think the hotel is of a solid standard, but perhaps overpriced compared to other ( admittedly not as modern ) options that are available in Clarens.More
