Description: Since opening in December 2007, the restaurant has built a reputation for serving one of the best breakfasts in Clarens. Describing his recent breakfast at 278 on Main, Brendan Seery, Executive Editor, The Star said "The omelettes and cappuccinos are the equivalent of the best anywhere in the world."The breakfast menu ranges from cereal with yoghurt and honey for the not so hungry to a hearty English breakfast. On the menu throughout the day are a variety of salads comprising fresh farm produce wherever possible and mouth-watering sweet and savoury pancakes. You'll find many international favourites like toasted cheese & tomato as well as scrumptious treats served on ciabattas or toasted paninis. When the weather is chilly, a bowl of Sue's home-made soup or one of her speciality pasta dishes is always a good option. And if you're not in a hurry, the Beef & Guiness or Chicken & Mushroom pies are well worth waiting for. Or if you're simply in the mood for a sweet treat you can't go wrong with the chocolate brownies, scones and cream or freshly baked muffins.Dinner is always a culinary delight - try the vegetable spring rolls, duck liver pate with toasted ciabatta or the baked camembert with melba toast. Main course specialities include, lamb shank, melt-in-the mouth lamb curry, oxtail and stir fries. End your meal with one of Sue's outrageously decadent desserts.

“Good food and amazing service”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

We had a lovely meal in this restaurant, yet what stood out was the service. My brother cannot eat gluten, so it's usually very hard, if not impossible, to find restaurants with gluten free outside big cities in SA. Specially non-bakery places. However we always check, and we did this time. They told us they did have some, and the manager went to the kitchen and brought us the bread some minutes later. We were getting annoyed about the waiting, until we realised they had just made that bread specially for us. They even brought two different kind so we could choose. We really appreciated this kind of serving. Overall good food, nice ambiance and lovely, lovely service.

“Warm place”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

We had a nice breakfast. The place was warm, unusual this time in Clarens. It seems it has nice lunch as well.

“Good food in Clarens”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

I walked in the door not really knowing what to expect, but the initial sight that met my eye was a whimsical one. The mosaic topped tables and comfortable sofa set outside the restaurant contrasted with the warm decor and wooden furniture inside, and everything was dwarfed by the immense fireplace at one end of the restaurant. So, there I was thinking it would be a scatty cafe of sorts ... but boy was I wrong! The food is very good, with a pleasing variety on the menu. Every time I've been back, there's been new items for me to try out, and they've all been extremely good. The quality of the ingredients is top notch, and the dishes have been well constructed with a lot of thought put into the recipes. And lets not forget the desserts! You must try the Ice Cream Sandwich, if you have room left at the end of your meal. Not a cheap venue, but worth it.

“How to ruin a wonderful experience”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

We decided to have breakfast at this very nice restaurant, according to many reviews. We arrived at 09h15 and the very friendly waiter asked us where we want to sit. We chose a nice sunny spot on the cold morning. Twenty minutes later while having very nice orange juice and coffee and waiting for our breakfast, a lady arrived who was clearly the manager or day worker unpacking her bags to work for the day. She then told the waiter that the table we sat at was reserved for 10h00. "So what are we going to do about this problem? How are we going to handle this? etc, etc." It carried on for quite a while, while we could hear every word. After a while I got fed-up and asked her if she wants us to move, because she is busy ruining my breakfast. She responded no, everything was fine. At 10h05 the people came who reserved the table for a birthday breakfast. The gentleman made it very clear that this was not acceptable. I agreed. On our way out at 10h20 I went over to apologise and he obviously said it was not our fault. All of this can be avoided with a little bit of common sense. It that asking for too much??????? The food was excellent, the service great! It is a very nice restaurant considering their very good menu for lunch and dinner.

“Awesome weekend”
Reviewed 21 June 2014 via mobile

What a quaint little village Clarens is, my husband and I had a really good weekend and our stay at 278 on Main made it so. We loved our room, the staff were friendly and hospitable. Jo-Ann & Sue made us feel very welcome and totally accommodated us by providing banting friendly meals for us! Would definitely recommend the place and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again!
