“Best place in Clarens to stay at!”
Reviewed 5 May 2014 via mobile

If you are visiting Clarens and need a place to stay, look no further. Bokpoort's owners are probably the friendliest and most helpful hosts we have encountered.

Their prices is more than reasonable considering what is included. We stayed in the chalets which had heaters, electric blankets, fully equipped kitchen, nice shower and private braai. They also have camping sites.

We went for the horse riding and although it was my first time riding a horse it was very comfortable. You literally ride in the mountains so the view is spectacular. Horses is well trained and you are accompanied by staff and/or the owner on your ride.

Other facilities that you might enjoy is a big fire place/braai area that can be used by big groups of people. They also have a very nice bar area where sports can be enjoyed on the TV over a beer.

Bokpoort is about 5min drive outside of Clarens and this enables you to enjoy the night skies without too many bright lights in the surrounding area.

Other friends of mine who stayed in town complained about their accommodation and said that they will definitely rather book at Bokpoort next year.

You really won't be disappointed in you stay at Bokpoort.

We went to Bokpoort during the April holidays and were pleasantly surprized by what we got. If you are looking for the authentic cowboy experience with awesome views and amazing hospitality, this is the place to go. Its economical, and truly makes you one with nature. It takes you from the city bug's life to being in the most placid down to earth place in only 3 hours from Pta. There are horses for all riders, from novices to experienced. A Definite place to visit again.

This was an amazing ride with fantastic views, varied terrain and surrounded by wildlife. The horses are well trained & respond well. Western saddles & western trained make them easy for all abilities. A novice might be overly challenged by the terrain though. It can get pretty steep. Our groom, Dan, was sensitive to our abilities & generally asked before he speeded up. As pointed out in the previous review, the horses galloped for home, which we concur should not happen unless agreed with the riders.
We paid about US$30pp for a 2 hour ride, which we thought was excellent value. It's well off the main road (about 5km on dirt road) - about 15mins from Clarens.
Strangely you are asked to sign a waiver beforehand and then told a hard hat is optional!
Overall this is an outstanding ride in beautiful country on well-trained horses. By far the best ride we've had in South Africa.

There are so many conflicting reviews on this place. We did not stay over, I am reviewing the horseback ride. I read a very bad review on the ride whilst trying to find our way there, so I was very wary. Nevertheless we went. The road is quite rocky for about 4 km but my car made it. Use a 4x4 if you have a choice. We were 8 people on the ride and it seemed like everyone was experienced. The tack is mclaren saddles and western and the horses are trained western. The ride itself was absolutley spectacular, without doubt the most scenic I have ever done. The horses look well taken care of and are well trained. However this is definatley not a ride for a novice rider or a nervous rider, and I think that is where some of the bad reviews come from. Galloping back to the stables is a universal no no, and yet the guide took off in a flat gallop a good 200m before the end. Aldo the decents are very steep and harrowing, I was right at the back, and no one waited for me, which is dangerous. If you honestly are a confident rider, this ride is outstanding is the variety of riding and scenery, and hence my 5 stars.
