The best thing about this hotel was its proximity to the ferry to/from Faial. The room was fine, but the setting is not very good. I had a balcony but there was nothing to compel my using it and the patio chairs were dirty. The breakfast buffet was okay, but it must have been better when others were there because it was nothing so that would otherwise make me comment on it. Unfortunately the thing that displeased me the most was how unpleasant and non-customer focused both the front desk staff and especially the bartender were. I have never experienced that level of poor service in the Azores before. Fortunately it was not the typical attitude on Pico.

Hotel Caravelas was the second and final hotel we stayed in during our trip to the Azores. In fairness we were completely spoiled by our first hotel in Ponta Delgada, the Marina Atlantico. That said this hotel is fine, primarily because it is in a great location but would be improved by addressing some of the items below.

But first the positives: good breakfast, nice bathroom, very central location to all activities Madalena has to offer: whale watching, car rentals, scuba, etc.

Suggestions to fix:

AC. The rooms have AC but it barely worked. We literally had night sweats even with the sliding door wide open the second night.

English. I know Americans are notorious for not learning other languages but Portuguese is not a common language and is difficult for even a Spanish speaker (my wife) to negotiate. Having a front desk staff with a better command of the English language would be helpful.

More helpful staff. I realize this is a small hotel on a small island with no concierge but it is still a hotel that deals with foreigners who are not familiar with the language and/or customs. Pretty much all of our questions to the staff about places to see or businesses to utilize were answered somewhat hazily and as though they were too busy. Part of the service industry is faking it even when you don't want to. They could use a shot of that here.

I give this hotel a 3 rating mainly because I don't think ratings should be relative. If this hotel were in a bigger town it would warrant that rating, just because it's on a small island doesn't change matters.

Enjoy Pico, it is a lovely island!!!!

Great breakfast buffet selection especially if you sick of only eating ham and cheese, nice large pool, rooms were comfortable and updated. The room numbering system in the wings surrounding the pool were confusing. Several parties in our group doubled back the halls a few times looking for their rooms. There could have been better signage at the hall intersections. Not the nicest looking surrounding area but is convenient to get to restaurants. The ferry terminal is literally a 3 minute walk away. The bar never looked like it was open during my 2 night stay touring through the islands.

Positive:
- good bedding
- great bathroom (modern and fully equipped)
- nice breakfast buffet
- good location for visiting the island

Negative:
- ugly surrounding
- not enough parking spaces (and difficult to park in the hotel neighbourhood)
- hotel corridors look like hospital corridor
- gym facilities come directly form the 60ies (outdated)
- people at the reception are very cold

Room Tip: Even if the view is not fun, the rooms on the back side of the hotel are the quietest. The one near...

It is the only big hotel in Madalena, and as they don't have real competitors, the place is not very sympathetic.
Upon arrival nobody would ever help you with your luggage. The bell boy looks at you, but really no idea why he has a job there. I stayed at this hotel 3 times and never got any help - very, very poor for a so called 4 star hotel.
The girls and boys at the frontdesk were nice to me, I liked them. But they don't really seem very happy to have a job there. Thiago is a very nice guy, professional, helpful and with a good sense of humour.
The lobby is modern and ok. The décor of the (very small!) rooms is really nice. Vivid colours, tasteful furniture, good comfy beds. But: during all my 3 stays the minibar was out of order. It seems they want to save energy and therefore just pretend that they have to call a technician (which never appeared...). Once I was there there was no hot water at all - in a 4 star hotel :-(
Thiago was kind and offered be a key of a nearby room, so at least I could take a relaxing bath.
The terrace during all my 3 stays was not clean. Chairs were dirty and dusty. There is a lot (!!!) of noise from the port, there are constructions going on just in front of the hotel. Very unpleasant and not relaxing at all! Breakfast is very good, Azorean 4 star standard. In my opinion it is a hotel where you only sleep if you travel by boat to Horta or São Jorge. Otherwise Madalena doesn't offer anything pleasant, and there are much more charming options to stay on wonderful Pico. May be I am a very pampered and spoiled guy, I have to admit it. I always try to see the good things in life, but I really can not say that there is a big sympathy between Hotel Caravelas and me...

Room Tip: There are none, because all of them are noisy, and what you see from your window does not really car...

I stayed for 2 nights and I enjoyed. This is 3 star hotel with a good room with a nice view. You can see the other Island Faial from your room. The breakfast has a good variety of food.take my advice and rent a car to enjoy this beautiful Island. You can easy acess the sea to take a swim. The water is very clean and the temperature in this time of the year is around 17ºC.There's plenty to do if you like nature. You can whale wash. This is one of the best places in the world to see whales and dolphins. You also can see lagoons and go to the top of the mountain ( the biggest one in Portugal-2351 meters). The culture landscape of the PIco Island vineyard is a site classified by UNESCO. You can taste the wine in places called Adegas. This is the second time that I go to Pico and I pretend to go there again.

Room Tip: Reserve a rrom on the higher floor.

Good hotel in general, very confortable, cable tv, paid internet, nice bathroom, good bed, but i didn't like the fact the restaurant was only open for breakfast, at lunch time and dinner time it was closed, had to live the hotel to find a place to eat, don't know if it's a season issue or if it's a all year thing but even tough there are plenty of restaurants nearby, it's raining now, windy and the last thing i wanted was to leave the hotel for a meal,
