“Chef needs something.”
Reviewed 14 February 2014

We stayed here on a Travelzoo offer and had the tasting menu. Hotel being transformed and we upgraded to room 21 - lovely large and open but quite cold and hard to heat. Shower also not very hot but is noisy! Bed huge and very comfortable with good lights for reading.
The dining room had a great atmosphere - well spaced tables and an open fire (which we had to add logs ourselves) but the food was disappointing. I'm a big River Cafe fan (where the chef trained) but didn't recognise the cooking or the menu.
First course was mussels (my wife said she didn't eat mussels but was not offered an alternative although another table did swap!) and the shellfish were served with the worst most stale shop roll ever. The second course (pickled beetroot) was superb and one to repeat but the home-smoked salmon and the chicken were very average. The chicken (confit and hash with an egg) was actually too stodgy and unbalanced.
Sad if the chef needs motivating but the bread served at breakfast was so much better! Coffee was also very good and the brief wine list a credit too.

Booked this stay through Travelzoo for an anniversary treat and it turned out to be a good choice. We had received a complimentary upgrade to the Trowle Suite (2) for our occasion and after a warm welcome, we were guided to our room, through the milking parlour, now the restaurant with a potted history of the building along the way.The huge 4 poster bed is up a few steps onto its own mezzanine with a balustrade. I have never seen a TV on top of the wardrobe before! The room itself is furnished and decorated in a rustic way as is the restaurant and bar which is more of a cosy snug. The bar was not always manned so just a ring on the bell and someone was there. The weather was battering the building, but we were content enough sat in front of the log fire eating our 5 course taster menu. This was quite an experience, small very different courses with their own individual taste, texture and content. The sticky toffee pudding finished off a very special meal. We just relaxed in the lounge after with the log burner.
Again, the breakfast was very good with a fruit/yogurt/cereal starters and your own choice of cooked for afterwards. All you need to do is make your own toast and have as much as you want. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad, we could not look round the garden much, but there is quite an ambitious self sustainability/regeneration project starting and I would be interested in coming back to see the end result and stay again.
All the staff were friendly, happy, attentive and welcoming with nothing too much trouble. Oh by the way, the cheap runny jam mentioned previously is actually home made marmalade. Pour it on your yogurt. Lovely!!!

Room Tip: If you have a special occasion, ask if there are any suites available

The place has the lovely feel of a new adventure just beginning - all very exciting. Our 5 course taster menu was superb, really excellent cooking & we would love to come & feast again. The restaurant manager was lovely - very welcoming & knowledgeable and made time to talk to us about future plans and recipes. Reception was just as it should be too, very welcoming & friendly.
Our breakfast was also very good - no complaints here except having to choose either the full English or the lovely smoked salmon. I'm guessing the bread was homemade, it was very tasty toasted. Our waitress was smiley & helpful. Well done Team, keep up the good work, we loved our stay - thank you.

We stayed at the Old manor Hotel through a travel zoo offer. This was fab one if the best i think we have been on. The 5 course taster menu was second to none, it was lovely and the relaxed atmosphere in the hotel was excellant. All staff were helpful and could not do enough for you. I will definently be returning. we also had a upgrade, and had a room in the courtyard which was very clean and comfortable.

We stayed at the old manor hotel as part of a travel zoo offer. Upon checking in we were greeted to a warming log fire and shown to our room. The building has lots of character and is in a quaint location with plenty of parking.

We were in room 1, the Dovecotte suite, with a beautiful four poster bed and free standing bath. We paid an extra £25 each to upgrade. The bed was very comfortable and bathroom a large size.

Dinner was an interesting experience. There was only a few other tables so plenty of attention from the hardworking waiting staff. The food wasnt our normal choice (we had rabbit soup, quail egg, salmon, black pudding and goats cheese), but we went in with an open mind and enjoyed all the food. My boyfriend has a large appetite and still felt hungry afterwards but I felt very content.

Breakfast was fine, selection of cereals, toast from delicious home made bread, and cooked breakfast. Again small portions but I'm sure we could of asked for more if we wanted.

Overall a very enjoyable stay, and a memorable time.

Stayed at this lovely hotel for a second time. We stayed in Room 10 this time and it was spotlessly clean but has lost its character. The walls are cream and very stark (where have the lovely old pictures gone??) The addition of a lovely quality carpet was appreciated as was the lovely greeting by your receptionist. The beds are still so comfortable.
Now we come to the breakfast!!! Still reeling from the fact you had run out of 6X and had to go into town for hubby to sample his favourite tipple!!! We went for breakfast and what a let down.
I had written in a magazine that Matt was now smoking salmon and was about to smoke his own bacon but no it hadn't started yet!! Then the toast - now make your own and cheap white cotton wool bread - NOT GOOD. Then onto the home made marmalade - well if you call runny syrup with orange peel marmalade then this is for you. We eventually chose the cooked breakfast when it arrived it had no black pudding, did we get told the chef had run out? No it was sneaked in without a word and when we asked where it was we were told sorry we have none. Not what I was expecting from a top notch chef. Needless to say we wont be returning as we feel the hotel is now over priced for the facilities it offers. It is a shame as we loved our stay last time and praised it on Tripadvisor.

Room Tip: Rooms 9 and 10 are very comfortable

Thank you for taking the time to give u your feedback!
Sorry about the lack of paintings in the room, we have only just re-painted them and have been waiting for a non-rainy day to fit them all…..your review has given us resolve and as I sit here with the rain and wind hitting the window my wife and I are about to get them all back in the outside rooms!
Breakfast is a strange one as we have recently spent some real time upgrading the offer. We now get fresh bread delivered every day (unsliced bloomer). The cooked breakfast is made from scratch and again recently remodeled to include bubble and squeak, sausage from a local farmer, grilled tomato, bacon, beans and black pudding. It sounds like we might have run out of black pudding….i am sorry if we did.
Regarding price, since taking over the Old Manor we have actually reduced the prices we offer. Please check the special offers page on our website; you will see offers on there at amazing prices like £120 for overnight and dinner for two, that’s £60 per person!!

We went to this hotel through Travelzoo. The hotel has a new chef who has only been in position 3 months. His wife is Front of House and is full of enthusiasm and make you feel very welcome.
Our room was 'old worldy'.
We found the dinner excellent. We are very particular about our bread as we cook our own. However, the bread at breakfast was delicious - too good to toast!

Room Tip: We were actually in the hotel but they have 'bungalows' as well,.
