“Great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2009

I have used this hotel many times for friends, family and corporate outings. It has only 7 rooms, more a guest house than a hotel. Food is excellent, and spans both Indian, Bengali, and Indian Chinese (a splendid cuisine in itself).

I once rented the entire hotel to take my India team for a weekend on a corporate retreat.

I have also taken groups of friends / family there.

The hotel arranges for excellent Baul musicians to come and perform upon request. Bauls are folk singers in saffron robes who sing a specific form of Bengali folk music. Shantiniketan and surroundings are famous for these itinerant musicians.

For Rabindrasangeet aficionados, the hotel can also arrange performances upon request.

Things to do in and around Shantiniketan include visiting local Santhal (tribal) villages like Goalpara and Majhipara, or artisans in Sriniketan. Villages like Kamalakantapur offer beautiful landscape, and a quintessential rural Bengal feel.

During Basanta Utsav (festival of spring and colours) in the Spring and Poush Mela in the winter, cultural events abound in Shantiniketan. Notable among those is the Christmas celebration at the Brahmo Mandir inside the Biswabharati campus, and of course, the famous music-dance-colour display of the spring festival.

For those interested in nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore and his legacy, a must-visit is the Uttarayan complex where Tagore lived. The Subarnarekha bookstore, not far from Bnashori, is also a great place to find books or Tagore's poetry, novels, short stories, etc. as well as Bengali music of various genres, especially Rabindrasangeet.

A popular local hang-out is right across from Bnashori. A cup of tea at Nabadwip's sweet shop (Nabadwiper dokan) will give you a flavor of local adda (chatting session).

The Kopai river is a good picnic spot, with the Kankalitala temple not far.

A good lunch outing is to the Banalakkhi farm house where classical Bengali cuisine is served. A store with great chutneys and other local goodies is a fun spot to explore.

The pricing is very reasonable at around $20 a night, which makes it possible to rent the whole place for under $150 a night.
