“Comfortable and homely”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

i visited shantiniketan in April 2014 and booked the rest house after reading the reviews and i was not disappointed. in fact i found them to be extremely fair. i had booked a CP plan in advance and since it was off season, they themselves informed me about a revision in their rates and made it a MAP plan on their own. the staff were courteous and helpful, the place was neat and clean. however, being vegetarians, the food choice was limited. my aim of rest and relaxation was fulfilled and the staff was very helpful with guiding about local attractions. over all a comfortable stay and i would definitely stay there again, if i visit again.

Room Tip: i got room no 6, excellent view - one of their best rooms

We had stayed there during weekdays & the whole property was vacant. It filled up during the weekend. The room 6 has a very good view of the garden & the front portico. The first floor balcony is fabulous & late into evening we played some Rabindra sangeet & the environment was surreal. The food in the lunch room was very well prepared & tasty. The portions were very good. The staff was homely & took good care of us. The free wifi connectivity was helpful too. Please take a morning walk on the red road till Prantik station & you will feel refreshed. Many go to far off Bonolakshmi to taste authentic organic food...while that is quite good, the food at RTDR is no less worthy of its salt. Overall, RTDR is highly recommended to all travellers to Gurudev's land.

Room Tip: We stayed at Room 6, good view of the garden & front portico.

To spend the puja weekend quietly and away from the city, me and my wife decided to visit shantiniketan where the Durga Puja is celebrated among santhals with great spirit and colourful display of culture in art and dance forms. We had also heard about some of the the century old ‘Rajbari pujas’ in the nearby villages where the old world charm of goddess worshiping is well preserved and celebrated traditionally. This was not our first visit to Shantiniketan as we had came here twice before and stayed in Santiniketan Tourist Lodge and Mark & Meadows which are located on the Jmboni side (south end of Viswabharati Campus) and much bigger properties and are much closer to the Viswabharati Main Campus. But, this time since we were planning to explore the surroundings of Bolpur we both agrred to explore a new property and preferably a home stay, a little away from the main Bolpur town. And when surfing through net, the name ‘Rater Tara Diner Robi’ struck us simply because of the poetic rhythm in the name. We explored further and surprisingly saw overwhelming reviews in the Trip Advisor although the name was never quite familiar to us. We trusted the Trip Advisor’s great reputation and almost blindly zeroed down on it.
We arrived at the station on the morning of Saptami where an irritating traffic jam greeted us in the station road and we almost started cursing each other for our choice since it was the time of Mr. President’s homecoming to his native village nearby Bolpur. It was a hot and humid late summer day and the bazars along the station road was booming with crowd and seemed like there were no escape from the chaos even in ‘shanti’-niketan. Along the way we crossed the Main Viswabharati campus and the ‘Mayurakshi’ irrigation canal and entered in the lately semi-developed ‘Sonajhuri’ area. With the urbanscape gradually giving away to plantations and cool breeze we instantly felt relieved and happy for our choice but more was still waiting. We first noticed the unusually large garden for a small residential building which has been converted to the guest house. We entered to our room doubtful of our choice since there seemed to be no other lodgers staying there at that moment. We were tired of the long travel and very hungry as well. The amazingly simple but tasty food greeted us and we savoured it with immense satisfaction. There were framed certificate of excellence from Trip Adviser, pictures of Tagore and large reproductions of renaissance painters. These together with the well maintained garden and neatly served food gave a good impression of the owner of the property. We met him the day after and he lived up to the impression and more. The respectable Mr.Brojeswar Banerjee made us feel at home with his easy personality and pleasant charm. Ranjit da drove us to some of the artistic and traditional pujas and the experience was a new and enriching one for us. We also got acquainted with young by heart elderly couple and spent the evenings in the dimly lit veranda listening to their stock of ghost stories, one of them even incidental to a nearby hotel which made my wife maintaining a distance from that part of the town. Mr. Banerjee had gifted us a brilliant and artistic Tagore portrait which much like our trip was beautifully framed!

Room Tip: The room on the first floor which faces the lounge area is most spacious but if privacy is an issue...

Its a guesthouse rather than ahotel, well maintained, well furnished and strategically located away fromm rush of the market area. Its landscape is one of the best I have ever seen, specially in the winter with so much colourful flowers. Although rooms could be a bit larger, but those are furnished with all modern amenities.Food is excellent specially for those who wish to taste classical bengali foods.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the garden and balcony (sitting area) in the first floor. Backside rooms are new...

We had been there during last week of December 2013 at the time Poushmela at stayed there for 3 days. We booked 3 rooms. All rooms were not good. Ground floor rooms should be avoided. The best rooms are on the 1st floor facing the garden. However the food was excellent and sumptuous particularly if you are a Bengali. The staffs were all very nice and helpful. Some times the service is slow when the guest house is packed. The beautiful flower garden in front and kitchen gardedn at the back side is a great plus point for this guest house. Overall an enjoyable stay

Room Tip: Go for the 1st floor roooms facing garden

B B, Owner at Rater Tara Diner Rabi Guest House, responded to this review, 4 April 2014
We are having 11 rooms, all rooms are with ac, attached western toilets with required fittings, CTV in each room with cable connection, we provide good linen with required mattresses and pillows like regular hotels, during winter geyser connection also provided, everyday we clean rooms and toilets if not otherwise instructed by the guest as some guests does not like to open their room in their absence. We are not having room services as foods we generally distributed in our well decorated dining hall and we don't allow drinking alcohol either in open area or in dining hall as we don't have liquor licence. We don't understand beside above what else basic amenities are required by our guests. We know as we don't allow drink outside the rooms, it creates dissatisfaction among few of our guests where we are totally undone as policy and we may be excused for that. We provide free WiFi connection through BSNL and seldom we faced problem not having link, where we can't do any help to our guests. Regarding food, we provide only Bengali Cuisine, which is well publicised and we always advice our guests that if they prefer otherwise, they may drop the plan to stay at our guest house. Lastly, our guest house is situated on the main road and it is well accessible to other areas and very near to Prantik Railway Station and Santiniketan main compound. We feel, somewhere some thing happened that's why our esteem guest opined otherwise, we always believe " Athithi devo bhavo".
