“Nice hotel, good breakfast but uninspiring bar food”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Just a quick review. Spent a night here recently whilst away on business.

Lovely place, very attractive setting. Inside the hotel is a bit of a maze, and I couldn't recommend it for someone who has difficulty walking, as the rooms are hard to get to.
Very good, well-equipped gym and exercise area.
Nice sports bar, but poor range of drinks (no real ale) and an uninspiring selection of bar meals. Service was good, however, from friendly staff.
Very nice rooms, and although the room was a little warm on the night I stayed, I did sleep well, which is unusual for me.
Good brekfast.

This was our 5th stay at Dalmahoy, not that I was counting, but the lovely welcome note in our room along with a miniature of Dalmahoy Single Malt whisky told us that so!

Once again, from beginning to end the stay was outstanding. After being upgraded to a Junior Turret Suite on our 2nd stay (clever move Marriott!) we have booked into one ever since for our annual trip. We now have 2 girls and they love their own area of the room (they sleep on the double sofa bed in the turret!) as well as the enormous bathroom and our huge bed too. I love that the windows open enough to allow fresh air into the room as it can get hot. Also, the blackout curtains do an excellent job.

Check-in was fantastic with the new Marriott rewards app - we checked in on our way to the hotel and were easily whisked to our room immediately on arrival.

Breakfast was delicious, hot, plentiful and even with a full hotel we didn't have to wait to be seated or to get any items. Our request for soya milk was dealt with quickly and effortlessly.

The swimming pool and changing areas were spotless and warm enough to get myself and a 5 year old and 2 year old changed without any of us being cold.

Check out was just as easy as check in especially as the bill is put under your door during your last night so you have the chance to review it at your leisure before heading to reception.

Once again, thank you Marriott Dalmahoy. We will be back!

Room Tip: If you can, go for a junior turret suite - it's huge!

I traveled with my friend to Edinburgh this summer and we decided to stay 1 night out of Edinburgh so we chose Dalmahoy for a different hotel experience in a country mansion. Hotel is actually a golf club so naturally there is huge lawn attached to the hotel. If you get nice weather it will be a great stay to even just take a walk around. The other feature we really love is the ground floor bar. For us tourists, this is just what we want to see in UK - club style bar. Fireplace, armchairs these are all adding to the atmosphere. We got a table just beside the window and we spent a lovely night expecting the late sunset with nice wiskey and cocktails. I would consider coming back for sure.

Excellent treatment by the staff, friendly, helpful, smiling. Our room was clean and comfortable, got a great sleep, in a really comfy warm bed. We had ice to chill our drinks, the leisure club on site not to mention breakfast which was a vast choice of fruit, fruit juice, cereal and of course full Scottish breakfast, with toast/coffee. Left feeling relaxed. Just booked our next visit.

Stayed at the Dalmahoy with my daughter for a special treat.
We were warmly welcomed by a cheery Ronnie- full of Scottish charm.
Reception staff very friendly and efficient.
The décor is perfect for this grand hotel adding to the lovely atmosphere.
We were lucky enough to stay in a suit 'Lady Mary'- luxurious, stylish with beautiful views.
The bed? My daughter and I both agreed it was like sleeping on a cloud!
Absolutely spotless.
Dinned in the Pentland- staff were on their game, especially Natalia advising us on the new menu. The food was delicious.
Over all what stood out to me about the hotel was the staff-exceptional, friendly and helpful.
A delightful experience, loved it!

Myself, partner and daughter stayed here for 3 nights in July 2014. Having stayed at other UK Marriotts, including the exceptional Marriott Worsley we had certain expectations. Sadly the Dalmahoy failed in some key areas.

The setting is attractive, surrounded by the green of the golf course. The original building comprising the Reception area, the Cocktail Bar and the Pentland Restaurant are tastefully decorated and what you would expect of a Scottish country house. The rest of the hotel is an extension and as others have said, you may find you have a long and convoluted walk to your room through a maze of corridors. Reception staff are professional and efficient.

The Room
This was of average size with two double beds. Positives are the beds are comfortable, with the fantastic Marriott pillows. The fridge and flat screen TV were good, there was a fan in the room, a heated towel rail (always useful in Winter) and the soundproofing between the door and the corridor was also good. The negatives are numerous: the bathroom wasn’t completely clean (no excuse for this as Alex Polizzi says!); the shower pressure was poor and the temperature constantly changes; the sound proofing between rooms is non-existent: you can hear every word of a normal conversation; there is no air conditioning. WiFi is chargeable in the rooms - at a scandalous price. If it’s free in the public areas, why isn’t it free in the rooms?

The quality of food was variable during the 3 breakfasts we had (particularly the scrambled eggs). Staff brought hot drinks to the table quickly and the blueberry muffins were very light and fresh. On our last morning the fresh fruit salad smelt awful, the waitress duly removed it from the buffet, but why had it been put out in the first place? Why wasn’t it checked? Variety was not as good as other Marriotts, and you can certainly find a better and cheaper breakfast at a Premier Inn. On two mornings we were told we couldn’t sit where we wanted to because of a coach party, the clear message here is ‘your custom isn’t as important’ - terrible customer service.

James Braid Bar
Service and staff here is good. It’s a good sized, airy room. The food was just OK, not a generous amount of tuna in a sandwich, and the side salad was mostly raw onion. £6 for a glass of wine, £4 for a pint.

Again, a lovely light airy restaurant with comfortable furnishings. The problem here were the bones (lots) in both the adult fish and chips and the child’s fish fingers. The waitress did the right thing by apologising, removing the food, returning with chicken nuggets and waiving the cost - the suppliers were blamed for the problem. But, again, where were the checks in the kitchen? This food should not have been served in the first place.

Leisure Facilities
This is where this hotel excels. The pool is large, with a glass roof - stunning design. The steam room and sauna are excellent. The changing rooms are large and of exceptional quality. The gym is a good size with an array of equipment, however the hotel needs to consider a cooling system in here as a matter of urgency - it was way too hot considering its purpose.

Overall, at a £175 per night, we were disappointed - we did not get value for money. There are clearly some issues in the kitchens that require urgent addressing. Because of the food problems we decided not to risk the Pentland for dinner, which we had been looking forward to. It seems that this hotel has become a Cash Cow for Marriott due to the golfers and coach parties - and anyone else doesn’t matter. We would choose somewhere else next time in the hope that our custom was of more value.

First of all, let me thank you for your feedback. Genuinely. We do read your reviews and we do care what you say. Let me assure you that we will act upon it and try to make improvements where we can. For example some of your points regarding the quality of food in certain areas are easily fixed and we will share that feedback accordingly, hopefully you can see from other reviews that many other people have had an excellent experience so please be assured that your experience is not the norm. Other issues such as Air Conditioning (very rarely needed in Scotland) and the layout of the building we can't fix so easily, however most guests appreciate that we are not a high rise hotel and appreciate that you will walk a little farther as a result. Can I please assure you that we certainly do not prioritise certain guests over others, so I can only apologise if that's how it appeared, it is absolutely not our intention. We appreciate your business and your feedback and hope to welcome you back to Dalmahoy one day

We stayed here recently for one night only. The hotel is located in the middle of a golf course. The gardens around the actual hotel were beautifully laid out and well kept. The staff on the reception were welcoming and very helpful and polite. The room we had was on the ground floor which I thought would be noisy but it was blissfully quiet .The room was well appointed and had everything we needed, the twin beds were comfortable and the bathroom was spacious in comparison to some we have stayed in. We ate in the Zest restaurant which is above the leisure facilities. The food was simple but quick and tasty and there is a bar up there too. We had breakfast in the main dining room which overlooks the grounds and golf course. The breakfast was excellent so much to choose from either off a buffet or you could order from the chef who was cooking in the area. The check out was quick and efficient and its location i.e near the Edinburgh bypass gets you on the routes away from the area very quickly.
Be aware they seem to have a few coach parties using this hotel so recommend you time any meals around their arrival/departures. We would definitely stay here again.
