Stayed herewith another couple for a 2 day visit to the fringe at Edinburgh.
It is a really lovely country house and run by a really pleasant couple, who were a great help for our stay.
It is a quirky type of place, paintings every where and antique type items everywhere and very nice family photos scattered around, and very much like you are staying in some ones home rather than renting a room, which is not uncomfortable because of the friendliness of Jill and her husband.

It's true there are no locks on the room doors which did not bother us, and I think Jill might have known we may be late, as on our late return the curtains were drawn and the heater had been put on low, which was appreciated after such a terrible journey home after the tattoo.
The grounds are lovely and nice for a walk around before breakfast.

We had 2 good nights sleep and the breakfast was good and relaxed.
We used the train to access Edinburgh which was fine and reliable. One tip, DO NOT go to the second tattoo performance as there are no trains ( rail company you should think this one through really !!!!!!! and at that time getting a taxi was impossible, after trying till 2.30ish we finally threw ourselves in front of one on the road. We were ripped off (shame on you driver !!!! £40 instead of £25, but we were desperate to get home so would have paid anything ) so if you are staying at highfield go to the first performance and you will be able to get a train back.

All in all glad we tried such a pleasant place to stay, a change from the hotels in the city and typical sterile type establishments, and great value for money. The hospitality was fantastic and appreciated.

The fringe is fantastic and edinburgh in August should be on everyone's tick list !!,!,
Highfield is definitely worth a try if you prefer to be out of it a bit.

This bed and breakfast is ideal if you bring your dog, lovely grounds to walk in and a small woodland walk just outside the boundary of the house. We had planned a trip to Edinburgh Zoo with a visit to the Royal Yacht Brittania the following day. On both days the weather was scorching, however, we were allowed to leave the dog at the B&B. it would have been much too warm to leave the dog in the car. Breakfast each morning was fine although there was little choice apart from bacon and eggs etc. The double bed was huge with lovely pillows and quality duvet, complimentary tea and coffee was also provided in the room.
The train station is within a short walking distance for trains to Edinburgh which takes about twenty minutes and run every hour.
For our evening meal, on the recommendation of the owner at Highfield House, we went to the Bridge Inn, about ten minutes away. What a fantastic experience of wonderful food alongside the canal.
The down side of Highfield House was the inability to lock your bedroom door, and lack of any fire drill instructions or fire alarms in the bedroom.

We stayed here twice, either side of a week's holiday further north in Scotland. The prioprieter, Jill, was good enough to let us keep the house key since she was goin to be out on our return trip and was good enough to phone us on our journey to make sure we were OK.

The two rooms we had were very large (though with very small TVs that were almost a dot on the horizon!!) and tastefully furnished and very comfortable.

We found the lack of room keys rather disconcerting, especially when coming back on the second day to find all our doors open (no doubt to air them). Maybe we are just paranoid southerners, but we (and some fellow guests on the second visit) found it a little off-putting, as one would expect the ability to secure one's possessions.

Kirknewton is a bit on the small and quiet side, so scoring the location is a matter of taste. We loved the quiet surroundings and had a car to visit a local restaurant, but some others might find the location a little lacking in facilities.

We booked via expedia and this resulted in Jill not being aware that we were bringing our dog, even though we had stated it in the expedia booking. Dogs are most welcome here but we were not aware that there is normally an additional charge for dogs, which was not obvious when booking with expedia. Becuase of this, Jill waived the additional fee but one should clarify booking details with the property directly to avoid such confusion.

Room Tip: At least one room has its own, separate bathroom on your "own" short corridor (with unlock...

My wife, teen-age daughter and I stayed here for three nights during a 9-day trip to Ireland, Wales and Scotland. This was the highlight. What can we say? Jill, the proprietor, was very, very friendly. It's a beautiful manor home in a suburb of Edinburgh. Well-kept gardens on a hill overlooking the valley. We stayed in a very large master bedroom and our daughter stayed in a room down the hall. We liked how Jill prepared the breakfasts -- the eggs on flatbread, for example. She told us all about the history of the place -- the front of the house is 19th century, the back 18th century. Look at the family portraits in the dining room -- all of her and her husband's ancestors. You have got to stay here. You need a car and there is not much in Kirknewton, unless you like Turkish take-away just a 15-minute walk from Highfield House (kebabs and chips which we liked). You are only a 15-minute drive from Hermiston park-and-ride so you can leave your car and take the bus to Edinburgh city centre. This was an amazing place and we can't recommend it too much.

Unfortunately we had to sneak out early to catch our plane, but our hostess was nice enough to leave juice, yogurt, and cereal for us).
A lovely house with a beautiful large garden. Quiet and secluded. Comfortable and warm with a wonderful hot shower.
Not much for eating within walking distance (not the B&Bs fault, of course. Just a heads up).
Wish we could have stayed longer.

This B&B is in a quiet location but has the Kirknewton train station just a few minutes walk away. The owners were helpful, knowledgeable and accomodating. They let us keep the car parked after checkout when we went to Edinburgh for the day. Our breakfast was tasty and filling. It rained for our visit so we didn't use the tennis court or gardens/lawns, etc. Other guests were very quiet so everyone can sleep well.

Room Tip: Some have ensuite baths. Ours was in the hall but private just for us.

My wife and I arrived late Thursday afternoon and were made very welcome by Jill, the owner.
The setting is marvelous, the house set in its own grounds(which we were free to explore),affording you all the privacy you would want while still being only minutes from the village centre and the rail station and main roads.
Breakfast is served in a wonderful old dining room and was well cooked and presented with a great choice of everything from fruit through to a traditional Scottish cooked breakfast.
The bedroom was luxury itself with old fashioned linen bed sheets and a mattress you could disappear in.!
We also had the complete freedom of the the house and appreciated the trust placed in us to do what we wanted to and go as we please.
