Andechs is a functioning monastery and brewery, and has been a pilgrimage destination since the 15th century. It is famous for housing many important Catholic relics including some of Charles the Great. It is about an hour outside of Munich but worth the drive.
The beer is really good, and the food offered traditional beer hall fare. A short walk up the hill brings you to the chapel. The chapel is a beautiful baroque masterpiece, and the Benedictine services here are very traditional and pious. Many still make the pilgrimage to the church on foot.
The church itself is reason enough to visit. If you want to see the relics you must make arrangements and be able to understand the German narration.
During the summer this place is packed, but if you can visit I personally highly recommend it.
