This is a favourite spot among the local people, especially during the time of Lent before Easter. The walk from the S-Bahn (Herrsching) is very beautiful and tranquil and as a reward you can enjoy the wonderful food and beer (Doppelbock) at the monastery.

This is a great little church, monastery, and brewery in the countryside about 45 minutes from Munich on the S-Bahn. The setting is serene and peaceful, the church is colorful and beautiful, and the beer made here is some of the best in all of Germany.

This is supposedly the oldest operating church in Germany and that is saying alot. The cathedral is beautiful. The restaurant serves great food and even better doppelbock. The Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel is now exported to the United States. it is one of the best in Germany.
The cathedral sits on top of a hill overlooking Lake Ammersee. It is a beautiful setting. A nearby town of Freiding has a bed and breakfast that serves Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel on draft. What a beautiful setting in a picturesque area. I went for a jog in the morning and there were cows walking across the road. If you want a few days of total peace and quiet, come here.

Andechs is a functioning monastery and brewery, and has been a pilgrimage destination since the 15th century. It is famous for housing many important Catholic relics including some of Charles the Great. It is about an hour outside of Munich but worth the drive.

The beer is really good, and the food offered traditional beer hall fare. A short walk up the hill brings you to the chapel. The chapel is a beautiful baroque masterpiece, and the Benedictine services here are very traditional and pious. Many still make the pilgrimage to the church on foot.

The church itself is reason enough to visit. If you want to see the relics you must make arrangements and be able to understand the German narration.

During the summer this place is packed, but if you can visit I personally highly recommend it.

It's a bit of a way away with the S-bahn to Herrsching, but a nice walk to the Monastery and the beer is great. They have really good food there too, so come hungry! They have an outside area beergarden which is lovely (if weather permits).
