“The Perfect French Getaway for Couples or Families”
Reviewed 19 August 2012 for a stay in August 2012

After a full-on week in North Wales my wife, 2 children (ages 12 and 16) and I drove down to Charente for the second week of our summer holiday with the aim of re-charging the batteries in what we hoped was a 1st class gite. We weren't disappointed.
After a long drive we were warmly greeted by the owners' daughter, Olivia, and shown around our spacious apartment. Although the kitchen is on the cosy side, it is packed with equipment, including the obligatory dishwasher. There was also a stock of basics waiting for us in the fridge (wine, water, cheese, butter, milk etc) which was a nice touch, and very welcome.
The rest of the apartment was huge, and in my opinion the pictures on the website don't do justice to the size of the accommodation.
Les and Christine, the owners, arrived while we were unpacking and immediately popped over to welcome us personally and offer any help. They live in the apartment adjoining the holiday let and are always available if required and more than happy to offer tips on where to visit and even to provide the means to wash the car when required (those French bugs do make a mess of a windscreen after 500 miles!). On the Monday night they hosted a drinks party for us and the guests in the other 2 holiday lets (an Irish couple and 3 generations of an American family) which was a really nice way to get us all chatting.
The 3 units share a lovely pool (with safety alarm), a field with badminton net, various seating areas, 3 barbeques, a beautiful shared garden and a table tennis table. Our apartment was right by the pool and TT table and boasted 2 nice alfresco dining areas, a balcony, plenty of shade and, of course, sun loungers. It was perfect for us to alternate between reading, sun bathing, ping-pong, swimming and consuming (!!) whilst being able to keep an eye on the kids.
There are 4 or 5 quite deep steps up from road level to the pool area and the apartment so people with very young children, or people for whom steps are a problem should be aware of that.
As I said, our primary aim was to relax but there's plenty to do within a short drive although we, personally, only ventured into the town of Cognac and to the Atlantic at Royan. There's a great supermarket (Super U) at nearby Chateauneuf where the staff were very friendly.
It's worth noting that this area of France has its own micro-climate and the temperatures are similar to those further south (around 39 degrees on our last day) so you can get the sun without such a long drive and the additional rental costs of gites on the med. Worth noting.
Many of the items within the apartment are Les and Christine's from their home in England and this lends a real personal touch.
All in all, I would sum up as follows:
Our hosts couldn't have been more friendly, welcoming or helpful.
The accommodation was big, clean, bright and very well equipped (and had British Freesat TV which was a must for my son).
The area was beautiful with mile after mile of vineyard and sunflower fields.
Easily 10/10!

“Fabulous apartment, highly recommended, great decor and fantastic hosts”
Reviewed 27 February 2012 for a stay in February 2012

We stayed in the Appartement de Ruisseau February for a property hunting trip and all was absolutely excellent. The furnishing and decor in the extremely well equipped apartment was faultless. Les and Christine are perfect hosts and they went out of their way to make sure that we were comfortable and cosy during our off season stay. We were looking for a perect base to explore the Charente and we found it! We will definitely be back and we will look forward to sampling the delights of the lovely pool and gardens when we come in the summer. The standard of accommodation is second to none, and we highly recommend this excellent gite, surrounding complex and fabulous hosts to anyone looking for a holiday in the Charente.

“Very well-appointed gite in beautiful, peaceful surroundings”
Reviewed 19 February 2012 for a stay in August 2010

We have stayed in many gites and this is by far one of the best. Too often in France, the accommodation can be dark, dingy and old-fashioned. These gites have been sympathetically refurbished offering light, airy, v clean and comfortable accommodation with all mod cons. The pool area is beautiful and the surrounding countryside stunning. The delightful owners are on-hand to offer advice on places of interest to vist but are certainly not over-bearing. If you are looking for a relaxing, peaceful holiday then this is perfect.
