Just back from climbing trip to Cogne. Stayed at La Barme for the first time. Really great wee hotel. Half board with good continetal breakfast and a decent evening meal. Limited choice at dinner but food good and plenty of it. Nice wee bar to chat and read guidebooks. Rooms comfortable (if a bit hot) and decent drying room. Will return for sure.

We have gone to La Barme five years in a row for our ski holiday and I wrote an enthusiastic review about our first visit in 2010, but since it's now buried beneath other reviews I thought I should update it. Actually, I don't have much to update since this place is as good as ever. Cogne is a pleasant sizable village at 1,500 meters altitude with plenty of restaurants and hotels, and excellent cross country skiing. There's a also a small downhill area and a very good ski school. We chose the area because it's low key, we could cross country ski, and our daughter could learn both downhill and xcountry. Valnontey, where La Barme is, is a cluster of around a dozen buildings about 3 km away and about 100 meters higher. It's set in extraordinary mountain scenery with cross country trails leaving from in front of the hotel. It's not luxury - the rooms are simple - but everything is well thought out, spotlessly clean, and the family that runs it are so welcoming. They speak Italian, French and English. Breakfast is a healthy spread of cereals, breads, yogurts and fruit. Dinner changes every night, was always good, and they can make special dishes for children or if you can't eat what's on offer (the dinner menu is pinned up early every morning). There's a large common area where people gather in the evening to chat and drink, and where kids could play or watch TV. There's free wifi. I'd just make one warning: this isn't a place for sleeping in. Almost everyone either had children or was there to take part in the valley's other great specialty, ice climbing, which requires an early start. By 22h30 most people are in bed, and by 8h the next morning everyone is up and about. Most of the guests are Italian or French, but over the years we've met Germans, British, Norwegians, Canadians, Bahrainis, Israelis, and Japanese. Yes, people from Norway and Japan come here to climb frozen waterfalls. It's that special a place.

This was my second visit and I am able to report that staff remain as friendly and hardworking as ever. It's a delightful, comfortable base that yields easy access to many ice falls and cross country ski tracks. It's a great place to be.

This was my second stay at H La Barme and it remains a superb comfortable spot to be based for a winter sports holiday. Ice climbing and X-C skiing from the door. Friendly, welcoming and helpful staff within the door.

If you are into ice climbing then you probably already know about this place. It is brilliant. If you are not into winter sports then you can still expect an attentive and great service. For summer hiking or enjoying nature this is a great spot.
The staff are really wonderful - they looked after my vegetarian friends with care and consideration. The place is clean and friendly and run by a family.

Needed somewhere close to the ice climbing in the two valleys that run out from cogne. The place is owned and run by two brothers and their families. Very friendly, speak excellent English (and german, french and italian) We needed an early breakfast each day and they left out everything we needed. Big car park by the road,a garage if you need it. We went half board and had a good three course meal each night. The room was nice and had a good bathroom. Cogne is a 5 minute drive away. Lillaz another ten minutes. You can walk to all of the ice climbs in the Valnontey valley from the hotel. Good sauna at the end of the day. The jacuzzi could do to be a bit warmer and the drying room is ok but would benefit from a de-humidifier. Winter tyres on the hire car were a life saver. Plan on staying here again next time in Cogne.

I was part of a group that enjoyed a one week half-board stay at the hotel. It is a comfortable hotel with a delightful ambience. For me, the most important thing was the staff. They are brilliant. They are friendly, and nothing is too much for them. I would gladly return.
