we booked a fourth visit to this hotel with Thomsons, but 2 weeks before we were due to fly they emailed us to say they were no longer supporting this hotel. To say we were gutted would be an understatement. We love this hotel the peace and tranquility we found will be hard to match.
We will be returning later this year with another company and hope that the Utopia is not ubduly affected by Thomsons knee jerk decision because of a few complaints about the all inclusive offer.

I find any bad reports on this fabulous hotel unbelievable! The hotel itself is finished to a very high standard, the food was beautiful (Greek, obviously!) with a wonderful selection at breakfast, lunch and evening meal. I agree with a previous comment that snacks would have been pointless as there was such a selection at meal-times and always plentiful. The staff are the real jewel in the crown at the Utopia and couldn't be more friendly and attentive (special thanks to Christos, the Manager). My husband wasn't very well for a few days and they couldn't have been more concerned or helpful. The lack of communication between the hotel owner and Thomson was the only fly in the ointment ~ free bar stopping at 9.30 ~ but this didn't detract from a truly wonderful holiday. The Spa looks really something too, tho didn't actually try it. Apparently "certain people" come in by helicopter to use the Utopia spa as it is so well-known around the island. There is absolutely nothing to complain about at this beautiful hotel. Katelios itself is a very quiet fishing village ~ ideal if you really want a "chill-out" holiday. If you want a real Greek relaxing holiday, this hotel is the one for you!

Room Tip: Room overlooking pool with a sea view very good.

My fiance and I returned yesterday from two weeks at this lovely hotel and were shocked and dissapointed at the awful reviews it has been given. Yes the all inclusive promised to us was not available when we arrived, however, this is Thomsons fault and not the hotels. Subsequently Thomson compensated guests, adequetly, for this.

The Rooms: These are simply lovely. We had a queen size bed with a lovely sea view. A balcony outside with railings that WERE NOT loose and offered a stunning view. The mattress was a little hard for my partner but was perfect for me. If it was softer no doubt you would find those complaining of that too. The locks on the doors secured entry from the outside but allowed those inside a quick exit by pulling down sharply on the handle in case of a fire. The door DID NOT rattle. It was cushioned so that it did not slam when closing. There were only two news channels available to watch, however, I didn't go on holiday to watch TV. Catch up on the soaps when you get home would be my advice. The room was cleaned daily and always to a very high standard. The bathroom was lovely and I cant fault it. We also had hot water. Sometimes plumbing can go wrong, just like it does at home, Im sure the helpful staff would address this issue immidiatley if it was the case.

The Hotel: Beauitiful! This is a small hotel. Only sixty rooms and the pool area was imacculate. The area was cleaned every morning and there were ample sun beds available. Inside the lobby was spacious and decorated beautifully. Its location was perfect and it was a short walk to the idyllic harbour village of Katelios. There was only one resteraunt. Thomson stated otherwise but this was again their fault for making such a hash of the brochure information. However, we had a lovely breakfast with cooked/uncooked options available. Lunch and dinner was also to a high standard with plenty to cater for all tastes! We NEVER went hungry and would not have managed burger, chips etc etc in between these meals. Yes there was only cake and yes you had to pay for the Ice Creams but you wouldn't have stopped eating had this not been the case. Larger hotels put on a larger spread. Do this at the Utopia and food would have been wasted. The selection was catered perfectly towards the needs of the customers.

The Utopia is all about relaxing and that is exactly what it provides. We had two weeks of peace and quiet with good food and were catered by friendly and polite staff. Honestly, people should stop and think before criticising so blantly. It is not constructive and also do not review this hotel unless you have been there.

Whilst recognising all the other reviews I have now had my holiday cancelled by Thomson to Utopia and have had to over pay to stay in Katelios (my favourite quiet resort) whilst I understand that Thomson did not represent the inclusive deal appropriately my husband and I had a lovely time there a year or so ago when the hotel was not inclusive and I was more than happy with hotel. Katelios is a lovely village and to be honest those who seek constantly all inclusive deals are killing the bars and restaurants within the village, I am now more than bitterly disappointed to not be going to Utopia & disappointed with Thompson in their knee jerk reaction, rather than removing the all inclusive deal and offering customers varying options still at utopia....A very sad lady.

Returned on Tuesday after a lovely week at the Utopia in Katelios. We agree with comments made by Sandy053 & LynnS & believe that Thomson have misrepresented the facilities & all inclusive offer at the Utopia Hotel in their blurb. However, although the all inclusive drinks finished at 9.30 pm, beer, wine, tea, coffee, water & soft drinks were available until then. It is a beautiful hotel, the manager & staff are helpful & friendly, it is very clean & we enjoyed the Greek food at the hotel. We paid extra for a sea view & were pleased that we had - having read previous reviews before booking we did this as we did not want to risk having a room in the centre of the hotel with no view. It seems the sea view rooms have showers rather than baths which was fine. We would return to the Utopia but actually go bed & breakfast to enable us to enjoy the local tavernas. I hope the negative comments do not put people off staying at the Utopia as it really is lovely.

Thomson Holidays have totally misrepresented the expectation of an all inclusive holiday at this hotel. There were 3 restaurants specified - there is only one - and all inclusive until 11.00pm in the brochure. No snack bar and nothing to drink after 9.30pm unless you paid for it. No bathrobes, no working 'phone in the room, no fire instructions, toiletries supplied only on first day, no mini bar, no information books in the room or on the Thomson desk. However, "Greek Food" was specified and this was entirely true and we enjoyed it and had no complaints. We weren't expecting or indeed wanted burger and chips!! We didn't use the spa but were taken on a tour - it was open and looked amazing. We found the staff on reception and indeed throughout the hotel very helpful and pleasant. The problems with Thomson were not of their making and they coped well with any complaints within their constraints.

The hotel and pools were lovely. The nicest part was not having to "reserve a sunbed". They were plentiful and well spaced. Our room was good at the rear overlooking the mountains. The hotel was only half full and we could imagine that with the limited amount of space in the dining room, it would be quite difficult to cope at full capacity. It is a short walk into Kateleos which is a lovely fishing village and we walked there in the evenings. Nice cocktails and coffee at Floridida.

We hired a car for the day and toured the island. Have a look at Antisamos beach near Sami which was lovely....and of course Myrthos beach. Assos is lovely for lunch and Fiskardo was picturesque.

One point in Thomsons favour - we had a 5 hour delay coming home due to a Greek Traffic Controller's strike. Thomsons didn't dump us at the airport and after checking in took us by coach to Argostoli, fed and watered us and allowed us to have free time in the capital city. If only they could have organised things in the hotel as quickly as they arranged this!!

All in all we had a lovely holiday despite Thomsons failure to supply the holiday we had booked and paid for. If this can be sorted out it will be "Utopia" ....and we will return.

We booked independently with icelolly.com and considering what we paid (cheap n cheerful break), were amazed when we arrived at a clean, beautiful and plush looking hotel. The front desk chap Christos couldn't help enough, immediately attending to us when we arrived. We were lead to our suite which was absolutely gorgeous in fixtures and fittings with Jacuzzi bath and two terrace style patio's. Smiles all round :)
We decided to go for a spot to eat and a nose about the place to discover our surroundings. All of the girls wanted to book treatments in the spa as soon as possible, and the spa element of the hotel was a major factor in our booking. Unfortunately, it was like a ghost town. Stunningly set up, but no staff. It was like Pompeii without the fallout. When someone eventually appeared several hours later, we were told of the range of services and treatments available and we could book after 5pm the next day. Seemed a little odd of an evening only spa, but hey ho, when in Greece and all that. So we booked in and took in the rest of the hotel in the meantime.
The all inclusive basis was very loosely termed. I would say more 'full board', as was three meals a day and wine, beer and soft drinks only. The snack bar was open but the only throughout-the-day snack available was toast. I really think this was down to miscommunication between the hotel and the holiday providers, however, as upon complaining (i am allergic to grapes and yeast so no alcohol for me) we discovered that the hotel had only ever sold itself as full board to Thompson (who everyone else in the hotel travelled with) and to our company, icelolly. No drinks for me all holiday then.
Never mind, we still had the spa. And we really decided to treat ourselves! We booked the whole place out for just our party, and would be the first ones to use the sauna, steam rooms and all the expensive looking bamboo cladded treatment and massage rooms. Excitedly, we marched, towels in one hand and a fistful of dollars in the other, to the spa to discover....nobody. Except an Italian speaking lady who was obviously cleaning the place. After an hour of hunting down staff (probably five in total for the whole spa AND hotel) we were told to wait. So we did until the manager Effie appeared at our appointment time. Ok, so she was on time, but it takes an hour for the steam room and sauna to be fully functioning before use. We couldn't have the treatments in this time as a lot of them were pedicures and manicures which would require paint to dry etc. Anyway, so no problems we thought, these things happen and its a new hotel so glitches blah blah blah. All is forgiven and we will use the privately booked Jacuzzi pool instead. The fully heated, bubbly Jacuzzi pool. Errrrr, no. Jacuzzi pool is broken and they're waiting for 'the man from Athens' to work his magic on it. They had been waiting a week already and no sign...so why, the day before, were we told we can use this and were even given a guided tour of the facilities?! After several conversations in broken English, we discover that all the hotel manager has told Effie that she is to pretend everything is fine and that to advise 'all spas are like this'. She is a sensible woman and is embarrassed to be in this position. She has advised everyone with a complaint to make an official complaint in writing to 'Miss Peggy', as the hotel manager does not want to listen to his staff. It appears he is happy to take several bookings for the hotel but does not want to supply the service offered. The ultra modern gym was literally an empty room. When staff of a brand new hotel are openly discussing this with customers, they really must be desperate. On the plus side, the lovely Effie gave us discounted pedicures and a free body massage, and when the sauna and steam room were ready, we used them free of charge too. A small recompense but I feel the woman's hands were tied and she was pretty much blame free for the whole debacle.
The food was clean and fresh, and all the waiting staff very friendly and helpful. The range of foods was limited, but not always a bad thing I think.
On the whole, a beautiful hotel and I certainly could not complain at the price I paid, but I know a lot of Thompson customers had paid a huge amount in comparison and to receive the same service and facilities is a joke. My friends and I ended up being a makeshift entertainments team, spending our days by the pool googling quiz questions, singing with backing tracks from an ipad and the use of Christos's computer speakers, and performing a poor mans water aerobics session. People said these things were the highlight of their holiday; which speaks volumes really!!
I am going to rate this holiday a three in the hope that the hotel manager and the holiday providers communicate a bit more and sort out the glitches. I am sure we were just guinea pigs and were being secretly filmed (Greek Tragedy-coming to a screen near you soon). The hotel really is plush, the staff are amazingly helpful, and being a small hotel it does have a close knit feel making you feel quite at home quite quickly. In short, don't blame the Utopia for the lack of facilities; the staff are doing their best when they have an owner that just wants to earn money and treat the holidaymakers like idiots, and Thompson really need to visit their hotels before advertising services that are blatantly not available (swim-up bar???).
Visit Kefalonia, visit the Utopia....but do it next Summer not now.
