I have found this an ideal location for visits out with my kids, we often turn up and have a walk round the museum, sometimes there is an extra themed day or event going on, theres a lovely little cafe with some great menu ideas as well as the traditional stuff, not to mention the park area for the kids and the bits of old machinery waiting to be scoured over by keen eyed mechanical type fellows lol.

I chose to review the Museum, not because of the varied content or the friendliness of its staff, but because of the attached cafe Sophielles - which doesn't have its own review spot.
Family run and always worth a visit, we used to come along with the family in tow for the museum and the bird centre. Now we generally stop off just for the cafe.
The friendliest staff you could wish to meet with home cooked, wonderfully priced food - the hot meals are gorgeous. Chips are double dipped and the cakes/buns/flapjacks are stunning. We never leave without a flapjack or slice of cake to enjoy when we get home.
Three of us visited, with a baby each had a hot meal, a drink each and topped it off with a homemade fruit scone to share and gingerbead man for the little one and there was plenty change from £20.
And we ended up taking some of the food away, there was so much.
Do not miss out on the cafe when visiting, you'll be missing a treat.

We spent a great afternoon at the museum, the children (aged 4 and 7) found it very interesting (they dressed up as Anglo-saxons which they loved) and the current film accompagnying the exhibition was very well done. They also enjoyed a run around the playpark afterwards.

The museum is free. The displays are changed regularly and the staff are helpful. There is free parking too. Interesting info, photos and exhibits about local life and other artifacts in the many rooms on different floors. There are toilets and a children's playground and picnic area on site too. Worth a visit.
