We stayed at Kowhai Cottage in January during a trip to the Abel Tasman National Park and enjoyed it very much. Jill has converted 2 very large rooms in her home into comfortable and well appointed B&B rooms. She told us that she only accepts one party of guests at a time as there is only one bathroom and she’s found that people prefer not to share. (The bathroom is nice, native wood panelled, with a lovely deep bath).
There is a beautiful garden which is a lovely spot to relax in with its fish pond, varied plants and the biggest lemon tree you’ve ever seen. Jill obviously has very green fingers when it comes to gardening and produces some wonderful food from it as you’ll experience with the organic breakfast she serves. I have a feeling that she may have asked us if we wanted anything cooked for breakfast but we were more than happy with a continental style breakfast – and frankly we could have happily spent the whole morning relaxing on the terrace with fresh orange juice, coffee and the wonderful food she served which included fresh fruit (including figs from her garden), toast with home made preserves and muesli. The sun was shining, she put some music on and it was all just perfect and very restful. We sat there wondering if we should stay on for a while longer and that I think is a good compliment for Jill and her B&B.
The only thing I would say is that it’s not really suited to self-caterers, there is a tiny kitchenette hidden in a cupboard in the room with a microwave, jug, fridge, plates and cutlery but no sink etc so while it’s great to make yourself a cup of tea & a snack, it’s not sufficient for cooking but there a are plenty of restaurants and takeaways nearby and she does have a BBQ available for use. That aside, I highly recommend this B&B and we’d definitely be keen to stay again should we make it back to the area on our next trip.
