My wife and I stayed at the Kenoa Beach Spa & Resort in July, which is off-season for Brazil, but still very pleasant weather. Our expectations for the resort were as high as the prices, but we were not disappointed. From the arrival welcome, (which was warm and genuine, and the arrival cocktail which was cool, tasty and refreshing), to the quality of the bedrooms and the excellent service from all the team here, we were impressed throughout our stay.
The owner, Pedro and his team were all very hands-on, without being intrusive, and Iran in the Wine Bar deserves a special mention - we did not meet one member of staff who was not charming and friendly, and yet all very service orientated too.
We stayed in one of the eight Marajó Villas, which are spacious, well designed and well thought-out rooms, each with a sea view and its own private plunge pool. The facilities in the room were great, and I would struggle to find anything missing. If I had to search for a fault, it would only be that the picture mounted above our bed was mounted slightly too low, so that if sitting up in bed reading, your head would be resting against it - that's how far you have to go to find a fault with this hotel.
The restaurant serves a varied menu with a mix of local cuisine, and a speciality being dishes cooked in a Portuguese Cataplana dish. The food was always tasty, well presented, well served and interesting - certainly on a three night stay, we did not tire of the menu. The wine list is comprehensive, although perhaps on the pricey side for our tastes - having said that, if you are staying here, you are unlikely to be that price sensitive, so I think this is more our European upbringing where we simply do not expect to pay large amounts for good wine - not the case in Brazil for a variety of reasons, not least import duties! Iran knew his wines well, and can make a good recommendation.
Breakfast deserves a particular mention - no tired looking buffets here! The plated breakfast comprises of fruit, cereals, cold cuts, breads & pastries and the kitchen will happily cook you something not on the menu on request - the omelette cooked in the cataplana was light and fluffy, and cooked to perfection. Even the organic coffee from a nearby coffee plantation was above par - could this be the hotel utopia I have been searching for?
The location is fairly remote - don't stay here expecting to find lots of things to do - the hotel is the attraction. You visit this hotel to be spoiled, to relax and to enjoy the service and product. This said, aside from the pool, spa, restaurant, wireless internet (free, but good) there is also a range of DVD's available, and probably music CD's too. But to put it bluntly, if you can't entertain yourself in a luxury setting like this, then perhaps it is not for you.
Overall, this place has achieved so much in the little time it has been open, and I hope it maintains the standards it has set itself. Fantastic.
