We just got back from a week at Sol Cayo Largo Sept 13th, and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff is fantastic, the food is excellent. The site is very well maintained with lots of attention to details. The ocean-front rooms may cost a bit more but are worth every penny. They include late check-out, special invitation for a-la-carte lobster, Mini-fridge refill every day (beer and pop), great ocean view (2nd floor), close to beach, faster check-in. Mosquitos were not an issue, the late-day fogging seems to do the job just fine and is no real inconvenient in itself. Maybe use repellent in the evening to ensure zero bite. The beaches are great. Would definately recommend this hotel to friends.

we travelled to the Sol cayo largo Sept 2 to sept 9, this was our first time here, and we enjoyed the resort, very cuban feeling, it was very humid and hot, and a few flies, but we like it hot hot, the food had variety, we never went hungry, lots of drinks, bottled room every day in your room, the rooms were spacious, clean, the beds appeared to be comfortable. the safe worked well, lots of crabs in the evening, and house cats every where, turtles are a high light in this area..the pool has just been relined, and very nice...they were installing flat screen tv's when we were their...one of the staff stood out to us she was in the main dinngroom, and greeted us every morning with a smile and hug..they are not as friendly at the rancho down by the ocean, and the service is not as good there as the main dinngroom..that was my only complaint..other than that we would go back the price was right for a get away..we would go back again..

Room Tip: we had room 2714 fairly close to the beach, but you still walk about less than 5 mintues to the beac...

I look through late reviews & agree with most of the positive points made by writers.
I would like also to mention the things which you might see & experience at this resort, which you, i guess, would like not to see or experience.
Hotel is outdated, - furniture in the rooms, washroom hardware, mattresses simply ready for dump.
However, maids keep rooms sparkles, little fridges and air-conditioners are perfectly good and that mitigate negative impression from mentioned above.
Some rooms have new flat TV, same time signal isn't perfect and picture on most of the channels have snow.
So, if you are looking for something which is widely available in new resorts of Punta Cana, Samana or Cancun (again I'm talking about rooms) I wouldn't recommend this resort.
This resort for ones who value good atmosphere, beautiful beaches, long walks, white sand, clear ocean
I need to mention that food, it is good at Sol. I would prefer to see more greens, but it's about it.
Hope this review help for you to decide

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms still far from the ocean

Yes we are going back again for our 3rd time in 2yrs. this late October for a wopping 9days and not only do we miss the most amazing beaches in the world but we miss the friends/workers we made there that were so very nice to us.
We both absolutely adore Nestor, Angel, Yuliet, Michelle, Katie, Yvis, Coffy and Heidi the amazing dancer who really likes my wife but hardly speaks english. ;-)
If your a picky eater or picky shallow person do not go to this resort or if your looking to party.
This is Cuba Ladies and Gents, a very laid back atmosphere and there are going to be a few hickups here and there.
The first time we went our suite's air conditioning did not work and we had to be patient but in 2hrs or so they found us another room. Second time our oceanview had a crack in the glass sliding doors and they moved us into another nice suite right away!
If your taking a shower before dinner make sure you take one before 5pm or there will not be much water at all and bring a facecloth or 2 cause they do not supply them. ;-)
They do their best with what they have to work with but if there is something wrong with your room and you are polite with them they will go the extra mile for you!
The first time we went there we noticed a couple of the workers looked really grumpy and should not work with the public and do not smile.
So if they serve you like that just do not tip them and maybe they will learn.
50 to 60% of the tourists at this resort are older 60 and above, which is kewl and yes some on the clothing optional beach part as well! :-)
Some of the nude peeps there like to gawk at my beautiful wife so you can ignore them like we do most of the time or this one perv I chucked a moon at him and he got the msg.
So hence if your shy like us there are spots where its more secluded and private farther down past the nude beach where you can be totally on your own. Be partially naked or totally... no prob at all. (There was a beautiful older german couple nude that actually played some frisbee with us which was fun)
Yes we have made good friends from the resort but tourists as well from Canada and abroad.
We also bring gifts for some of our fav workers for ex: ballcaps, sunglasses, jewelry(not expensive), stylish clothes and last time, being a retired prof. musician, I brought music supplies for the talented musicians there that don't have much and all of them were so grateful.
By the way the dancers are amazing and are at the top of their game and practice daily.
Read a few of the bad reviews on here and I was surprised to hear that there were cucarachas there? Never seen one? Hope not to....especially my wife! :-)
Yes at times the flies are bad but the last time there were only a few at night so just wear some good bug spray with deet.
Next time we are renting a scooter to explore some other parts of the amazing beaches.
Enjoy your trip cause we will regardless of a few hickups here and there.
Can't wait!!

We stayed at sol for from sep 2. to sep 9. For me it was a great expereince. The resort is beautiful and the staff are amazingly nice. We made friends with a lot of the staff. Speaking with the staff was another great experience, people like guillermo, danger, liomar, rudy, yusimir and yordi made our stay so much better with their generosity and friendliness. I feel like we made life longs friends in cayo largo. I am definately going back again as soon as i can. The beaches are also breathtaking and are probably the second best part of the resort after the people. There are however lots of mosquitos there and the food is ok. But the pros far outweigh the cons. I had a great time and I met some amazing people.

We visited Sol Cayo Largo for a week in January 2013. The previous 3 years we had done Mexico trips, two to Riviera Maya which we thought were the most beautiful beaches we had ever seen. Boy were we wrong. Cayo Largo is simply stunning. The beaches, the ocean, the people. You cannot go wrong.

We don't have huge expectations of entertainment, and generally don't partake. We look for a trip that has a fantastic beach, excellent snorkeling, and a relaxing atmosphere. Which is exactly what you will find on Cayo Largo.

The hotel itself was as most put it a little run down. But it was by no means a dump. You could see they were renovating some big sections of rooms, so they are trying. They did a good job keeping the grounds tidy and clean. The room was also well kept with only a couple minor issues. We did not get a bottle of water one day, but a call to the desk had one dropped to us in minutes. We also had a failure of the battery in our safe, which was locked of course. But the repairman was out within about 15 minutes (at 10:00 at night!) Opened it right away and had it fixed the next morning.

The food is a major point that lots of people seem to complain about. Initially we were a little let down, after the previous spreads available in Mexico it was obvious that this wasn't to the same level. However after a couple days we started to learn the tricks. The buffet is great, but in the corner of the restaurant was fresh meat cooked as ordered. Another stand had fresh seafood. Then there was the beach restaurant. Again a bit of a let down. Until we realized that just outside was a poor guy in a BBQ hut getting smoked out, but making the most amazing chicken and meat. Hot dogs and hamburgers made to order. It was excellent!!

One oddity on a personal note. As most English only speaking Canadians we were the minority. Our AC flight left from Montreal and was mostly French speaking. The majority of people we saw at the resort were European (lots of Russians). Every single person we met from the resort was mutilingual, and if they could not communicate in English we could get by in my extremely broken Spanish. It was fantastic.

We booked an oceanview room and weren't sure what to expect. The room itself was the closest to the beach in the resort, and on the second floor. You could see out over the beach hills to the wonderful blue water. We had a hammock on the little deck and it was absolutely fabulous to waste away the afternoon listening to the waves, reading our books, and sipping on some Bucaneero beer.

The snorkeling directly in front of the hotel is equally as good as anything I experienced in Riviera Maya. The beach is soft and sandy, and the water clear. However walking or taking a bus to Playa Sirenas is absolutely amazing. There is a huge coral outcrop about a 10 minute snorkel that was full of thousands of different fish.

We also took a boat tour out to the Iguana Island, and a snorkeling excursion.

I would recommend this resort to ANYONE looking for something a little different.

We loved it so much. We are in fact researching our next January trip and so far a return to Cayo Largo is #1 on our list. Except this time we're trying for two weeks as one simply isn't enough!!

Room Tip: Opt for the oceanview room, you won't be disappointed.

So,flies everywhere!!! Especially around the beach. They probably come from beach restaurant. It's really disgusting to eat when flies are on your plate, hands, face, table,in your drink,everywhere...Then when you want to relax at the beach they are all over you again!!! Frustrating and disgusting!!!!! Also a lot of cats around,at the buffet etc. and also lots of ants i the room and especially bathroom. But they are all minor problems if you compare them with flies.
We said our problem at the reception and they said that they spray property but obviously without effect. It would be nice that manager goes on a lunch at Ranchon and then down to the beach and I would like to know how relaxed he is and how many flies followed him!

Food at the buffet was ok but it would be nice if there were more fruits and salad. Food in Italian restaurant is nice and sir who plays guitar there is fantastic. The International restaurant was dissapointing.

Nature is beautiful and also is the beach, whole island is beautiful.

We will not return there because hygiene is very important to us and I didn't find it there because of disgusting flies and cats everywhere. Too expensive for what we got.
