This was our 6th time to Cuba, first time to this location, We would go back for sure and stay longer.
A caveat some reviewers need to understand - Cuba is a different standard than the rest of the Carribean, so you should always have lowered expectations in Cuba, If you want true 5-star - don't go to Cuba
That said, we love Cuba for the laid back feel, wonderful people and the stunning beaches.
Sol Cayo Largo is a lovely spot, the beach at the hotel is great but there are even better beaches very close by. To get to Playa Sirena, just take the shuttle and the boat. There is food, bathrooms, umbrellas right there. I truly cannot imagine a more beautiful beach to spend the day. The water is so gorgeous, clear, clam, it is very hard to leave and go back on land!
The hotel: is a bit run down but clean and tidy. We had an ocean view upper room, well worth the extra cost. There seems to be an attitude lately amongst hotel guests wanting to pay the lower rate and then complain themselves into an upgrade. Hotels have caught on to this and upgrades are becoming less likely due to this. Just pay up front and enjoy your holiday. Our friends had the regular room, it was just fine too. The grounds are very nicely kept. We enjoyed the salt water pool as well as the beach. There are 2 nudist beaches so there are a lot of naked people walking around. The beach is always windy and there are fun waves to play in. If you want calmer water go to Playa Sirena on the shuttle
The staff - are happy, hard-working, eager to please. They are constantly asking if everything is ok and trying hard to fix things. Again, remember this is Cuba, they have a lack of resources so keep your expectations in check!
Excursions/Activities - we did the shuttle to the beach which is free and wonderful. We also rented a car which is a waste of time & money ($45) - the island is so small there is nowhere to go! The hotel has snorkels to borrow (free) there is great reef snorkelling right off the hotel beach. Equipment is limited, if you can, bring your own.
Entertainment - the staff put on some fun shows but in general this resort is more relaxed than others and that includes the entertainment. We prefer this atmosphere as opposed to other resorts that have loud thumping music everywhere. I love that there is no music at the beach. The pools are quiet until about 4 pm when they start some loud muisc activites but we figured that out the first day and just went to the beach then.
Food - it's Cuba...but this hotel is pretty good - as usual, the food is plain and there are very few fresh vegatbles, no lettuce ever! But there are plenty of choices for a week. The Cubans do protein really well: always lots of meat, chicken, fish and egg choices. Also they are good on dairy (esp cheese and ice cream) and pasta.
An important note re money: Bring CND cash. The hotel does not advance on a CC.But they do exchange CND for CUC. There is a bank in town but who wants to spend they holiday at a bank? You need 25 CUC (approx$25) each to get out of the country plus whatever else you spend which wont be much because there is not much to buy. You can buy your rum and coffee & cigars at the airport with a CC. You can also buy it in town or at the hotel with a CC.
We plan to go back next year!

Room Tip: we had room 3623 - far from the main building it was nice & quiet

Stayed there for scubadiving holidays. Not the best dives in the world but OK. Dive masters were fantastic!

Hotel is a bit outdated but is very clean and confortable. It is the most expensive hotel of the island but it is understandable why... Food was surprisingly good (bring your spices) so I don't understand why some people are complaining because there was always something good to eat but remember it is Cuba! Beautiful beach and beach restaurant is truly awesome and romantic. The hotel was full packed but it seemed very quiet at all times. This is definitely not a place for partying, just for relaxing and enjoying a really peaceful vacation. Part of the beach is for nudists. You can walk nude for kilometers without beeing disturbed. Very friendly staff and excellent espresso coffee at the lobby bar. Cayo largo is a secluded and very small island, no peddlers, no hookers! This is probably a place I will go back many times just for beauty holidays!

What a great experience . We have been to Cuba 30 times and this by far was the most relaxing. Only tourists and workers on this island. Happy workers, I might add. What a great bunch at Sol Cayo Largo. Front desk is Yuli who is the most helpful wee girl. Your comfort is most important to them. The food was great for Cuba, they have an Italian head chef and this made for more tasty food for Cuba...as you know Cuba is not known for its food. My husband is very plain so it suits us. A bit of a fly problem as we were there in off season, September 9th but they tried to keep food covered as best they could. We had a wonderful massage at the spa zone. Crabs walk around at night but when they hear you they run and hide. We were there for the baby turtles to be released. Great experience . The beach was amazing. The sand like icing sugar. A true 24hr bar with a great mix of bartenders. Entertainment gang were great. We took the bikes out for 4 hrs and after 3 1/2 had seen all..lol. Had a great lobster dinner at the marina. All in all..great R&R. I will most certainly be back.

Room Tip: We had 0223 and for us the location looking over the salt water pool and close to 24 hr bar was close to gym spa and tennis courts. . Depends on what you like and for us the location worked well.

I went to Sol Cayo Largo for the sixth time. This time I stayed in an ocean front room and it was great. You have free soda and beer everyday. You have towels in your room and robes. You get a complimentary lobster dinner. There is a coffee maker in the room and free coffee every day. There is an alarm clock with a CD player in it. All of the staff are great. Was nice to see old friends: Janine, Caesar and Nestor etc. Beach was magnificent. Renovations going strong. Food good. Next year plan to go back for 2 weeks. Hopefully my son will come . He has never been to Cuba. I miss Sol Cayo already. Excellent job Mr. Thomas. I take off my hat to you!

Room Tip: Second floor ocean front.
