This was our third trip to the Sol Cayo Largo but definately not our last. From the moment we set foot in the lobby we felt that we were back home. The check-in staff were quick and efficient but we were told that our room wasnt quite ready so we left our cases in the lobby and headed to the bar ( no problems with leaving the cases, always someone to watch them for you) where we were greeted by the barmen that we had last seen 2 years ago as though we had never left. We were in room 2224 (top floor in the middle of the resort) I had thought that as returning guests we would have had an upgrade but the room was clean, cool and gave a sea view.
We had read that there was a new chef at the resort and the food was certainly better than on our last visit with pasta, meat and fish stations as well as the buffet choices available for the evening meal, the Cubans do BIG bits of meat very well and we recommend the roast pork with crackling as well as the casseroled meats which were very tender. We ate at the pool/snack bar for lunch and were never dissapointed with the quality or level of service ( I had had problems with some chicken from the beach restaurant on our last visit ) although the BBQ looked and smelled amazing just make sure that the meat is cooked all the way through.
There are a couple of things that we feel would just make this resort even better and they are;
A new 4th board walk from the 3000 end of the resort, guests have been making their way across the sand dunes and so to protect the natural habitation and wild life another walkway might prevent any more damage being done ? And lastly a bar closer to the naturist end of the beach ? perhaps tied in with the above mentioned wallkway so save us oldies form walking the full length of the beach to refill our glasses please ???

Me and my sister stayed at Sol Cayo Largo resort in march 2014. The hotel is ok, but there are some inconveniences. The food is not good, specially the lunch which is horrible, the towels of the room are also not very clean. We had a bad experience with the wifi. Not with the signal which is great. My sister bought an hour wifi card that costs 8 dollars. Before one hour her signal ended. We went to the front desk to see what was going on and they printed a report that showed she used all her time. The problem was in two periods described at the report she was not at the lobby (the only place where the wifi works). One of the times we were still at the room and at the other we were at a boat tour and actually the person that sold this excursion for us works for a company at an office at the resort. We explained that but the hotel staff treated us as if we were not saying the truth and did not give us our credits back. We really felt ofended with that. Even a manager called Alien did the same. The resort is very expensive. We payed both 600 euros for three nights, so I can say it is too expensive for what they offer.

Dear Clients:
We express our apology for the aspects that you are not pleased. As for the wifi service, the hotel only provides the card , this is a communications service completely independent to the access or management of the hothel. From our side you were treated and showed the charges.

The reason why we are writing this review is because we just arrived home yesterday and are missing Sol Cayo Largo dearly, and we want everyone to know how much of an amazing resort this is.

Having been to other destinations in Cuba, we had our expectations set before arriving. However, we were greatly surprised at how amazing our stay was. The employees made the trip, with their happy vibes and smiles every day and were always so helpful wether it came to any questions we had or any problems that occurred. The employees became our good friends, and we are already missing their friendly faces.

The resort itself was very beautiful and well kept as well, with a gorgeous salt water pool in the centre of the resort and palm trees everywhere. The buildings were very open and you always had a nice breeze coming through while you had dinner at the buffet or a drink at the lobby bar. Everything was also in a good location and was easy to find.

The beach was STUNNING! The water was so blue and crystal clear and the sand was so white. We found ourselves being in awe each and every day because of its absolute beauty. We visited a beach nearby with mopeds and found that beach equally as stunning.

Even though there was many couples, we found that everyone who stayed here was extremely friendly and nice and you could talk to anyone and become friends within an instant. We made friends with people of many countries such as Argentina, Italy and Sweden.

The only bad thing we have to say is that we wished we could've stayed for 1 more week, 1 week is definitely not enough time to enjoy such a beautiful resort and island.Thank you to everyone at Sol Cayo Largo for making this the best trip yet. We will hopefully be coming back soon.

I have everything positive to say about our trip and our stay at Sol Cayo Largo.
If you do a little research prior to your trip, you'll have realistic expectations about Cuba and the facilities where you'll be staying.
My wife and I arrived early afternoon, our flight got in and hour earlier which was great for us. Do some research prior to your trip and try to grab a flight (if you can) that arrives after lunch. Why? Give the hotel some time to clean up, get the rooms ready after other guests have checked out and more importantly, so you won't complain that your room is not ready. This applies to anywhere you go and any hotel you stay at. It's just plain common sense.

Our room was ready upon check-in, we had a refreshing welcome drink while waiting in line to check-in but missed the orientation from our Air Canada rep. No worries, we found him the next day when we went to book a Catamaran tour ($89).
If there is one thing you do on this trip, I highly recommend a day tour from the Marina with the Lobster lunch. If that would of been the only positive experience on our trip, everything still would have been worth it!

Our room (2221) was on the second floor, beautiful view of the resort, pool area, beach and the morning sunrise. Everything worked properly, true the rooms may be a little outdated but ask yourself, will you be spending most of your time in your room? Or will you be soaking up the rays on the powder sand beaches? I'd probably ask for a room next time a little further away from the night entertainment. 2221 is facing the pool area and the 10-11pm night show.
Our room had a mini fridge, a bottle of water everyday which we struggled to finish since most of our fluid intake was at one of the bars on the resort or from savoring the Cuban coffee throughout the day.
True, shower and water pressure at times was a little low but nothing I haven't experienced at some of the top hotels in Canada.

The one thing that sticks out in my mind throughout our stay happened during the buffet bbq lunch by the beach one day. I was very surprised to see the hotel manager/director (Fernando I think) come by and check on everything, and then proceed to clean off tables during the lunch rush for guests waiting to grab a seat. Having worked in the hotel/service industry, it was awesome to see the service and it shows he cares.

The morning buffet selection was more than plentiful, fresh omelets, pancakes and juices. For dinner you have a selection of restaurants (which require a reservation) or the daily dinner buffet. There's a seafood bar, grill station as well as a pasta bar which I found to be delicious.

Tip: When you arrive, go to the departure section (next door) and exchange your currency there. If they are open. Slightly better exchange rate but still not terrible at the hotel.

If you have some Cuban currency (CUC5-8) pesos you can grab a taxi from the airport to the hotel and this will save on having to wait in line for check-in. Plus, you'll be on the beach before the other guests arrive via bus. Same applies when leaving. Grab a cab back since it's a small airport and everyone arrives at the same time to check-in.

To sum up our stay, perhaps we were not looking to go shopping, or gourmet cuisine. We weren't looking to always be doing something, to be on the go and have a wealth of activities etc... Maybe that's why we enjoyed ourselves so much! We did however, rent a scooter a couple of times to zoom into the Marina (small village with a couple of shops and a souvenir stand).

My advice, get off your plane, check-in, change into your swim suit and go relax with a rum punch on the beach. In the evening, sit outside and look up! Guaranteed you'll see something you rarely see in the city. Pure awesome night sky.

We did get sun burned (quite badly) but still well worth it since everyday was +32c and sunny. We'd do it all over again and plan to next winter. Thank you Sol Cayo Largo.

Room Tip: We stayed in Rm2221 (second floor), a little noisy from 10-11pm when the entertainment starts but gr...

As you can tell after 18 visits, it would appear we love this place and the resort. We have just returned from our latest visit to the Sol Cayo Largo and have to compliment the General Manager, Fernando Martin who, together with his staff and the Executive Chef, Gaspera (sp) are making improvements to the resort itself and to the quality of the food. The swimming pool has been totally refitted - it's a beautiful salt water pool and very well maintained by Eduardo and the pool crew. The gardens are looking better every year and there appears to be constant refurbishing of rooms and general maintenance. It's always a pleasure and a great holiday to spend time there. The restaurant and bar staff are great fun and obliging. The beach is superb and the ocean beautiful. Can't say enough about it.

Chris and Joan

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the pool tend to be a bit noisier because of the activities and entertainment.

Dear Chris and Joan:

Thank you so much for your compliments, but I have to say that the accomplishment is not only mine or Gaspare´s, but all the staff. They are the ones who make you want to come back every time and if the gardens, the pool and the hotel in general, are looking so beautiful, it is because of them.
We will keep improving our facilities and services, so we hope you come back for a 19th time to spend a great holiday full of pleasure.

I went to a few resort but this was the first time with my 1 1/2 year old daughter. The distance from the airport was that made us choose this resort. We have been told that the Pelicano was better for kids but since she's really young, we went for the Sol Cayo Largo anyway.

This was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable week of my life. The pool is big and quiet. We alway had good spots without having to think about chair reservation. Almost the same thing at the beach. If you like playing in the waves, this is the place.

Food was ok. It could have more variety but I guess it's the best they can do with the supply. I would have eaten there for another week. Pasta are excellent, pizza and burger are ok. Nice eggs and pancakes in the morning. Lots of (similar) cakes and sweets. Ice cream was excellent.

Room: Our AC was working well but my step-familly's room was not (2222). They where switched to another room after a tech was sent to "fix it" (which did't do anything) and a few discussion. Also, we hear loud music and voices from the 10PM show if the AC was not on (room 2222). If you want to go to bed early, try a room which is far from the main stage.

Most staff can speak french, english and spanish.

The staff was really kind with us and our kid. Although they are not a family or kid resort, they have high chair everywhere.

There is basically nothing to do other than relax and swimming. Don't expect to be entertained. I hate it when you are almost forced to play beachvolley or soccer. You don't get that there.

Room Tip: Block 22 was great (between pool, beach and buffet) but you will hear the 10PM show.

Dear Manuel:

What an honour for us to know that you have had one of the most relaxing and enjoyable week of your life!
The pool is one of the things that our visitors like the most since it was recently renovated.
Regarding the food, it is true we have some shortages, but we try to make it up with the service.
Although we are not a family resort we take our providences in order to please those that overcome that fact and choose us anyways, just like you and your family did.
It is really accomplishing for us that you have felt so good in our hotel.

I think my wife best described this resort by saying it was tired. Our room looked a little rough, closet doors didn't close, dresser drawers stuck closed. The bathroom has one mirror with stains all over it and one mirror pulled out of the wall and laying on the sink. If our package price had been less, it would have been more acceptable but the room definitely did not meet the price expectations. Although we had the VIP oceanview package, there was never coffee for the room coffee maker. I was told there was none available. However, being Cuba, the staff was great and compensated for the shortages. Great cooks working with a very limited variety of materials, the pasta was the best I have ever had, the turkey was amazing. Pool area was beautiful. The beach was excellent but the water was way too rough for snorkeling, not the resort's fault. The entertainment and recreational activities fell considerably short of any other Cuban resort we have been too. Our room had a great view of the ocean. If you are Canadian you might prefer a resort where the staff has a better grasp of English as this resort appeared to cater almost exclusively to Italians. We would not return to this resort unless the price was discounted considerably and we would only recommend it to anyone else under the same circumstances.

Room Tip: Room 3721 has an amazing view and a quiet location.
