Upgrading to the beachfront villa was an excellent plan in this low-key resort. It afforded a very large bedroom, two bathrooms, sitting room and massive balcony from which to enjoy the sounds and views of the sea.
Cayo Largo del Sur is a modest hotel by North American standards as are so many in Cuba. So, if you are prepared for an exquisite beach, beautiful ocean, peaceful surroundings and warm and helpful staff, it's a wonderful holiday. If you expect it to be like home, then don't come. If you open yourself the possibility of a truly beautiful island surrounded by seas that are infinitely walkable and swimmable, a chill atmosphere in a comfortable room, with adequate food, then this is truly a magical place...
Food at Cayo Largo del Sur is less varied than in some spots yet again, if one travels with the notion that eating fruit and vegetables that are fresh and in season, a good array of fresh fish each day, meat dishes ranging from grilled rabbit or chicken for lunch to more extensive dinners in the two a la carte restaurants, then you too will be happy. Good cappuccinos are made in the bar near the lobby by a happy crew of bartenders, and meals served by servers who are kind, gracious and hard-working.
The location of this hotel is also advantageous as it is the furthest along the beach with the most beautiful white sand of all the hotels. Some days the waves were stronger and swimming out the front of the beach more challenging, but in truth, that is mot really a problem. There are better alternatives on such days!
Once you have walked along the beach for an hour and a half to Playa Paraiso and then 15 minutes further to Playa Sirena, it's hard to imagine wanting to be elsewhere than on these more secluded and dare one say -- even more spectacular beaches! The water is warm warm warm and beautifully safe and swimmable -- we would swim for two hours at a time it was so gorgeous. Take water and a small picnic, walk the beach to Paraiso or Sirena or rent a scooter or take the small "train" for 2 CUC.
A week in Cayo Largo was sublime. Weather was splendid - 25 - 27 C each day with sun, sometimes a short period of overcast skies, the most beautiful verandah on which to read and have coffee or a mojito, and simply amazing beaches with the marvellous Cubanos making one's stay all that more memorable!
