“A unique experience”
Reviewed 2 July 2009

Our host at Ironwood Lodge could not have been more helpful during our two visits to Ironwood once in April and again during May. We were attending a friends wedding in Pennington so finding this accommodation was perfect for us. The view from our room and balcony over the gardens and ocean were a bonus. Our balcony ws also an excellent spot to view the various visitors to the garden such as birds, butterflies and even monkies.

Jim offers meals at night and whilst the wine list is limited, the food is freshly caught by him and he is an excellent cook.

The accommodation is unique as much of the furniture has been made by Jim himself and there is a story behind each piece. Our room had some interesting aspects and provided everything that we needed and a unique experience that we would not have missed.

Jim provided us with invaluable information on some interesting sights for when we travelled south from Pennington to the Garden Route. He is informative, friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

If you want friendly, genuine and personal hospitality then do try Ironwood Lodge.

Ironwood Lodge suffers from being in Pennington in the sense that this is not a great beach resort; on the other hand it is not commercialised and is probably more typical of the sort of place where South Africans go to relax in their own, or rented, beach cottage. Ironwood Lodge is set back from the beach across a railway line, not that that matters as trains pass infrequently and if any went by while we were asleep we didn't hear them. You do need a car for access as it is at the northern end of the village. Our room was spacious, comfortable and ideal for 3 adults. It was airconditioned and had a fridge and tea/coffee facilities. It seems none of the rooms is identical and there is probably one to suit any travellers' requirements. Jim is very obliging and friendly and his staff serve an excellent breakfast. All in all, if you want to experience a typical South Coast get-away-from-it-all resort you could do worse, and if you are a golfer it is ideally situated for Umdoni (take a cart) and Selbourne (first class).

We spend our honeymoon in South Africa and wanted to spend 3 to 4 days near Durban, go swimming and play golf.
Fortunetly we booked a double room with breakfast at the Ironwood Lodge in Pennington! Jim, the owner of the Ironwood Lodge, gave us such a warm and friendly welcome. First he alowed us to choose the room we liked the most and while we`re having a shower he prepared us the barbeque. Joyning a cold beer together he answerd all our questions and gave us real good advices.
The house is clean, the garden lovely. Its just a few steps to the indian ocean. And only 2 min. by car to golf. It´s the ideal place for relaxing.
Jim is a good cook. Please try his fresh fish and his peach with redwine sauce.
We felt realy welcome and not only as guests but as new friends.
Spending the next holidays in South Africa we will book again at Jim`s Ironwood Lodge!!!
