“Beautiful view, still need a car”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2010

This large complex set on a hill has great sea views, but only if you are in one of the 36 out of about 100 units - that face out to the sea. Even then the sun disappears from late afternoon and this makes using the balcony a less appealing experience. If you intend just sitting by the pool be warned, you cannot have a drink or smoke around this area (only 2 out of a very extensive list). As a self catering based holiday there is still no snack menu available during the day at the restaurant. The units are timber framed and a lot of noise is transferred from all your surrounding apartments. Santa Guila apartments are about 10-15 mins drive to Porto Veccio and therefore a car is really necessary and a big additional cost

Nice and clean, excellent location and beautiful view. If you book through their website, you can choose your room instead if you book with travel agent you might end up with a room with vew on the car park.
Beach is only 5-10 minutes walk, with young children. A bit more coming back since it is a bit up hill.
There are plenty of beautiful beaches nearby.
We really enjoyed it

Having read a number of reviews on Trip Advisor about this complex, we did not know what we would get from our trip to Corsica, being first time visitors, but we had an excellent trip and the quieter end of season.

I do stress this later comment, as around the areas, many hotels and restaurants had already closed for the year and as such we had a quieter trip than others who would have visitied only a few weeks earlier.

This did not detract from the visit to a beatiful island and some wonderful weather.

With regards to Castell Verde, our apartment was very clean a fairly comfortable, although as a two bedroom apartment, it would have been a tight space for 4 adults. We had two bedrooms upstairs, a double and a room with bunk beds - all furnished in the style of a ships cabin with timber panels and mock portholes.

The kitchen was well equipped with an appreciated large fridge and a dishwasher.

Our only surprise was the style and size of the bathroom - a prefabricated unit placed within the apartment with a GRP shell - it was small, very small and next to the entrance door. This said we got used to it and had no real difficulties and there was always a good supply of hot water and the pressure of water in the shower was good.

The strange part for the UK traveller, were comments in the hotels guide that you had to clean your own room and if you did not wish to you may be charged 45 euro's or that maid service was limited to a weekly change of towels & bed linen - but you could have maid service for a charge of 40 euro. There is an easy way around this, simply ask for more towels from reception or from the cleaners around the site anbd they are more than helpful in providing this to you.

Having booked with Thompson/Portland all rooms had a "garden" view and not one of the better coastal facing rooms - do not consider this to be a garden, but simply a few bushes facing towards the car park, this said though this did offer a cooler area to spend time away from the high sun.

The location of the hotel is reasonably isolated 5 miles from Porto Vecchio with only facilities on the beach in walking distance (and the Moby Dick hotel/restaurant) - as such a car is essential unless you intend just to lie on the beach and we suggest that this is booked and collected from the airport. Search the reputable companies online and negotiate a good deal - as the cost of hiring once in Corsica is almost 3 times that of the online prices.

We had a car from Avis which suited us fine and the hotel was easy to find and there was ample car parking close to the apartments.

The car gave us freedom and we were able to travel into Porto Vecchio most evenings to enjoy a stroll around the town and to eat at some of the fine (but expensive) restaurants. We would highlight four for specific mention (3 positive, 1 less than so):

1) Med Alista- A treat we found on the last night (sadly) with absolutely outstanding service and more than generous helpings of Morocan food and well this was simply and easily the best meal we had in Porto Vecchio
2) Chez Laurent - a freindly welcome and service
3) A Merendella - a Terrace resaurant where we had some superb food and service

4) One restaurant was simply not worth eating at - or so the staff beleived - as once we were able to be shown to a table, we were left without attention, water, bread or even a menu for over 35 minutes before we left - please do not go to Furana as they simply did not want to serve us and were very disorganised.

As we travelled on a self catering basis, we would comment that the cost of food in supermarkets was higher than we are used to in the UK, but would suggest the use of Geant in Porto Vecchio for the best priced deals over other stores we visited.

We travelled all over the southern part of the island and the views from the mountains, to the views over the bays are simply spectacular - and I am confident in saying we will travel back to Corsica again in the future to continue our exploration of this fascinating island.

Well worth the cost of the trip - as we beleived we got a late bargain - and a location that demands to be explored

Flight to Figari was good and airport was efficient. We picked up our pre-ordered hire car - research market cos our car was £130 cheaper than Europecar, which is recommended by Thomson. Those without hire cars were met by Thomson Reps and their coach stopped at a small supermarket en-route to enable purchase of stuff for the apartment. Being a Sunday supermarkets local to Castell Verde are closed.

Reception at Castell Verde was efficient and pleasant. Although we arrived at 10.30am, apartments are not promised until 4pm, however most were available on arrival. Be aware that (probably due to price) some of the apartments allocated to Thomson customers have no sun on the balcony and have poor views; none of the Thomson apartments have a sea view.

The apartments are very well designed but are very basic. Maximum facilities are packed into the minimum space. The plastic module shower/toilet/washbasin room was ultra compact but as a 20 stoner I found it very practical and adequate. The kitchenette was also very practical and well stocked. There was a very large fridge with large freezer compartment, a dishwasher with a weeks supply of detergent tablets, an electric coffee maker, toaster and kettle, and there were masses of glasses (despite what one review says) and plenty of utensils and cutlery.

The resort is very clean, very pretty gardens and shrubs everywhere and very friendly. The beach was beautiful (as are the many different beaches within 10Km in either direction) and the beach bar is very adequate and not too expensive. Pizzas range from 9-12 Euros and a medium beer was 2.75 Euros (about the norm anywhere in Corsica). This may go up in high season, I don't know. The restaurant along the beach was quite good but over priced. The resort owned supermarket down near the beach is well stocked but extortionate; avoid it if possible!!

Corsica is beautiful; very green, very mountainous and quite un-developed. The roads are in good condition and the standard of driving is fairly good; driving was not a problem. We loved it , we had a wonderful week and, unusual for us, have decided that we will definitely go back to the same resort next year.

Just returned from a 7 day break to Corsica staying at Castell'Verde on a self catering option (residence). Booked with Portland Direct, but the adminstration of the holiday once on the island is conducted by Thomson.

First things first, you need a car to fully appreciate the island, it has spectacular scenery, but very little in the way of public transport, certainly where we were anyway. The car was booked online prior to arrival and collected from Figari Airport, about 30 min drive from the resort.

Staff at the resort very friendly and helpful. most if not all spoke English. Exceptionally clean, gardens well tended, and very quiet. The apartments are well equipped, TV, Microwave, Dishwasher, Air-Con, toaster etc etc. Yes, the self contained toilet and shower are small but I am nearly 6' and managed fine for 7 days. Downside, the towels aren't changed for the full week, so maybe you want to take your own, we did find out later in the week there is a launderette on site but didn't use it.

There is a small market just a short walk away, this is open from 0800-2000hrs and you can get most groceries from here. There are a couple of supermarkets within driving distance.

The beach is a 5 minute walk away and lovely, the water is crystal clear..

The restaurant is a tad expensive but the food is excellent, you can drive easily to Porto Vechio or Bonifacio easily and there are plenty of other restaurants and eateries with a wide variety of prices.

Our first trip to Corsica, very impressed, we will be going back!!

I have spent two weeks in September in Castell'Verde Residence.
Last year I was in Cala Sultana, which is closer to the beach, and this year I've decided to stay in Castell'verde, because it's a little cheaper. Bad choice!!
In fact the apartments are very small and the toilet is the smallest I've seen in my life! If you're tall or little overweight, you'd better choose something else!!
Finally, I've paid 100 euros for an apartment "cote mar", but, from the balcony, I've seen the garden like the other apartments that were cheaper. I mean that the advertising is deceptive and the difference in prices between "cote mar" and "cote jardin" is not justified (for some apartments, at least..).
So, if you want to go to Santa Giulia, Cala Sultana is really better and it worth whyle the expense.
The beach and the sea are great, but unfortunately overcrowded...ù
Anyhow, the Resort is well placed because is near Bonifacio, near other beautiful and solitary beaches, and if you like to walk, you can easily reach the Hospital forest and Bavella.

Just returned from a great holiday in Corsica where our second week was spent in an apartment at Castell Verde. Firstly, the good points. Santa Giulia Bay is beautiful and the beach is probably among the best in Europe. It could have been kept better compared to some of the beaches I have seen especially in Asia. The beach restaurant (which offers a 10% discount to residents in this hotel for evening meals) was very good - lovely location, relaxed friendly service, and good food. The resorts grounds are very well kept and service at reception was good. Our apartment was quite well equiped but rather dark especially in the kitchen area. It was quiet and a short stroll from the beach. We felt the hotel was satisfactory value for money but the restaurant was extremely expensive for what it was - dated decor, good (but not outstanding) food and at 35 euros for a fillet steak for example it should be good. Santa Giulia is a great location for exploring this stunning part of Corsica - we particularly enjoyed a trip to Bonifactio and a drive up to Bavella with a swim in a beautiful and peaceful river.
