We came here for 2 nights after getting married for our mini-moon. The hotel looks great and being an old building lots of the architecture is....old. But it is nicely decorated, has a nice bar and breakfast room.

Our room was smaller than I thought but actually very nice, clean and well presented. The bathroom was pokey and not pristine but good enough. Power shower would be nice.

The breakfasts are superb, although we did have to wait 40 minutes for eggs benedict on morning 2. Dinner was included too, and the menu was good, though it was the chefs first night.
The dinners were very well cooked and plenty of it, though I hate paying extra for vegetables!
Suggestions for food, burgers should have toppings, or pickles, or both, it was a bit dry.
mushrooms were a little dry.

Onion rings were great, as was the pork and the steak!

Staff were very good, even gave us complimentary prosecco as we were just married! It was very quiet and We enjoyed our stay immensely, we went for a good 3 hour walk into dovedale, despite the drizzle. it was nice.

Hartington is a lovely village in the Peaks and well worth a visit. The Charles Cotton hotel is ideally situated if you want to visit this area and we enjoyed whiling away a few hours drinking wine in the cosy bar after a long walk.

We stayed on a DB&B break and thought the food provided great value, but sadly, the room quality and attention to detail let this place down.

We had to hunt out staff to check us in, as nobody came when we entered reception and rang the bell. When a staff member came, they weren't overly friendly or obliging, seemed more fed up that he had to come to show us to our room. The room itself was tiny and the bathroom outdated, but it was all clean. It felt like the place needed a face lift and be brought into the 21st century.

There was a good choice at breakfast, but some of the crockery wasn't clean and had to be taken away. These are small things that just take the sheen off what I wanted to be a surprise romantic break for my other half.

I don't enjoy giving negative feedback, but hopefully this will prompt the hotel to improve its services.

We arrived late on Friday evening but no problem,we were seated in restaurant in moments and served a lovely meal. A really good start to our stay. Our 3 dogs also welcomed ( border collies). Very nice freshly cooked breakfasts. Overall a great place to stay

Spent two nights for my 40th birthday 16-18 May. The weather was glorious so we embarked on a five mile walk on the Saturday.

Loved the hotel, everyone so friendly, the meals we had there were fantastic, we highly recommend the lamb and belly pork, then can't decide on a pud - why not try a bit of them all for a tenner!!

Breakfast was a absolute treat, however people coming down in socks or bare feet was rather disconcerting, although I'm guessing they were walkers who had removed walking boots.

We had a room at the front on the building, had fizz awaiting us for my 40th!! We had problem with locking the door and the tv, but help was at hand from the friendly and efficient staff.

Bar area was cosy, never too busy and there was a live music act on the Friday night.

We will definitely return to Hartington walking, hopefully in the near future with our children where a trip to the cheese shop is a must!!

Would definitely recommend the hotel, would love to go back again.

First stay at the Charles Cotton hotel and I can highly recommend it. Perfect combination of great location, good food, lovely place to stay and very helpful staff. Bonus was the warm fire and afternoon tea! Stayed for a long week-end on a cycling trip. The staff at the hotel were really happy to accomodate us with our bikes, providing safe overnight storage. Fabulous landscape with a few challenging hills but that helped justify the afternoon tea by the fire then lovely evening meals. Would be more than happy to go back, lovely place to stay - hope we can plan another trip soon.

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Mobile phone signal very poor however we were able to use the hotel land line at no extra cost.
Meals were well presented, delicious and served by friendly staff.
Excellent location for walks whether it's a stroll or hike.
We would definitely visit again.
