I choose a single room because this was not much more than a dorm bed on arrival I was pleasantly surprised to get a dorm room to myself with my own shower and a toilet just outside the room. The building was amazing almost felt like a grand hotel.......although remember it's a hostel you do have to make your own beds! The staff were very friendly and made some recommendations for walks
I ate at the restaurant the food was ok, nothing special but a reasonable price. Breakfast great value. My only fault was that the kitchen was in a separate building which meant if I wanted to make a cup of tea without buying one I had to go outside in the rain. A games room and outdoor play area for children so great for families but at the same time even though it was half term I didn't feel surrounded by screaming kids. Highly recommended.

Myself and two friends decided to go to alton towers, kind of last minute thing and instead of driving from Scotland to Staffordshire and back in one day we decided to book a room at the YHA Hartington Hostel. The room price was £40, split 3 ways which I thought was excellent value for money. On arrival I wasn't sure if we had arrived at the correct place, as from outside it does not look like a hostel, the building was big, old and looked amazing with patio chairs and benches outside for the summer days. The man on the desk was friendly, helpful and actually knew some people from our home town.(small world!) Once we checked in and got to our room, which was basic but just like we expected, 1 bunk bed and 1 double bed with our on en suite with shower which was clean and up to standard. I haven't stayed in a hostel before but wouldn't hesitate to book up here again. We didn't eat at the hostel as we went into the nearby town of buxton and have a meal but the prices of the food on the menu looked reasonable with a good choice. We did have a few drinks which were average pub prices, and even used the internet services which were handy because most mobile phones do no receive signals in this area of the hostel which is a negative but this has nothing to do with the staff nor the hostel ofcourse.

Overall I would rate this hostel a 4/5 and I would definitely come again.

It would have been a 5/5 if the pool table was not out of order.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and hope that you are planning on visiting us again soon. Apologies for the pool table, obviously this was a one off maintenance problem which we always try to rectify as soon as possible.

Had an amazing weekend at Hartington Hall for our Son & Daughter in laws Wedding. The staff there arrange everything. All we did was arrange the flowers and entertainment. The food was excellent and plentiful and the accomodation very clean and more than adequate considering it is a youth hostel.
We highly recommend Hartington Hall

A friend booked our group of circa 20 people for Friday and Saturday night and the facilites, location andand staff were fantastic and such value for money. We actually got a rate for B & B along with evening meal, the food was very good, the bar was priced OK and you could buy a bottle ust before last orderes and there was no hurry to finish it off quickly. Excellent for familes too.

This is a lovely hostel surrounded by beautiful countryside, and is handy for exploring the Peak District. When we visited, it had snowed recently and the grounds were an ideal location for children to make friends as they snowballed each other. The climbing frame outside and the games room, with table football and pool table as well as big connect 4 and jenga, provided more opportunities for children to make new friends. Meanwhile, there are also plenty of places for adults to sit and read or talk on comfortable sofas in the library and bar areas. And whilst we're on the subject of facilities, who wouldn't want bunnies and pygmy goats to say hello to every morning?

We ate breakfast on each of the four days of our stay, and dinner on one night. Food was good quality and included vegetarian options. Breakfast was the normal YHA type of thing with a choice of cooked items, cereals, croissants, toast, grapefruit etc. and good coffee as per usual.

However the real selling point of this hostel (as with many other YHA hostels) is the staff, who are unerringly cheerful and friendly and respond patiently, and without being patronising, to children's questions and comments.

The only downside we found during our stay was that the self-catering kitchen isn't huge, and it can get very busy at peak mealtimes, which can be difficult if you have young children who are used to eating at a set time - but a bit of planning ahead can sort that out.

All in all, we had a wonderful break and will definitely be back again.

Thank you for your review. We are aware that the self catering kitchen can at times be crowded however this is only ever an issue during busy school holidays. I do hope that this will not put you off staying with us in the future? There are many offers on the YHA website that often include food in our restaurant, it may be worth taking advantage of these. Hope to see you soon.

I booked en route with the central booking line quite late and arrived at 9.30pm. Although not expected by the hostel, I was welcomed by friendly staff and booked in without hitch.

The single room I booked (for a bargain £20) was clean, warm and had an ensuite shower which was completely spotless. The toilet was just next door - absolutely no complaints there.

The lounge areas were comfortable, clean, lovely and welcoming with the wood burners throwing out a brilliant warmth. The bar was operating but unfortunately no Guinness, problem with the barrel, but the Becks was fine.

I was down for breakfast at 7.30am, the only one there and the chef asked me what I wanted (from a good selection) and it was then cooked to order - what more could anyone ask for and for £4.95??

The staff I met were professional, friendly and welcoming. The location is wonderful - the village is very picturesque, and the hostel itself is absolutely amazing - I've told all my friends they have to visit.

Thank you YHA, Hartington Hall is a gem!!

We had a family room with double bed. The hostel provided a travel cot. The room was very clean and quite big for a hostel. The lounge had a box of toys and children's books which was very handy. The food was good quality, dinner and breakfast.
We really enjoyed our one night stay and would like to return!
