“Our second stay”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

We had a fabulous stay at Hartington Hall a few years ago so we didn't hesitate to come back with our friends. I have to say that we still enjoyed our stay this time around but I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with the overall condition and facilities. The big disappointment (especially at this time of the year) was the main hall wood burner was out of action and has been since December according to a member of staff. The games room had a number of activities out of order and the boiling water tap in the self-catering kitchen was also not functioning with all of us fighting over just one domestic kettle. We had a decent room but again it looked a little shabby and in need of a refurb and being directly above the kitchen the early morning "noises" woke us up. On the whole the staff were very friendly and helpful although the lady on reception didn't seemed pleased to see us when we first checked in...a blip i'm sure because our experience of YHA staff has always been a fantastic bunch of people. My recommendation is very simply that someone needs to go through the hostel with a clipboard and note down all the defects and get them fixed ASAP...especially the wood burner!
Don't let this review dampen your desire to visit Hartington Hall. It's a beautiful old house with loads of character and in a lovely spot in the Peak District, full of lovely other hostelers and great YHA staff all there to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Very enjoyable - hope to return soon for the village atmosphere and walks. Hall itself was very comfortable for winter time. WiFi reception inconvenient but hey those stone walls will block anything. No one wanted to watch TV which states a lot! Meals were great and good-value including consideration of special dietary needs.

Room Tip: 29 is in the barn - overlooking sheep field & valley. Near to self-catering facilities

We stayed here for one night in January, as part of a party of 8 and had a wonderful time. Hartington exceeded all expectations, the bedrooms were spotless and good sizes, we certainly didn't feel on top of each other. The communal areas and restaurant were excellent and very atmospheric, especially on a cold winter's evening! We had our evening meal in the restaurant then moved to the sitting room to play board games. The staff were very helpful and accommodating, I just cannot believe the price! The building itself is beautiful, it was a treat to stay in such a place. The village is just a short walk down the hill and has a few small shops and two lovely pubs that I would highly recommend. I can't wait for our next visit, which we want to arrange soon!!

We stayed here as a couple after wanting to visit for ages! What a beautiful place! The building is stunning and we stayed in the very quaint Bonnie Prince Charlies Room. For what it cost us, I was quite blown away! The staff were very helpful and Steve on reception couldn't do enough for us. The food was very nice and the prices very reasonable. Cheap beer, which is always a plus :) I would have loved to have stayed more than one night and will be back again very soon. Well done to the lovely staff of Hartington Hall for making us feel welcome and looked after. The Hall is immaculate and I would recommend it to anybody.

Room Tip: If you like something oozing with character, ask for Bonnie Prince Charlies bedroom!

Two adults and two older teens - just returned home from a Fri/Sat night stay at Hartington Hall YHA. We'd never used a youth hostel before - cost being a deciding factor on this birthday get together - so weren't sure what to expect. However, it was superb in every respect - friendly, and very helpful staff with a great can-do attitude, excellent facilities, and, best of all, some lovely communal rooms to relax in. There were lots of young families which added to the warm atmosphere. The bedroom was very clean and the four of us had two very comfortable nights' sleep in our bunks! Breakfast and our Sat night evening meal was great value for money and tasty. By the way, this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review on Trip Advisor.

Room Tip: Can't really comment other than to say our room in the 'Barn' was very nice.

Wow. Pigs, ducks and goats on site. Great play area. The Library and its warming log burner and smart sofas and chairs....this room is more hotel than youth hostel. Kids loved it. I loved it. Good beer.

Firstly the staff were all very friendly and helpful. We arrived in the dark late on Friday night and it was chucking it down. We'd forgot to pick milk up on route so they found some for us. Family room with toilet & shower was very warm and cosy. Water pressure in the shower was low so it took a while to get washed.
We used the self catering the first night & for breakfast, well equipped even if the jobs were a bit poor.
We had food in the hostel for our second night, well cooked, tasty & good value. The hand pulled ale was a bonus.
