“Excellent food and accommodation”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

We finished our ten day uk holiday with two nights here and even ended up eating here both nights as the food was so good. We had two rooms for our family, and loved our quirky, sloping floor suite. I saw the paint chips and cobwebs, but didn't mind as all the important things were sparkling. What do you expect in such an old building? The breakfast was amazing- agree with all previous comments, fresh, to order, huge choice, piping hot etc. dinners were excellent, tasty gravy, big choice, etc. loved it all!

Hi everyone, well having read other reviews on this hotel, some very good, some not so good, I feel we should put forward our honest comments on the Manifold Inn. There is no getting away from the breathtaking scenery that surrounds this hotel. We booked the Manifold via a Groupon deal, we rang to make our booking which was not straightforward on our part as we required 3 rooms for one night and 4 rooms for the second night, also requiring a ground floor room. The management were extremely helpful and were able to accommodate our needs.
Upon our arrival there was a little confusion but no problem at all and we were soon settling in to our accommodation. The rooms offered all we could need (apart from internet which was not available for about a 2 mile radius but which was available free of charge in the hotel area).
We were asked if we would like to book a table for the evening but as we were booked to eat there the following evening we decided to check out the other hostelries in the area. We ate at a hotel in the centre of the village which was full of charm and character but the food left a little to be desired, and we wished that we had stayed put and eaten at the Manifold.
Our party of 6 (soon to be 8) sat in the conservatory for breakfast which was excellent, individually cooked to our liking, (not self service like most other hotels that we have stayed in)
As our group ranged from ages 20's to 80's the breakfast order was not straightforward, we had full english including black pudding! and every egg imaginable, boiled fried poached scrambled etc. Breakfast was served on piping hot plates and very well presented with fresh tomatoes, mushrooms etc and the usual cereal fruit juice toast jams and good quality tea and individual cafetiere coffee.
A great day out was had by all visiting Buxton and Bakewell both towns which are well worth a visit and easily accessible from the hotel. We returned in time for our evening meal which was booked for 7.00pm. 2 of our party, the twins who were 25 that day had not arrived so we were unable to take up our reservation on time, the staff had set a table for 8 people and decorated it for us for the birthday celebrations 25, 25, and 82. They were extremely busy and i think fully booked. The rest of our party eventually got to the hotel at 9.00pm. The staff were very understanding and brought us a delicious selection of olives, salad leaves, olive bread, hummus, oil/vinegar dips etc to keep us going. The food was excellent well prepared and presented. They could not do enough to make our stay most enjoyable, including preparing and serving a large birthday cake that we had provided ourselves, and all the female staff singing Happy Birthday. yes the place needs the attention of a handyman just to attend to those little jobs here and there but i am sure they will get round to in sooner rather than later, but don't let that put you off, give them a try, you won't be disappointed if you think about what you have paid, then comment accordingly. We will be back. Thanks to all

We booked a one night stay at the Manifold Inn through the Groupon deal and really enjoyed it. The place is set in acres of beautiful countryside and is only two minutes walk from the start of the Manifold Trail or a few minutes drive to the Tissington Trail, both ideal for walking and cycling. The room was as we expected, traditional rather than modern. The bed was comfortable and the shower was good. We had a 3-course meal in the restaurant as part of the deal and the food was excellent. There is a special Groupon menu, but it offers lots of choice with a few of the more expensive dishes available for a supplement. The breakfast was self service for fruit and cereals, with a full english breakfast freshly cooked and brought to the table. The staff on reception and in the bar and restaurants were friendly and helpful throughout, and we couldn't really fault anything. We hope to visit the Peak District again, and will certainly look to pay the Manifold another visit.

As I bravely begin this review I fully expect the negative response from the Manager. So, the whole reason we were staying in the area was for the beautiful countryside and breathtaking scenery , and whilst we completely appreciated the fine ales,wine,200 year old building etc , I feel our downfall was that we were not eating ( having just returned from a 9 mile hike where we had stopped at The Royal Oak for a lovely meal and drinks )We stopped at The Manifold Inn for a couple of drinks, to meet up with our other friends , and with a view to returning in the evening ( which would have been 14 of us , mixed group,no trouble and lots of cash behind the bar!)
The 2 girls serving drinks behind the bar were perfectly pleasant , I believe it was when it became apparent that we were not there to eat and had indeed , not booked a table, that the attitude changed.
Now fair enough whilst the weather was fine we were happy to sit outside , but when the heavens opened we came into the bar to try and find a table for a short while. This is when we found out that even if not eating , you should reserve a table , and since all were already reserved they expected us to stand in the doorway/corridor and made it very obvious that we were in the way.
This is despite the fact that the side room , conservatory and many of the tables in the small bar area were empty ( but reserved for later )This immediately lost the custom of all bar 4 of our group, and my own response was actually just to go and finish my drink in the rain outside rather than stay where we were being made to feel unwelcome.
Even then the young chap was out into the garden every couple of minutes to see if we'd finished our drinks and whip the glasses away in what I can only describe as a hostile manner.
I have worked in customer service for over 20 years and run my own business and I just cannot understand the thinking of the management.Perhaps they already make enough money that they can pick and choose which customers will be treated with indifference.
They not only lost our business for that evening but also what was potentially going to be a future booking of a meal for 14.
Totally agree with Winnie that the Royal Oak is a lovely friendly pub , and they shall be getting our custom when we return.

We only respond negatively if we feel that a review is unfair - surely any business would do the same?
The Manifold is a victim of its own success. At this time of year customers are advised to book to avoid disappointment. However, when the restaurant and conservatory areas are fully booked for diners, there is still a huge bar to stand at so I am unsure why you chose to stand in the rain. There are also plenty smaller tables dotted around for drinkers. I also think its perhaps a little unfair that you have awarded only 2 stars when you haven't even seen any rooms or even tried the food?!
I too have worked in customer service and own several companies all of which are professionally run, courteous and successful with client and customer satisfaction of paramount importance.
Best of luck with the Royal Oak

I stayed in the campsite opposite recently, stunning part of the country. We decided to book a table as it looked like a nice little pub. There was an error which led to a meal not arriving, absolutely forgivable. What is of concern though, is that the waitress was confused by the fact, that five meals for six people obviously doesn't fit. To be told its on its way, but them needing to take my order again, then confused me. A friend spoke to the manager about it, who couldn't see a problem with this. However in the end, we felt we should let it go, as we felt sorry for her running back and forth to the kitchen to get the land lady's views on the matter. We did ask to speak with the landlady but she was too busy to see us. Ales, wines, location and 200 year old building all perfect, as was the food when I received it, just disappointed by the way it was handled.

Just returned today from this quaint 200 year old coaching inn having stayed on a groupon deal for three nights with dinner on the first night and breakfast each day. What a fantastic bargain. The food was superb and cannot be faulted. The staff were very friendly and the scenery is to die for. Some might say the rooms are a little dated but what can you expect from a 200 year old inn !
The pub was very busy each night with both locals and visitors alike.Would return.

Room Tip: 6 is over the kitchen - quiet by 11pm no noise until after 08 am stayed in this one for 2 nights...

Just returned from a lovely 2 night stay at the Manifold Inn wonderful location, food and staff. Surprised at the comment regarding the Landlady/Manager as our meeting with her was totally different she couldn't do enough for us. The restaurant was extremely busy both nights but when eating the food you can see why.

Would like to return to this area and would not hesitate to stay at The Manifold Inn.
