Most pub rooms get away with providing just about what you expect. This one goes much further and is a perfect base for an island stay. Our room was the smallest but it was cute -- good bed, decent quality furnishings, loads of extras like biscuits, flowers and toiletries. Window overlooked horses in the fields. Its certainly not a "gastro" pub and the carvery and function room area could do with a makeover and better furniture. But the main bar parts are cosy and more atmospheric and served a great cooked breakfast. There's even smoked salmon and scrambled egg if you want it. The evening food menu had lots of well- judged choices -- so much so we returned for a second night instead of eating out. There is clearly a chef here who knows what he or she is doing, We really enjoyed the mullet on crushed new potatoes with a creamy leek sauce, the fish and chips and a double pork steak with (I think) cranberry and melted Stilton. Lovely dish of interesting just-cooked- right vegetables on the side and perfect large crisp golden chips in a bowl -- not the flabby sort you often get. The staff often asked if everything was ok and were good for a chat without ever imposing. They even offered to shut the door on a glam rock wedding band playing in the function room. We didnt mind -- it was quite fun and didn't disturb us. Though why anyone would want to start their married life listening to cover versions of Gary Glitter's back catalogue beats me.
