“Great room quality and thoughtful service -- good choice”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Most pub rooms get away with providing just about what you expect. This one goes much further and is a perfect base for an island stay. Our room was the smallest but it was cute -- good bed, decent quality furnishings, loads of extras like biscuits, flowers and toiletries. Window overlooked horses in the fields. Its certainly not a "gastro" pub and the carvery and function room area could do with a makeover and better furniture. But the main bar parts are cosy and more atmospheric and served a great cooked breakfast. There's even smoked salmon and scrambled egg if you want it. The evening food menu had lots of well- judged choices -- so much so we returned for a second night instead of eating out. There is clearly a chef here who knows what he or she is doing, We really enjoyed the mullet on crushed new potatoes with a creamy leek sauce, the fish and chips and a double pork steak with (I think) cranberry and melted Stilton. Lovely dish of interesting just-cooked- right vegetables on the side and perfect large crisp golden chips in a bowl -- not the flabby sort you often get. The staff often asked if everything was ok and were good for a chat without ever imposing. They even offered to shut the door on a glam rock wedding band playing in the function room. We didnt mind -- it was quite fun and didn't disturb us. Though why anyone would want to start their married life listening to cover versions of Gary Glitter's back catalogue beats me.

Visited the Chequers late on a quiet Saturday afternoon with two friends. Myself and one other ordered the tagliatelle in creamy mushroom sauce, the other ordered the Hunters Chicken. The tagliatelle was absolutely disgusting, swimming in the revolting sauce, it makes my stomach turn just thinking about it. The Hunters chicken was very expensive for such a small portion and was extremely dry. Hygiene also seems to be an issue, as the 'waitress' who served us took the tray of sauces directly from a table of at least 7 people, plus their children and dumped them on our table without acknowledging us, or even bothering to change the used spoons. Very disappointed and will not be going back.

6 of us went for an afternoon roast, one of us wanted the nut roast. I'm not an expert, but how long does it take to cook a nut roast? Definitely not over 30 minutes. Oh yeah, and don't worry about apologising to us, just keep blaming each other and the till system. Won't be coming again soon...if at all.

Here primarily to eat as footborne customers. Comparatively remote location but possible by bus and 18 minutes walk. Found the real ale range rather limited - these days I have come to expect at least one local brewery beer. Excellent selection of menus. My partner's trout was right in every way. My Supersized mixed grill beat me to pulp so even with time on our hands I had to leave some. Excellent food but would need better beer range, especially including Island brews, to get me to return.

Spent 2 nights here in October 2013. We paid 90 Pounds per night and were very impressed by the quality of the accommodation. Room was well decorated, clean and well equipped. Bathroom was also excellent. Breakfast buffet was good and staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay there again on a future visit.

Beautiful room, lots of added extras! Excellent service! Lovely bed! Everyone made us feel welcome. Only problem was our shower didn't work which was a shame because it looked very inviting! But the shower head on the bath was extremely powerful and made up for it. We can't wait to go back!

We booked 4 days in the IOW staying 3 nights at the Chequers Inn. We stayed in their smallest room the 'Rill' which is cosy but if you just need somewhere as a base to have an excellent breakfast and a good sleep it's perfect.
The owners make every effort to make you feel special and comfortable. The room is very well presented and cleaned every day. Excellent towels and facilities. Extra touches like coffee, tea, fruit, water, biscuits all available in the room.
Breakfast is as big as you want it to be. Make sure you come down around 8.45 or later and you have access to the English Breakfast carvery a superb way to start the day.
The Isle Of Wight has all the qualities of England 20 years ago. Clean, polite and relaxed. We will be returning !!
