“Not my cuppa tea...”
Reviewed 16 October 2011

Stayed at this bed and breakfast for one night over the weekend. Firstly the good points - The room was super clean and although not decorated to my taste it was very cosy. The bed was excellent - very comfortable, and the bathroom was fine. I can’t complain about the room at all. The location was convenient for Oban. The breakfast was pretty good, there was an extensive choice, and included some nice touches such as home made bread, lovely yoghurt and eggs from their own chickens.

The bad points.

The two complementary bottles of water in the fridge had broken seals, and had been refilled. I found this pretty disgusting. They were plastic bottles and the labelling was intact so the bottles had not been sterilised.

I’m very aware that the owner will read this and don't particularly want to hurt her feelings. However, I found her really quite rude and overbearing. I don’t appreciate it when someone asks me a question, then talks over the top of my answer. It is also very rude to ask people questions (and not listen to their answers) in order to lead the conversation back to you/your family/your holiday etc, so you can show off. Also, Please don’t ask what hotel I am staying in (at a future holiday), then check trip advisor and smugly tell me that the hotel that I’m going to stay in is of a poorer quality than the one that you are going to stay in... It’s not nice to be insulted by someone you are paying for a service (especially when they are wrong…). Also I found it inappropriate to tell a guest how much commission late rooms take, and to tell me that the money you make from the B&B just covers the mortgage and no more...

Anyway, I'm exhausted just thinking about this experience. The accommodation was fine, the hospitality was not. I'd go elsewhere.

I was very disppointed to read your review of our Bed and Breakfast, it was very hurtful and personal.

1..The water in the bedroom fridges are daily checken and renewed if required, we buy them from the Cash & Carry. The people from the night before must have burst the seals. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, all seals will be checked from now on. There is no way we have filled the bottles up, we both have been on Hygeine courses, recently and this would never happen.
2. All companies sending you B&B`s take a commission. That`s life, that`s how they make their money.
3. You mentioned about the hotel in Egypt, your hotel actually has greater reviews than ours, yours is a specialist hotel, dealing with younger people(than us) with lots to do sport wise, we just want a beach, lazy holiday.
4. I thought we were having a nice chat, in the lounge having afternoon tea/coffee, cakes, biscuits, enjoying the log fire..
5. I have NEVER been rude to anybody in our house, this is totally wrong.
6. You forgot to mention about the fire alarms going off in the morning, my husband Gary had to knock at your bedroom door. to see if you both were ok. The steam from your Shower had set them off, as the electric fan/main light was not switched on by yourselves in the bathroom, It`s nomal practice to come out and see where the fire alarm is coming from.
7. I find it very hard to accept if anything wasn`t to your liking, that people would not tell you about it at the time, and the matter could and would have been corrected.
8. I hope people reading this review takes the time to read other reviews, where our hosting skills are praised, the decorating is kept neutral to suit everybody tastes.
We try and make the bed & breakfast as homely and comfortable as we would like it to be, sorry if you didn`t like it, Sarah Knowles,An-Struan,Benderloch, near Oban b

We were met by Sarah with a happy smile and a welcoming cuppa or wine (we went for the wine). Made us feel very at home quickly, like visiting friends rather than a B&B. Room was very clean and warm with a bottle of chilled water in the mini fridge.
We only went there as a stopover on our way to Mull, but it was well worth the stop in itself. It wasnt just conversation to do the landlady job, we felt welcome and shared stories. We will be back on our way through again.

We used An-Struan for a two night stop-over on the way to Mull, but it would be an ideal centre for exploring this area of Argyll. A lovely welcome from Sarah and Gary made us feel at home.
The accommodation was very comfortable and the breakfasts excellent. (Great home-made bread.)

We stayed here for just one night on our way to Mull by ferry and were made very welcome by the hosts who greeted us with tea, cake and kindness - very welcome after our long drive. The room was very quiet and comfortable, spotlessly clean, richly decorated with excellent bathroom facilities. The hosts booked us a table at the only restaurant nearby - a short 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk along the shore and we had a good reasonably priced meal plus a few glasses of wine. We slept beautifully. The breakfast was great - Loch Fyne kippers for us - and all the other guests' breakfasts looked very good too. An Struan was almost fully booked for the whole of July and August and we were lucky to get one night at short notice and we could see why it was popular. The best things were the welcome, the breakfast, the quiet room, the comfortable bed . . . we could go one. Nothing bad to say although we could perhaps have done with a few less ornaments and decorative objects in our room. A minor quibble - others may love the richness of decor. We thoroughly recommend and will book again if we need to stay near Oban.
Heather Leach and Roger Jackson. Manchester

This B and B is close to Oban and therefore ideal for people using the ferries.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the house. Very quiet but there was little traffic anyway.

Thank you for your glowing report. It ws a pleasure having you both stay here. I think you are getting mixed up with the bedroom ornaments, as we don`t have any in the bedrooms, just the Dining room, Guest Sitting room. We try and keep things pretty neutral as to suit everybody tastes. Glad you enjoyed your Kippers, regards Sarah Knowles,Anstruan,Benderloch.

We got lucky and booked a late room offer for An-Struan just the day before our arrival. Our stay was for two nights and we were set for the studio room, which offers plenty of space while being really nicely and tastefully furnished. The bathroom alone was as large as other rooms we spent some nights in in Scotland.
The welcome was warm and friendly and Sarah, the host, was happy to offer plenty of advice on what to do and what to see while staying in the area.
The highlight of a stay at An-Struan is clearly the most wonderful breakfast we had during our stay in Scotland. Free range eggs from their own chickens, homemade yoghurt, homemade jelly, homebaked bread and perfectly cooked breakfast options of Scottish or English flavors. You can't do wrong with staying at An-Struan.

Room Tip: If you plan on staying multiple nights, the studio is a great choice
